Sten Wennlo, the former CEO of the Saab Car Division of Saab-Scania Sweden during the 1970’s who was instrumental in the development of the Saab turbo engine, will be speaking at the 2008 Saab Owners Convention in Devens, Massachusetts on Friday, August 22nd at 8pm.

Mr. Wennlo’s most recognizable accomplishment included the work he did with the father of the Saab turbocharger, Per Gillbrand by ensuring that the turbocharger makes it into a production vehicle.

The first vehicle that included this technology was a 1978 SAAB 99 Turbo.

It was this involvement with the Saab Car Division within Saab-Scania AB, that Mr. Wennlo also worked with SCANIA truck division, who have been using turbochargers for years, to adopt the idea of applying a turbocharger to a passenger vehicle.

Accprdog to Saab Automobile, the final decision to include a turbocharger came about in a non-traditional way:

“After a secret night-time turbo test drive, he stopped at a hot dog kiosk and phoned the engineering department to give the green light for production. The kiosk owner later became Saab’s first turbo customer.”

In 1989, Sten Wennlo wrote a book called “Mitt liv med Saab” (My life with Saab), an autobiography of his professional career with the Saab Car Division of Saab-Scania.
