SAAB TURBO RACES TOWARD ROAD ATLANTA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

ORANGE, CONNECTICUT — The Saab Turbo will be a strong contender in the upcoming national sports car racing championships, the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic, at the Road Atlanta track in Flowery Beach, George, October 23-25. Swedish-built Saabs will be racing in four different classes at the Sports Car Club of American run-offs, seeking the crowns in the GTI II (Sedan) and F-Production (Sports Car) classes, as well as repeat championships in the Showroom Stock A and B classes. The Saab Turbo is a contender in the A Class, racing against such makes as Porsche 924, Mazda RX7, and a Datsun 280 Z; while the Saab 99, already two-time national championship car, is in the Showroom Stock B Class. Photo shows a Saab Turbo piloted by national SCCA champion Don Knowles — who will be driving in both the SSA and SSB run-off races — on its way to the overall victory in the “Longest Day” 24-hour endurance race at Nelson’s Ledges, Ohio. With Knowles in the night-driving equipped Turbo is Cleveland TV personality Fred Griffith.
