The former Presidents of Saab Automobile in the United States while under previous GM ownership, Jay Spenchian (2005-2007) as well as Steve Shannon (2007-2009), were both dismissed from their duties as executives at GM this week, according to Ad Age.

Jay Spenchian began with Saab Automobile USA on March 31st, 2005 and was involved in the “Born From Jets” advertising campaign and saw the 50th anniversary of Saab in the United States in 2006.

Steve Shannon, who was interviewed at the New York Auto Show last year, led the company beginning on April 16th 2007, during a challenging time as the company itself was converted into a premium brand group, then dissolved as GM began to express its interest in shedding it’s former Saab brand.

This is sad news on a personal level because Jay Spenchian rode with me in my SPG when I crossed the millionth mile marker, at the 2006 Saab Convention, at Lake George, NY. He was also instrumental in convincing the bean counters upstairs to award me with my 9-5 Aero Combi, to maximize Saab’s publicity.

How ironic that 2006 was the best year ever for Saab and Canadian sales rose 20%. This was in conjunction with scores of worldwide media interviews. I actually approached Saab USA with this marketing proposal and I estimated that they received about $US 2 million dollars worth of publicity in exchange for the 9-5, which Jay personally flew to Milwaukee, WI to do the presentation, together with Jan-Willem Vester.

Steve Shannon was very accessible and always fun to be with at the conventions. In fact he often approached me first to ask me, “How I was doing.”

Now that GM no longer holds the puppet strings, is there a possibility they will be hired by Victor? Or does GM hold a contract forbidding them to work for competitors (not that they are in the same league anyhow)?

I have spoken in great length this weekend with a friend that is a writer for Fortune and a friend of Victors. I am almost surtain that the new SAAB will not re-hire the GM guys that only had a flash in the pan passion for the brand. I met them as well and most were Brooks Brother clones from the Ren Center void of any original thoights or a true understanding of the DNA of the SAAB brand.
