As a follow-up to my recent writeup on Saab Automobile Ski Promotions last week, I thought it would be appropriate to show how just on the ball Saab-Scania of America, Inc.was in the early eighties by promoting the right vehicle at the right place at the right time, with even a celebrity endorsement to boot.

The photo depicted above features none other than a younger George Hamilton outfitted in an Aspen Ski Patrol ski outfit, alongside some other Saab USA and Aspen Ski Resort representatives.

If we look at other opportunity possibilities of celebrity endorsements, we even have had Comedians, Jay Leno promoting his old SAAB 93b, Jerry Seinfeld with his plethora of Saab 900s, two out of the three tenors, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo as well as Richard Branson.

I wonder what Saab’s future plans are for celebrity endorsements?

It’s always humorous looking at photos from the 80’s. And I believe that’s Sonny Bono in the middle. It looks like the photo was taken during a celebrity downhill race… though I can’t be sure. This photo was taken at Buttermilk Mountain long before the X-Games and you can see Aspen Highlands in the distance. The coats appear to be real jackets from the Aspen Police Department… circa 1980-something; long before I worked with the department. I’m not sure why celebrities are wearing them!? And the Aspen Police Department doesn’t have ski uniforms… I don’t believe they ever have. The ski areas are outside the city limits and therefore outside the APD jurisdiction. Any need for law enforcement would be provided by the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and any other service, such as ski patrol or ambassadors would be provided by the Aspen Skiing Company. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

    Stephanie,

Thank you! By the way, Bill Linn, presumably from your office as well as the Aspen Police has just identified some former colleagues from the 1979 photo here:

I thought you’d find that interesting, thanks again!
