I have just received a rather surprising response today from the folks at Obriens Agency, the contractor who manages the Saab Aero Academy.

It appears at first glance, they are unaware of the ending of the program. If this is truly the case, I am surprised by this lack of communication between Saab USA & the Saab Aero Academy. If this is not the case, why do they believe that the program is continuing even though the recent announcement indicates that it is not continuing?

What’s going on here exactly? This is definitely getting confusing.

The Saab Aero Academy Program : 1999 – 2008

The Saab Aero Academy began in 1999 as the “Viggen Flight Academy” which ran until 2002.

In 2002 upon the end of the last Saab 9-3 Viggen, the program was converted into what is now called the Saab Aero Academy initially only available for owners of Saab 9-5 Aero models and ran until 2005 for those owners.

In 2005, Saab Automobile USA indicated that the Saab Aero Academy became standard for all Aero model Saabs including 9-3 models.

When I first started Saab History in 2006, I covered this program in detail including a nice film that showcased what took place, how and where. Saab Aero Academy back in 2006

On October 23rd, 2007, the Saab Aero Academy became open to all Saab Owners.

This year was the culiminating and final event, the Saab Turbo-X Academy, a specific event for owners of the limited edition 2008 Saab 9-3 Turbo-X Sport Sedan’s and SportCombi models.

On June 30th, 2008 General Motors have officially and permanently ended the 9-Year run of the Saab Aero Academy program which started with the Viggen and ended with the Turbo-X.

Here is the official note to dealers from Saab Automobile USA announcing this below:

Effective July 1, 2008 Saab will discontinue offering purchasers of 2008 and subsequent model year Saabs participation in the Saab Aero Academy in Braselton, GA. Customers who purchased prior to July 1, 2008 will receive information regarding the Aero Academy in the mail and will have the option to participate by paying the $495 enrollment fee. These customers will have 1 year to enroll and participate in the Academy providing that space is available. Customers that purchase after June 30, 2008 will not receive any of the Aero Academy materials and all reference to the Aero Academy will be removed from Saabusa.com after close of business on Monday, June 30th.

Actions needed by every Saab dealer:

o Please make sure every person involved with the sales process of new Saab’s (Sales Consultants, Managers, F&I, etc) are aware of this announcement.
o Immediately remove all Aero Academy literature and point of sale materials from dealership (brochures, DVD, etc).

I have recently found a very nice article written by the wife of a former Saab owner by the name of Eric who previously owned a beautiful blue Sonett II back in 1969. This article involves her account of how he has recently recaptured his youth just after attending the 2005 Saab Owners Convention that took place in Stratton, Vermont.

Apparently, seeing the beautiful Sonetts at the SOC made Eric become all nostalgic and just had to acquire a Sonett II once again. Eric spent nearly a year after the event looking for a Sonett II and finally found one, and even went as far as to restore it back as close to the original condition as it was when new.

I think it came out quite nice in the photo above, don’t you think? I also wonder if his wife Barbara knows about the blog started by the wife of another Saab enthusiast?

Here are some of my favorite quotes below from the article that I encourage you to read for yourself in its entirety.

After Eric and I sold our Saab Sonett sports car in the late seventies, Eric tried to compensate for its loss—he took up flying. By the time we moved from Chicago to Boston in the summer of 1979, he had both an MBA and a pilot’s license.

One summer, Mason invited Eric up to his house in Vermont for a weekend. Little did I realize that the main event of Eric’s visit would be the 2005 Saab Owners Convention, at Stratton Mountain, featuring vintage Saabs of every description. Among the more behemoth models on display were a few restored Sonetts. On seeing them, Eric immediately regressed to his adolescent state. He wanted one of his own. He even phoned me from Stratton Mountain, claiming he’d purchased a Sonett on the spot. I wasn’t amused until I realized he was only joking. I worried that if Eric ever really bought an old Sonett, he would be disappointed, since I believed the actual car could never live up to his mythical memories of it.

I didn’t hide my concern from Eric, so he reacted the way any rational man would—he began searching in secret for a 1969 Sonett to restore. His quest continued, without my noticing, for over a year, mostly on the Internet. Since so few Sonetts were built to begin with, there were very few on the market and most of those were in bad repair. Finally, though, Eric thought he’d found the car he wanted. He decided it was time to reveal his intentions to me.

I reacted the way any rational woman would—with dismay. “You can’t recapture the past,” I admonished. Eric insisted he simply loved the Sonett and relished the idea of restoring one.

Motor Trend: Saab USA President On Future Of Saab

Steve Shannon, Saab Automobile USA’s president has recently discussed the future of Saab and Motor Trend was all over it with their coverage.

There were some interesting notables in this coverage, but one interesting mention came from when Steve Shannon said that Saab USA could return to Pikes Peak or another Talladega Speedway run.

If Saab were do to this, would it be around the same time that they introduce their BioPower models to the North American market in late 2009? Fuel is quite expensive these days so I am curious to find out if these “ideas”, if given the green light could involve a heavily subsidized E-85 fuel so that such ventures would be more economically possible for Saab Automobile USA. This is of course if they even plan on incorporating such activities as part of their launch program when they introduce BioPower to North America.

I indicate that Saab Automobile USA missed their 20th anniversary of Talladega two years ago as they had the Talladega Challenge in 1996 and the Talladega Long Run in 1986. Saab Automobile have also not participated in Pikes Peak with legendary Saab rally driver, Per Eklund since 2002.

I leave you with the quote from Steve Shannon on the Pikes Peak and Talladega mention that I think we’d really like much more detailed information on:

A bit of motorsport for the Saab enthusiast. Motorsport has always been infused in Saab’s DNA since its inception after WWII, but you most likely won’t see its triumphant return to the rally arena anytime soon. As much as Saab officials (and we) would like the automaker to compete, it’s currently an endeavor deemed too expensive for the relatively small automaker to undertake. If anything, “Shannon mentioned that the extent of Saab’s motorsport involvement could possibly include another Pikes Peak race or Talladega Speedway run“, not World Rally Championship.

Saab Owners Center Now Importing Customer Data

As a follow-up to my report that Saab USA & GM now host the Saab Owners Center on a Yahoo powered site, leaving customers in the dust when it comes to their data, there have now been the following responses arriving in customer’s mailboxes as a result:

I hope this importation of data is customer wide and not on an individual by individual basis.

Here’s the e-mail below, and note all of of the bounces it had to go through to finally arrive with the customer.

Saab Owners Convention – Outstanding Items

I am reposting the Saab Owners Convention listing of outstanding items still needed in order to complete the archive.

As you can see below, there are many remaining outstanding materials whether they are photographs, videos, group photos or even logos that need to be included into the Saab Owners Convention archive so that it is complete.

With the 2008 Saab Owners Convention just around the corner in Devens, Massachusetts in August of 2008, I am once again emphasizing the need to put together a comprehensive list of all of the Saab Owners Conventions from 1983 until present for us to see. This list would not be possible without the help of Saab Enthusiasts, Tom Donney, Tim Winker,Tom Nelson & Bruce Harbison of the Rocky Mountain Saab Club, Mike ‘SaabDude’ Szostkiewicz and Jon Hochstetter, Dan Morley, Bill Jacobsen and others.

You will notice that this list is a work-in-progress at this point. If you can provide any of the missing information below, please contact me directly and we will coordinate.

Saab Owners Convention – 1991

The 1991 Saab Owners Convention took place at Crystal Mountain, WA from Aug 2nd-4th.

Here is the only writeup Saab History could locate that describes this first Saab Owners Convention in the Northwest region of the United States.

Taking advantage of the many attractions at Crystal Mountain Resort and Mt. Rainier National Park, the convention was a three day extravaganza.
