1977 – The Introduction of the Turbocharger

In 1977, the turbocharger was introduced into the SAAB 99 due to the hard work of Per Gillbrand of Saab-Scania, who is known today as “the father of turbocharging”. The turbocharger or turbo for short is another iconic technology element that makes a Saab, a Saab and is used in all Saab models today, except for the 9-7x.

The concept behind the turbocharger is that the system is exhaust driven and is comprised of two parts, the turbine unit and the compressor. The system works with the exhaust gas that comes into the chamber and spins the turbine. The turbine is connected via a shaft to a compressor wheel that is also spun. The compressor wheel also sucks air from the outside in and delivers the air under pressure into the intake manifold of the engine. This process increases the amount of air and fuel into the engine, therefore increasing power and performance. The dynamic increase of delivery of exhaust gases are directly related to the immediate response in the turbocharger that is driven by these exhaust gases.
