Saab Automobile U.K. Launches a new Saab 9-3 ‘Turbo’ edition. This model launches a new revised ecopower diesel engine range that reduces CO2 emissions.

What’s interesting about this version, is that it looks like the wheels are what were launched on the first generation Saab 9-3 sport sedan all the way back in 2002, am I mistaken?

Here’s the press release below.

Saab has introduced a Special Edition model to its 9-3 range that allows you to lower your CO2 emissions and improve your driving experience, without compromising your bank balance.

The new Saab 9-3 Turbo Edition comes with an impressive selection of features as standard including 17-inch alloy wheels, leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 9-speaker 150w audio system with MP3 compatibility and cruise control. It is available from just £19,995 for the Saloon and £21,071.60 for the SportWagon.

The new 9-3 Turbo Edition also marks the launch of Saab’s revised EcoPower diesel engine range – technology designed to offer lower CO2 emissions and increased fuel efficiency.

The 1.9TiD 150hp/110 kW engine now produces CO2 emissions of just 137g/km with combined fuel economy of 54.3mpg. The 1.9TTiD 180hp/132 kW twin turbo diesel engine has also been revised, and now produces only 139 g/km and has an impressive combined fuel consumption figure of 53.3mpg. The SportWagon’s figures are also improved for both engines, to 144 g/km and 51.4mpg. This puts most Turbo Edition variants with diesel engines in VED Band E.

In terms of CO2 grams per horsepower, the twin turbo diesel models badged (1.9TTiD) are now among the top performers in their class, delivering on power whilst offering attractive tax benefits for fleet decision makers and business motorists.

David Pugh, General Manager Sales and Marketing Strategy from Saab, said: “The 9-3 Turbo Edition offers a package that is undeniably appealing on all levels – from price to performance and emissions.

With more power for less money than its rivals, and the added bonus of many of the extras from our most prestigious vehicles as standard, this car allows you to travel in luxury for considerably less.”

The Saab 9-3 Turbo Edition is available from dealers now.

*The CO2 reductions refer to manual transmission models; however automatic transmission is also available.

Saab History Learns That Koenigsegg & Power Circle Are Best Choices As Prospective Saab Automobile Owners

Posted on 30. Apr, 2009 by .

I have recently received an e-mail from an anonymous insider. This person has indicated that apparently Saab Automobile believes that the Swedish company Koenigsegg & the Swedish investment group (Power Circle) are to be the best possible buyers for their company at this time.

Swedish company, Koenigsegg is the third automobile manufacturer in Sweden and has a long racing history and is touted as the best company to take ownership of Saab Automobile.

Power Circle is a Swedish investment group coupled with Sweden’s Innovatum in Trollhattan and the country’s largest energy provider, Vattenfall. The Norwegian government has also expressed interest in funding the new hybrid development and electric car projects at Saab Automobile as well.

It looks like right now, unless things change, the Swedish investment group, Koenigsegg & the Swedish Government will be the formation of financially supporting Saab Automobile once emerged from reconstruction on May 20th. Having a fully-Swedish owned & invested company will satisfy the requirements of the Swedish Government’s loan guarantees ensuring sustainability and locality keeping all production, talent, engineering, etc. at Saab Automobile in Sweden.

I should mention that the Power Circle group, and all of the parties involved have not responded to Saab History’s inquiries, and they are the only ones that have not, coincidence?

I leave you with a quote from Saab Automobile’s Eric Geers not too long ago.

“I cannot disclose who they are, but I can confirm that there is a group of investors in Sweden which has shown interest,” Saab spokesman Eric Geers told Automotive News.

The Saab Automobile importer in Belgium has been kind enough to e-mail Saab History some excellent photographs of the Saab Automobile traveling roadshow that is traveling throughout Belgium. This roadshow, completely organized by Saab Belgium has recently started at their headquarters and it will continue to some other dealerships in the area following this event.

On the car carrier, there was what she indicated, a 9-3x, 9-4x BioPower Concept and many Saab 9-3 convertibles on display for people to look at and get excited about.

I wonder if there will be a road show in the United States as well at some point, this is a very good idea.

A thank you to Sofie for providing the photographs and the following information to Saab History!

The roadshow is still going on in Belgium!

Yesterday evening, 6 of our 33 dealers invited their guests at our headoffices, where we exposed the 9-3X, the 9-4X Concept and several 9-3 Convertibles. People were offered a glass of champagne and a walking diner.

We had a great attendance!

(The other dealers invite their guests at their own dealership, on other days)

That’s me in black and my colleague Myrth in purple on pic 414 🙂

Sweden’s E24 have managed to interview Saab Automobile’s appointed lawyer, Guy Lofalk, check it out!

I have translated it for you below.

We have several processes, both the so-called “Carver out”, where we make ourselves independent from GM, the actual reconstruction and sales process run by Deutsche Bank.

In the beginning was 27 stakeholders sign a confidentiality agreement first, but only a dozen have come forward in the process, according to Guy Lofalk.

– It is a very strong and substantial interest from several potential buyers, so far so good, may I say in such a stage, “says Guy Lofalk.

Are they interested in parts or all of Saab Automobile?

– What is being discussed right now is to buy shares in Saab, to make a full equity, “says Guy Lofalk.

At the creditors’ meeting in early April did Guy Lofalk clear that the objective is to Saab to become an independent company that is expected to be sold in June.

– The plan can of course be revised, but it is currently fixed, “says Lofalk.

The rumors about who is interested in Saab are many. Recently data from the Gothenburg newspaper that one of the stakeholders is the Norwegian state. Although a Swedish non-named consortium has been identified as potential buyers as reported in Bloomberg News.

In addition, two investment companies as well.

Guy Lofalk, Saab’s Appointed Lawyer On Reconstruction

Posted on 29. Apr, 2009 by .

Guy Lofalk is Saab Automobile’s appointed lawyer on the reconstruction team leading the process.

Here is a little about his efforts from Sweden’s TTELA

To learn more about him and his company, visit his website directly.

guy2.jpgGuy Lofalk appointed to lead the reconstruction says he has great confidence in the company’s future. But he also comes with the tough news that staff numbers must be reduced.

TROLLHÄTTAN – We must reduce the cost base and the largest part is the employees. The tough news gave lawyer Guy Lofalk now leading efforts to reconstruct Saab.

It was, as expected, lawyer Guy Lofalk that will lead efforts to reconstruct Saab. He, CEO Jan Ã…ke Jonsson, and an international consultant, Stephen Taylor will jointly prepare a reorganization plan that must be completed by May 20th.

The salaries are guaranteed a month ahead of the state wage. However, it is clear that the downsizing of the staff can not be avoided for the simple reason that Saab probably will not produce as many cars this year. But Guy Lofalk could not specify yesterday how many are at risk job, but want to give notice as soon as possible.

– We know it is painful to wait for clearance, “says Guy Lofalk.

Pay cash
The Company will during the reorganization period to pay anything that comes to the factory directly and in cash from now on.
– The debt burden in the reconstruction will not increase, “says Guy Lofalk.

Cuts of liabilities and chord changes with the creditors is just part of the reconstruction.
– A better balance is not enough, “says Guy Lofalk.

The reconstruction must also be operational, that is how the company specifically to change to reverse minus to plus. Not least, the words “divorce” from General Motors implemented.

– This is a complex process, “says Guy Lofalk.

Saab took with him some time ago and he has had time to put a little in the company’s problems. He had yesterday, great confidence in the company’s future.

– For me, the Saab stood for high quality and innovation.

He will be working the next few weeks, mostly on location in Trollhättan.
– The reorganization process should be transparent, we should be as open as possible, “says Guy Lofalk.

Next Generation Saab 9-5 From Saab Barcelona?

I recall the Saab Automobile importer in Chile recently showed photos of the Saab 9-4x, then their website was mysteriously taken offline within 24 hours of their attempt at breaking some news.

Today, Saab Automobile in Spain (Barcelona to be exact), are almost doing the same thing with a teaser image of a guage cluster from the next generation Saab 9-5.

I wonder when the first images of the next generation Saab 9-5 will be here? I am guessing way before the debut at Frankfurt in September?

Saab History’s Hopes Of Saab Automobile North America

Posted on 29. Apr, 2009 by .

Photo Credit: Saab History (proposed future site of Saab Automobile North America, Inc.)

The future is starting to be written with a new owner for Saab Automobile right around the corner. As it has been said numerous times, Saab Automobile will remain in North America, and I hope for a new “Saab Automobile North America, Inc.” as I am calling it, to be relocated from Detroit back to New England.

I have been doing some site scouting recently and have decided on a new headquarters location for Saab Automobile North America.

This location is in the Pease Airport/Tradeport in Portsmouth, New Hampshire right in the tax free sea coast region.

The office space has previously been used by Granite-Embedded and the New England Saab Association, so it’s only suitable for the new Saab Automobile North America, Inc.

Located at an Air Force Base / Industrial Park makes this “Born From Jets” location in the heart of New England on the beautiful sea coast alongside interstate (9-5), the perfect location for the new headquarters.

I also believe that the Saab USA Heritage Center’s press & photo archive as well as media archives should also be relocated here.

Furthermore, the Saab USA Heritage Collection cars should also be relocated and stored at the nearby aircraft hangar at 44 Durham Street also for lease at Pease, which would be appropriate and convenient for the press to drive near the runway, etc.

The site location is too good to pass up and the overhead should not be much for the newly re-established company in the United States.

Here are the details from the Pease Development Group website:

2 International Drive
Portsmouth, New Hampshire

First-class office building totaling 85,000 sq. feet. Premiere location at the gateway to Pease International Tradeport, directly off Route 95 Parking to accommodate 5 spaces per 1,000 sq. feet. Flexible floor plates accommodating tenant’s requirements, subdividable to 3,000 sq. feet. First-class finishes throughout the building. Close to retail shopping, restaurants, banking, day care, and hotels Airport terminal, commercial flights and bus services.

3,793 RSF available 1st floor available
