This project was done with the utilization of an original SAAB two-stroke motor that began in the early 1950′s found in the SAAB model 92s, in combination with Saab Automobile’s Trionic technology that debuted forty years later in 1991.

The Two-Stroke Trionic Project By John Moss first debuted at the 2000 Saab Owners Convention during the final Saab Master Technician Challenge.

The combination of merging these two technology, world’s apart was by none other than John Moss, who also recently presented at last year’s 2008 Saab Owners Convention.

What Hath John Moss Wrought

The comparison to Frankenstein’s monster may be extreme, but the idea is somewhat there.Take a vintage Saab 3-cylinder, 2-stroke engine, remove the carburetor and add the turbocharger and fuel injection system from a I999 9-5 and what do you get?

“Stroketronic,” according to Saab technical guru john Moss, “The idea came from a cross-country drive in a two—strok-er,” Moss says,”I was driving with a General Motors engineer and things like engine speed and altitude got us talking about how the two-stroke is really three one-cylinder engines: one tends to run rich, one tends to run lean and the third runs just right. Electronic fuel injection might just make them all run well together? So, by liberating the necessary parts from the 9-5′s V6, as well as the intake manifold from a 2.U·liter engine, Moss set about his transformation.

The Stroketronic engine utilizes one of the V6′s fuel rails and injectors, which houses three injectors – just right for the 3-cylinder engine. A Saab mass air meter and the complete Saab Trionic T7 Engine management system from a Saab 9-5 controls incoming air and fuel.

Does it run? Yes.

Is John Moss mad? Maybe.

“It’s a joke,” he says.”But it’s a functional joke. You look at this and you start thinking about all the basic elements of making an engine run, particularly Saab engines. |t’s a great tool that way.” ¤

    Darryl,

Hello and good to hear! That convention took place in New York that year, presumably not to far from New Salem Saab?

    Best,
