Saab and Documenta to the world’s most famous chef
The Swedish automotive brand Saab, main sponsor of the documenta 12, is supporting artistic director Roger M. Buergel in an unusual project. Buergel selects visitors to the documenta and invites them on a culinary journey to the renowned “elBulli” restaurant on the Costa Brava. Saab provides the exclusive shuttle service.
“elBulli”, near Roses on Spain’s Costa Brava, is one of the most famous restaurants in the world and has long been a place of pilgrimage for gourmets. What guests are served by celebrity chef Ferran Adrià is much more than conventional cooking. The weekly magazine “Die Zeit” calls Adrià the inventor of the “molecular cooking method”. For six months every year, he experiments with his team of scientists, artists and food technologists, developing sophisticated, avant-garde recipes. The other half of the year he treats 50 guests per evening to his innovative creations.
During the documenta 12, randomly chosen visitors have the exceptional opportunity to enjoy this extraordinary experience for an evening. As the main sponsor of documenta 12, Saab makes sure that the guests are pampered right from the beginning and chauffeurs them in Saab cars to the airport. The culinary journey always begins in the Saab Art Lounge in Kassel’s Kulturbahnhof.
One of the first winners was documenta visitor Iris Heußner from Kassel, herself a restaurant owner. “For a gastronome, this is like winning the lottery,” raved Heußner. “What Ferran Adrià does with food and the way he presents his creations is unique and a work of art in 41 courses.”
During this five-hour experience that stimulates all the senses, 40 cooks and around the same number of staff cater to the guests. Iris Heußner found guests’ reactions to unexpected and unusual dishes particularly interesting: dishes normally expected to be hot are ice-cold, meat is served in liquid form, food tastes completely different than one expects. Ferran Adrià knows that not everyone understands his kind of cooking. “Only those who experience it can understand it.” But anyone who has the fortune to enjoy his creations knows that the Catalan’s cooking art is a feast for the senses.
The documenta 12 runs until September 23, and Saab will accompany the visitors selected by Roger M. Buergel on the first part of their journey until then. The Saab Art Lounge is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. through July 31 and presents the prize-winning Saab Aero X concept car as well as the Swedish premium brand’s design world.
