SAAB OFFERS REDESIGNED, LIGHTWEIGHT ENGINE FOR 1981

The Saab two-1iter overhead camshaft engine has been in production since 1972, with more than half a million units produced so far. It has been even further developed for 1981 to meet both current and future demands on emissions contro1 and fuel economy. The 1981 Saab engine — above in its turbocharged 135 bhp version -· is about 25 pounds 1ighter than its predecessor, which has helped reduce the overa11 weight of the 1981 Saab cars by between 45 and 90 pounds.

The 1981 engine, designated the H-engine, has been simp1ified on a number of vita1 points. For examp1e, the auxi1iary shaft (id1er shaft) has been e1 iminated. The distributor is now mounted direct1y on a new cast a1uminum camshaft cover and is driven by the camshaft, whi1e the water pump is driven by the a1ternator belt. For 1981 the Saab Turbo engine a1so incorporates a new sma11er turbine, which gives better throttle response, especia11y at 1ow speeds; and an integrated wastegate (charging pressure contro1 va1ve), which is ccntro11ed by the pressure in the intake manifo1d instead of by the pressure in the exhaust manifo1das in the past.
