bmw BMW Says That Acquiring Saab Is Just A Rumor

After receiving official responses from both TATA Motors as well as PSA Peugeot-Citroen lately, it has made me wonder if BMW is the only remaining potential buyer for Saab Automobile.

Update:

However, I just heard back from my contacts at BMW who have been in touch with BMW Headquarters in Munich, Germany and have said this is purely a rumor.

I did hear back from my colleagues in Munich. As I suspected, this is purely a rumor.

Maybe not the news you were looking for, but that’s the status.

Please feel free to contact me anytime. My father-in-law owned a two-stroke SAAB in the early 1960s. Satch Carlson, the editor of the
BMW Car Club of America magazine, “Roundel”, is still a big SAAB fan and I believe still owns a Sonnet.

Take care

Dave

I should emphasize that BMW was the last possibility per Saab Automobile AB’s President Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson stating this was one of the three possibilities last month. With BMW not interested, now what? Do we guess as to who else might be interested that JAJ has not mentioned?

BMW has always been my favorite choice. Although Saab is seen as kind of the anti-BMW marque by many, I think Saab could complement BMW very well without competing against BMW, partly because it is seen as the anti-BMW marque, enabling Saab to fill a different niche. Although attracting different demographics, BMW and Saab are alike in many ways. Aren’t they the only two makes using an ionic engine management system? They both have storied histories. They are both respected worldwide. Saab could be the FWD/XWD, very unique and different marque that attracts buyers that march to a different drummer than the typical BMW buyer. Saab would fit very well between the Mini and BMW, and would not impact on the BMW name, or compete against BMW vehicles, just like Mini hasn’t. And, I think both Saab and BMW are very technologically-minded companies who could only improve each other. I am one of those who would never buy a BMW, but I respect BMW and would be very happy with Saab under BMW ownership.

    Hi Ryan and Ted,

I was just wondering if anybody has mentioned “Fuji Heavy Industries” (the owners of Subaru). Wouldn’t that be a great fit. All those Asian companies have a low end and high end, based on the same model. Subaru and Saab could do the same. (I know it reeks of treason)

I am not impressed with the 9-7X or the 9-2X, yet Saab needed those models, and still does. And the proposed 9-6X did look rather okay. How is Subaru doing during this economic down turns? I still see a lot of new Subarus, and the old ones seem to hold on as well.

See BMW, already is a major player, so buying Saab would not mean broadening their customer base. Plus it could be to elliminate competition.

The only downside of Subaru is that they almost go after the same car driver as Saab. And they have the same footprint in New England. Now what is Subarus footprint in Europe? Are they big over there? This could mean a grand entry, which would make a merger with Saab even more desirable.

They tried with the 9-2X, going forward, Subaru would love the 9-x BH/Air, and all its potential, Plus the XWD and Air roof mechanism. Plus maybe they Aero-X could get build.

    Anyway just a thought,

    Nico

Correction: “yet Saab needed those models, and still does” I meant to say ……and Saab still does need to be present in those segments.

    Nico,
Fuji and Subaru would be fine with me except that Toyota’s partial ownership of both scares me. I want no association with Toyota.
