SAAB-Cape Cod – New England Telephone Ad – 1957

Posted on 18. Apr, 2007 by in 1950-1959, 2000-2009, Dealerships, New England

As a follow-up to the story that I have covered earlier on the SAAB dealership that Kurt Vonnegut was a Sales Manager at, I have recently received some information from the folks at the W.B. Nickerson library at the Cape Cod Community College. This image is a scan of the SAAB-Cape Cod dealership from the 1957 New England Telephone directory. This advertisement effectively confirms that 1957 is the year that the SAAB-Cape Cod was believed to have started by the recent comments of Saab historian and former editor of the Saab Club Magazine, Nines, Tim Winker.

I did some advertising work for the yellow pages a while back. They maintain reverse directories. I’m not sure how far back the go.

But, if you can give them the phone number they might be able to confirm the address of the dealership.

I’ve been told that the Sturgis Library might have images of the dealership. Vonnegut was a trustee of the library.

Otherwise, Vonnegut has a daughter who still lives in Barnstable .She might have a picture of the dealership.

I’m told that the West Barnstable Fire House still stands. If you can’t find a vintage image, I’ll drive by this weekend and get you a picture.

    Bugsy,

I just called the Sturgis Library, so I forward to any information that they can find, specifically some vintage photograph from 1957-1961 of the SAAB dealership utilizing that old firestation on Route 6A.

They will be checking their immediate resources, but suggested that you come visit in-person to go through their non-indexed microfiche of the local newspaper that has got to have photographs of the dealership. This local newspaper that you are probably aware of is called the “Barnstable Patriot”. This newspaper actually suggests people visit the Sturgis library due to their extensive archive of material so here we are. Let me know if this is something you can do.

    Thanks! We’re almost there!

I copied you on an email to David Still, the editor of the Barnstable Patriot. He hasn’t responded. I’ll do the research, if David doesn’t have this info at his finger tips.

Also, another reader posted this comment:

My understanding was the dealership was in the Stone Building on Route 6A where it turns at Parker Road/Church Street.

I live just a few miles from this area. I have to drive by and ask around a little. I’ll let you know next week.

  4. We haven’t found any additional info for you, but you probably know that in his book “A Man Without a Country” they reprinted a self-portrait he drew on Saab letterhead. See the following link for an image: http://www.sevenstories.com/html/custom/images/Saab.jpg

Thank you for your hard work and research on this. We do have this self-portrait posted previously.
