save saab world "SAVE SAAB" Gatherings Are Growing Around The World

The “SAVE SAAB” campaigns continue to grow around the world at a rapid pace following the kick-off event in Detroit that used the original idea from our friends at the Saab Club of the Netherlands.

This past weekend, Saab Clubs worldwide in nearly 30 countries have successfully organized their own “SAVE SAAB” campaign. This coming weekend, there are now other groups in St. Louis, Chigago, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Paris, Switzerland and Japan planning as well!

I still think we should have a global Saab club organization here between the clubs because this kind of global initiative to “SAVE SAAB” is unprecedented.

If you are planning on having an event in your region of the world that is not listed or needs updating and needs the “SAVE SAAB” artwork, please contact Saab History.

Please take lots of photos and film as well if you can!

The Vic Branch Save Saab Rally was held last Sunday. They had over 30 cars in attendance and met in Port Melbourne. They had press from one our local TV stations here: SBS. We then left in convoy to drive by GM Headquarters Australia before heading onto the Hanging Rock region north from Melbourne for a picnic lunch.

It was amazing to see such a great turn out here in Melbourne, especially since it was organized only within the last week.
Thanks To Steve Bunton, Sandra Scanlon and Steve White for organizing.

Deafening honking sound is heard for the symbolic clock at exact 11:55 front of the Clock headquarters of General Motors (GM) Europe in Rüsselsheim.
More than 60 SAAB vehicles have been brought to a rally here from all over Germany in position to give her testimony SAVE SAAB the right face and GM dissuade them from their plan to let the tradition die SAAB brand. The demand is simple: to destroy rather than to GM to sell the SAAB brand to SPYKER from Holland. This final bidder has rectified its offer several times at the request of GM, and now awaits the decision by GM. In addition to the fully developed SAAB 9-5, which is already running from the tapes in the Swedish Trollhätte to wait another two new models at its launch.

The convoy drove SAAB conspicuously equipped with flags and Fensterstickern by the skyline of Frankfurt and here also expressed his support for the more than 10,000 SAAB-workers expressed that directly and indirectly involved in the production of SAAB vehicles and at a liquidation of the mark would lose their jobs.

At the same time the world took place more than 35 convoys, the statement is the same everywhere:

PRESS RELEASE

Saab Support Convoy Jan 17th, 2010, the Netherlands.

Dutch Saab-enthusiasts show Saab brand is very much alive. Saab Support Convoy intiative followed around the world.

Amsterdam, Jan 9th 2010. On January 17th 2010 over 350 Saab-owners in The Netherlands and Belgium will gather for the “Saab Support Convoy”. Within ten days, over 350 dedicated Saab drivers have joined the initiative of members of the fansite Saabforum.nl.

Even though the outcome of current negotiations is not clear, the participants of the Saab Support Convoy want to show their loyalty to the
brand and their support to employees of Saab. The initiative was quickly picked up internationally, with Saab Support Convoys now being organized in Great Britain, Sweden, Russia, Denmark and even several states in the USA.

The initiators of this event, Eric van Nimwegen and Sidney Polak, are quite amazed by the way this event has evolved. “The folks on the saabforum.nl are an enthusiastic lot, but we never could have guessed that so many of them want to make this statement,” says Eric. “It’s great to see that other countries are following our example.”

“Meanwhile, we’ve got over 35 volunteers in the organization of this event,” according to Sidney. “We want to make sure that this will be a safe and fun event, two characteristics that are usually found in Saab owners and their cars.”

The Saab Support Convoy will start from eight sublocations in the Netherlands and Belgium and gather on the Military Aviation Museum in
Soesterberg. From there on, the Convoy of 350+ Saab cars will drive to Muiden for an informal gathering.

Meanwhile, the dedicated supporters of Saab in the UK have enjoyed 17th January a fabulous day, with the best weather since months, good company and the finest selection of Saab history brought together in a festive convoy, leading from Luton to IWM Duxford.

Please find attached a few snapshots from the gathering at Duxford Imperial War Museum, this part was limited to some 80 cars. Mr Saab, Erik Carlsson cut the cake and enjoyed the overwhelming amount of international support for Saab.

Total amount of cars joining in the convoy approximately 120, we picked up some more down the road, average 3+ passengers, some 400 people involved in total.

The local GM workers Union in Luton showed their support along the route we followed passing the Saab UK head quarters.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Saab Enthusiast Gathering Near GM Renn Center To Save Saab

On Thursday, January 7th, a deadline will expire and GM will ultimately need to decide the fate of Saab Automobile.

“Sell Opposed To Shutdown”. There are two known interested parties that have submitted bids to buy Saab, Spyker Cars & Merbanco.

As time is of the essence, Saab Enthusiasts have therefore decided to take an initiative by gathering near GM’s world headquarters in Detroit, in order to send a message to GM to “SELL SAAB”.

Saab owners and enthusiasts from the U.S. & Canada will gather near the GM Renaissance Center at approximately 1pm by showing their unwavering Saab spirit in lining up their Saabs, holding Signs, taking group photographs and speaking to the press about how important it is to sell Saab.

Since GM emerged from bankruptcy court this summer, they are now 60% owned by the U.S. Government. Saab owners, Saab dealers and U.S. taxpayers alike, all want to see Saab sold in order to preserve thousands of jobs and and nearly $500 million dollars from the 218 Saab dealerships, small business assets in the United States.

“If there are enough Saab owners and enthusiasts parked outside of the GM Renaissance center in Detroit, perhaps we could really show them how serious we are in wanting Saab Automobile to have a bright future and be sold.” says Ryan Emge, editor of SaabHistory.com, an independent promotional news site.

This timely event marks a final effort in the Saab Community to save a company that has historically seen the value in saving the lives of its customers.

What: Saab Enthusiast Gathering Near GM Renn Center To Save Saab

When: Meet On Tuesday, January 5th at noon. / Saab Car Gathering is at 1pm nearby. (Press To Attend)

Saab History has just received the first photo from the SAVE SAAB event in New York City today. It looks like there was quite a turnout of well over 75-100 Saabs!

Here’s a summary from Steve G., a Saab History frequenter with his comments. I really hope to see photos at Time Square!

Saabs with their flashers on as far as the eye can see going through Times Square and the crowd that made it to Liberty State Park. Unfortunately due to misty weather and some logistical issues we didn’t get the photo op at the statue itself, but the turnout was between 50 and 60 cars at the finish point.

Folks were pointing and cheering throughout Manhattan and especially through Times Square. Without a police escort, keeping everyone together through the streets of NYC was a challenge but kudos to the organizing team for doing a great job

During our parade down Route 66 we had other SAAB owners pulling up along side of us, asking what was going on and trying to join the event. Even non-SAABers rolled their windows down asking us what was going on. It was great for us to show and share our pride in a state where little is known about the brand.

The Southern California “Save Saab” convoy has just gotten back to Saab History with a Saab count of about 30.

It seemed to go quite well for them as they described in their summary below. For more photos, click here.

For more details, please click here.

We took about a 120 mile road trip up the California coast, to near the small town where the *Sideways* movie was filmed. We had about 30 cars in attendance, and had after party at a local tavern that was originally a stage coach stop in the pioneer days of the West Coast of America.

It was a balmy 55 degrees F despite how much clothing people appear to be wearing, and since we didn’t think there was a support convoy in Hawaii or Alaska, we were probably the last Save Saab Caravan still at it (the caravan part at least).

A little off of the subject ,but has anyone noticed that there have been several articles posted on Google which are old news.My example is right now their most recent new posing when one references “Saab news”and the current article is misinforming as it’s an old release from the 11th of January 2010.It’s heading “GM says Sabb is closing -no viable bids”talk about people afoot trying to damage any positivity currently taking place with Stryker,…the article states that it is from the Victoria Times Colonist but in checking closely it is from a reposting in Miami. I’m apalled by this !!! I hope someelse can witness it as this has been the third day in a row this has happened.

The total count for Brookline was 96 some people forgot to register and some came later in the day an emailed me their info. All and all a good day though impending weather cut it short.

    Hi Ryan,
I wasn’t in tokyo convoy in japan, I was in Brookline convoy.
    it was quite experience.
It seemed nonsense for me to push japanese supporter to show their support, but it was worth to make some bridge between you and them.
something in common “They love Saab!”
I know that their convoy pictures came in so late though.

Wow, this is amazing… I was misinformed by this one website that it was only held in Detroit and that “this must be all the Saab enthusiasts in the whole world” but they’re just a bunch of douchebags.

I was surprised that Japan also had these gatherings… I looked it up, and there were two more meetings other than Tokyo. Nagoya seems to be one of those places
