An unrestored, three-time SAAB Owner’s Convention Concours entrant and multiple event class winning 1966 SAAB Monte Carlo 850 headed Sunday for Sterling Heights, MI and the GM Heritage Collection fleet.
Vintage SAAB parts vendor Chip Lamb (West of Sweden SAAB, http://www.wmsbrg.com/) has been the car’s owner for over five years after acquiring it through a third party from the original owner in 2001.

Richard Balsley, Manager of GM’s Heritage Collection matched an offer on the car January 23rd from a private individual after months of subtle hints from Chip about the car’s availability for the collection. Unlike GM’s other 2-stroke and V4 powered cars, the little Monte Carlo has never been restored, but it may be soon to bring it up to at least as-new condition by the twin shops who maintain and restore GM’s extensive collection of SAAB automobiles from 1950 to the present day.

My first car was a 1966 Saab 96. I loved it, and often wished that it was a Monte Carlo 850, but the regular 3 carb. engine was still pretty good. It blew my friends’ VW Beetles out of the water. From its shielded floor pan, to its free wheeling, to its pop out windshield, this car was great.

An outstanding model of Eric´s Monte Carlo winner at 1/18 scale is produced by NEO. Thank God they make excellent choices at reasonable prices (compared to BBR by instance). If You can´t get a real one…
