cars Over Five Hunded Fifty Saabs Destroyed In CARS Program

The full list is in of the Saabs that were “traded” in under the “Cash For Clunkers” program here in the United States. The wrath of the Saabs that were permanently destroyed toppled 550+ according to the reports that are listed on two pages according to Jalopnik (page one, page two)

While the program appeared to be successful in meeting its goal in getting bad cars off of the road, I am surprised to see all of the Saabs that were crushed here including a 2008 model year 9-3? I can’t imagine that all of the vehicles had that poor gas mileage, due to condition and/or or bad combinations of V-6 automatics, that they all were good candidates to be scrapped. I just cannot believe it. There were probably some good cars there including great donor parts.

What I really want to know is what these customers bought after destroying their Saabs, was it a Prius like the guy that lives near LL Bean’s Headquarters, or was it a newer Saab?

For those brave enough to read it, here’s the list of the vehicles by model that are now, permanently destroyed.

For more information on the program, that is now officially over, please visit the CARS website.

Normally I would be in outrage if this was whales or some other endangered species, but are people insane? I scoured the country for a quality C900 turbo 6 months ago and they were all being sent to the dump?!!! People are ridiculous. I wish I had the money to buy up all the old Saabs and start a refuge center.

It is really stupid. In Sweden the government has not introduced this program, but in 16 european countries the same capital destroying has happened.

Love this page buy the way!

I have a SAAB 9000 CS 2,3 170 hp with leather seats from 1997. The 9000 is not as popular as 900, which i used to own, but its is a great car!! Its huge but feels like a small car.

    Anders,

Thanks! It’s really sad that these cars are now off the road permanently, especially with engines that were probably in good shape to begin with. These engines helped to move people to and from where they needed to be including their final stop, the dealer! :( Sad that the engines were destroyed.

    Ryan,

I was once told by the owner of a shop that specialized in SAAB service and repair that the value of a used SAAB engine is next to nothing, the reason being that everyone who has a SAAB already has a good engine and since SAAB engines don’t fit in anything else there is no market for them. Ironic, isn’t it.

It would make me sick to hear that the classic 900s being traded in were getting crushed. I hope that at least the good parts were being salvaged for the benefit of folks like myself that are maintaining and restoring these cars. I expect that a large number of the cars were automatics which are pretty much unfixable or not worth fixing.

That whole “cash for clunkers” thing was an outrage anyway. To think our tax money was being given to other people so they could get a better deal on the trade of a car they didn’t want anymore. Disgusting. The government should at least have taken title to the cars and sold them at auction to at least recoup some of the money spent and make the cars available to people who could have used them.

Saab has the best engines with low fuel consumption. My old SAAB 900 had 38 700 km on the display when I sold it to a SAAB car repair employee. The engine worked like a clock a 130 hp 2,0 16 valve. My “new” 9000 has only 30 600 km on the display and the 2,3 170 hp easyturbo is like new. Traveled 5000 km with a two heavy friends and a lot of luggage to Croatia from Sweden this summer. We drove hard and maxed out many times on German autobahns. The Fuel consumption averaged 0,81 l/10 km. Not bad.
