I recently picked up a wonderful informational booklet while attending Kjell ac Bergström’s seminar on BioPower, the chief of the Saab BioPower program at the 60th Anniversary Saab Festival in Sweden. I am compelled to share that material with you here on the site as another good pitch for Saab Automobile’s progressive E85/E100 Ethanol campaign. Saab BioPower. Enjoy.

Saab BioPower is a flexfuel solution – if bioethanol is not available, you can simply full up with gasoline, or any mix of the two.

A Saab BioPower model is a rolling statement for a more sustainable future. Governments also have an awakening interest in supporting environmentally friendlier vehicles. Within Europe, Sweden is playing a leading role with incentives such as reduced car taxation. Many cities in Sweden also offer free parking and exemption from congestion charges for these vehicles. Now, several countries are following this example.
A Saab BioPower car is as easy to drive and own as a gasoline or diesel car. At the filling station you just choose the E85 pump. The E85 fuel is a mixture of 85 percent bioethanol and 15 percent of gasoline. Saab BioPower technology is affordable and well proven. Bioethanol is a renewal energy source. It can help us reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions and save oil resources. Bioethanol can be produced from a wide variety of biomass sources such as forest residue, sugar cane and sugar beet. When used as a fuel in vehicles, bioethanol is usually mixed with 15 percent gasoline to improve cold-start ability. The potent result is a high-octange fuel known as E85. Driving a car with E85 instead of regular gasoline can reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissionas by as much as 85 percent.
Bioethanol has many more advantages. It is distributed in the same way as gasoline, so it doesn’t require big investments in infrastructure. The fuelling network can be expanded rapidly. Bioethanol can be produced locally and make us less dependant on oil.

Saab 9-3 BioPower

The Saab 9-3 Convertible, Sport Sedan and SportCombi – three quite different cars with a common spirit. Whichever is your favorite, you can enjoy it with the new inspiring 1.8t BioPower engine. Fuel it with bioethanol (E85) and maximum power output rises from 150 to 175bhp. Torque is increased from 240 to 265 Nm. So while you do nature a favour, count on even faster response for more fun and quicker overtaking.

Or if you want even more performance, choose the Saab 9-5 2.3t BioPower. Fill it up with bioethanol (E85) and output grows from 185 to 210bhp. So do nature a favor and you’ll enjoy faster acceleration, better respone and even more driving excitement.

The Saab BioPower concept is designed around our innovative turbo technology and Saab Trionic engine management.     The picture shown above is a 9-3 sportcombi. GM has it labeled as a 9-5 on its media site. None of the pictures show a 9-5 even though every article and caption attached say based from its Saab 95 parts – . We’ll look into it to see if it is either going to be a 9-3 or a 9-5 that they haven’t shown a picture of.
