New Design Director at Saab Automobile

    * Former Pininfarina and Bertone designer joins Saab leadership team
* Will lead design for Saab’s product expansion program

Trollhättan, Sweden: Saab Automobile today announced the appointment of former Bertone and Pininfarina designer Jason Castriota as its new Design Director.

Castriota, 36, now takes the lead role in design at Saab, reporting directly to Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson. He and his design company will be responsible for exterior and interior design and will lead the design activities at Saab as the brand renews and broadens its product range.

Announcing the appointment, Jan Åke Jonsson said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jason to our leadership team. He has an outstanding track record in automotive design and will help us take the brand forward. He will play a key role in expressing all that’s best in the innovative tradition of Saab design as we carry our brand’s roots into the future.”

“I’m greatly looking forward to joining such an iconic brand,” said Castriota. “Saab has a very strong and distinctive heritage which gives it great potential to develop. This is an exciting opportunity for me to help shape its future products.”

Victor Muller, Saab Automobile’s Chairman, added: “Bringing a young, highly-talented designer to Saab underlines the company’s determination to produce cars which stand out because of their unique aircraft inspired, Swedish identity. With Jason heading up Saab design, we will be making landmark cars for the foreseeable future.”

Castriota hails from New York and graduated from Emerson College in Boston before attending the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In 2001, he left the college to join Pininfarina’s design studio in Turin, Italy. He took up the position of Director of Design at Stile Bertone in 2008 and then opened a design consultancy with offices in New York and Turin.

His recruitment is an important strategic step by Saab in its renaissance as a newly-independent carmaker.

Note to Editors:

Saab Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (Swedish Aircraft Company) was founded in 1937 as an aircraft manufacturer and revealed its first prototype passenger car 10 years later after the formation of the Saab Car Division. In 1990, Saab Automobile AB was created as a separate company, jointly owned by the Saab Scania Group and General Motors, and became a wholly-owned GM subsidiary in 2000. In February 2010, Spyker Cars N.V. of the Netherlands, acquired the company from GM as an independently-run business.

Saab cars reflect the brand’s unique Scandinavian design ethic, which is fused with its aircraft engineering heritage. The company is a global premium car maker with a distinguished history of innovation. It is recognized for its pioneering role in turbocharging, as well as occupant safety and the introduction of flex-fuel technology through Saab BioPower. Saab Automobile AB currently employs approximately 3,500 staff in Sweden, where it operates world-class production and technical development facilities at its headquarters in Trollhättan, 70 km north of Gothenburg.

With the Saab clubs in Europe taking the initiative to set up a convoy to Saab Automobile’s headquarters in Sweden, a week after the January 7th deadline, I think us here in the United States and Canada can do something even more effective.

I think it would make much more sense for us Saab owners and enthusiasts in the United States and Canada, to organize a nice convoy to Detroit. This convoy should take place next week, arriving within hours of the GM board meeting. this is the meeting where they will ultimately decide the fate of Saab Automobile’s future.

If we get enough Saab owners and enthusiasts parked outside of the GM Renaissance center in Detroit, perhaps we could really show them how serious we are in wanting Saab Automobile to have a bright future and be sold.

I think this would be the ideal location and timely, given that it would be on the day of the GM board meeting. Let’s get moving on this. Anyone know the time and date of the GM Board meeting next week? Let’s fill this parking lot and show a strong gathering of support for Saab! I think it would be a win-win for everyone involved. The press would of course love it too!

Assuming the weather is cooperative, all you need to do is drive there, park, hang out for a few hours, talk with the press, get some group photographs and show your Saab pride!

It’s up to those attending on the ground, to make the best determination as to exactly where on that day.

The press are already covering this event and it has not even started yet!

The Saab Club of The Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden are all planning a group convoy of Saabs to drive to Saab Automobile’s facilities in Trollhättan, Sweden on January 17th, 2010.

Apparently at around 11am, they will arrive at the Saab Car Museum and then sometime at around 1:30pm (13:30), a huge convoy will drive around the Saab Factory, the Saab Technical Center and so forth. The folks in the Netherlands are also planning on finishing their trip at the Spyker factory in their home country upon their return.

The idea apparently behind this is to get a lot of press to show up to see the visual support of the car company. While I see this as a good idea, I have to stop and consider two things that are critical to this grassroots initiative.

1) Timing If a deal is to be completed by next week on January 7th, why would this event need to take place 10 days later?

2) Location I wonder why they are choosing to drive to Saab’s headquarters, what’s the point?

TTELA reports that a new deadline for the Saab bid is January 7th. It’s also worth noting that Saab Automobile’s factory is set to restart on January 11th, so let’s use this as our final deadline if the 7th is delayed by a few days.

New deadline for Saab bid

Stockholm, General Motors, Saab Spykers deadline for bids has been pushed back to January 7, states Spykers CEO Victor Muller of Reuters.
Mullen will now be more potential buyers than Spyker.

- This is something we have not heard of it yet, “said Anette Hellgren, union president of the Union at Saab’s Trollhattan factory, if the new deadline.

- I understand that the 31st was something that we thrust in the GM’s side in connection with the settlement announcement. Contrary, I have taken it so that it will hold on until it is finished.

Anette Hellgren says GM for a discussion with Spyker and it not strange that it set a deadline.

But timing is not important, as Koenigsegg, referring to when they pulled out?

- That’s it. There is a business plan that we so much want to follow.

- And the longer it drags on, the tougher it becomes, “says Anette Hellgren.

She does not believe there is a big gap between the end of December and January 7 from that aspect.

- There is no cow on the ice since the production is stopped for a second week next year.

Any board meeting at Saab was not scheduled either on Wednesday or Thursday.

Saab Automobile sends an update to their employees about the status of the company, the December 31st deadline that is no longer and the ongoing bids.

Work continues

After GM’s decision and communication December 18, the work of planning the decommissioning of Saab Automobile continued, while GM continues to evaluate the stakeholders that are in force a purchase of the company. This work has also continued during and after Christmas and will continue into the new year. Since the settlement decision December 18 is the deadline previously announced by GM – that is, on 31 December – no longer current. We are now waiting for information about GM’s reaction to the bids received.

Saab commitment to grow while increasing and the customers, enthusiasts who select retailers worldwide in various forms, its support for Saab. Special groups and so-called “fan pages” on Facebook has been started, and we see evidence of petition campaigns and open letters. One of the latest examples is the song “Griffin up!” By David Blumberg, located at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-jUir7ypPU

With this, we wish all the employees a nice New Year’s Eve and a Happy New Year and we will return with information as soon as something new is to bring.

As we wait yet another week until we learn about the future of Saab Automobile, I’d like to showcase more about what Saab has in store.

Earlier this year, Saab Automobile launched a new advertising campaign which highlighted the new Saab to give us an idea of what’s to come.

I have provided these television ads that were created as part of that campaign below. The first ad was done in in the spring focusing on the newly independent Saab and what to expect in the future

The second television ad for the newly independent Saab Automobile campaign “Changing Perspectives” that featured the Saab 9-3x.

I will be very interested to see what their third television ad will be that features the all new Saab 9-5.

We have to keep finding inspiration wherever we can at this time and show our support for Saab’s sale process.

Someone at Saab should contact the U.S. government for reviving negotiations on Saab’s future.

Stefan Löfven, IF Metall Chairman

- We have decided to do all that is necessary. We want to know that when this is over, no matter how it ends, so we have done our very best, “said Stefan Löfven, president of IF Metall.

IF Metal, The Union of Sweden and engineers are trying to contact the U.S. government to influence negotiations on Saab’s future. The U.S. government since the financial crisis is the majority shareholder in GM.

Exactly who to talk to unions and what will be said to Stefan Löfven not reveal. He thinks that it is reasonable to try to get help from the U.S. government to influence the GM to actually sell the Saab and not spend it

- The market determines. Hopefully it will be a business deal. What we want to point out is that if a buyer can finance it should be put behind the wheel and actually do so. It is also about the thousands of people’s jobs.

Want GM to sell Saab?

- I assume it but nothing is certain and that is why it is so important that GM is actually very eliminates any doubt, “said Stefan Löfven, IF Metall chairman.

Saab Automobile has four product roll-outs over the next year and a half which are the Saab 9-3x, All New Saab 9-5 Sedan & SportCombi, Saab 9-4x. In total, that’s six new vehicle models that will be rolled out and there could be more.

I thought it was appropriate to showcase these new products, so we can see them altogether giving us a visual of what the new product line will look like for Saab. Here’s hoping that Saab is successfully sold next week and we all get to see the gradual addition of all of these vehicles into the production lineup for Saab Automobile.

Saab History hears from GM this morning about our interest in learning about their response regarding the ongoing negotiations with the bidders.

I would say that while most of expected a response by Thursday, December 31st at the latest, learning that it could be the next week comes as a surprise.

What is the most surprising however, is GM’s response they have given me permission to reproduce here for you today. GM states that they “don’t have a deadline to respond or make a statement”.

The clock is ticking for Saab, or is it? It appears that both GM & Spyker Cars aren’t concerned about the December 31st deadline any longer.

This morning, Bloomberg is surprisingly reporting that, GM may not decide this week.

In speaking with Saab Automobile’s union leader, Paul Akerlund, the decision may be next week. Saab History has been in touch with Mr. Muller of Spyker Cars as well very early this morning when the news broke and learned that this is quite possible.

This puts the question into play, so what about the December 31st deadline? Is that still valid and if so, is it just GM’s response that will take place next week, assuming that if a deal is to be complete, it just needs to be submitted before this date?

If a decision is made next week, would be during their monthly GM board meeting which is presumably on or around the first week of the month?

Here is Bloomberg’s article below:

Dec. 29 (Bloomberg) — General Motors Co. is prepared to wait beyond the end of this week before deciding on the future of the Saab brand as it reviews remaining bids, according to Paul Aakerlund, a board member at the Swedish carmaker.

GM told Saab last week that it would wind down the unit and simultaneously continue talks with bidders about a sale, said Aakerlund, who also heads the IF Metall union at Saab. Negotiations to sell Saab to Spyker Cars NV collapsed Dec. 18 and Spyker Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller blamed the failed deal partly on a “strict deadline” for an agreement by Dec. 31. The Dutch carmaker submitted a new offer on Dec. 20.

“It’s our understanding that if there’s a bid that GM finds sufficiently interesting, then the 31st of December is not a date that’s holy,” Aakerlund said in a phone interview today.

Some 3,500 Saab jobs are at risk, along with thousands of positions among suppliers to the automotive industry in Sweden. Two attempts to sell the 72-year-old brand failed in the past five weeks and since then GM has said it received inquiries from “several parties.” The brand is among four being sold or shut as GM focuses on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac after its July 10 bankruptcy exit.

GM’s position hasn’t changed since its Dec. 18 statement, Chris Preuss, a company spokesman in Detroit, said yesterday. “We are winding down Saab and talking with interested parties as part of that process. We will not comment further,” he said in an e-mail.

Merbanco, Spyker

Talks with GM are now focusing on two suitors: Merbanco Inc., the Wyoming-based group that revised its bid after bringing in Swedish investors, and Zeewolde, Netherlands-based Spyker, according to two people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

Merbanco President Chris Johnston declined to comment.

CEO Muller said it’s difficult to evaluate Spyker’s chances, or predict whether GM will shut down or sell Saab. “We were the frontrunner the week before last, but today I wouldn’t make that claim,” he said yesterday in a phone interview.

“It is a high-risk situation,” said Michael Robinet, an analyst at consultant CSM Worldwide Inc. in Northville, Michigan. “Given the movement of the assets and the discontinuance of support from GM, it would be difficult to continue business even resembling what it used to.”

The failure of GM’s initial talks with Spyker marked the second time efforts faltered to sell Saab. Swedish sports-car maker Koenigsegg Group AB, which had backing from Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., walked away from a deal last month. Beijing Auto paid $200 million to buy technology from Saab to use in its own cars.

Volvo Sale

Ford Motor Co., which didn’t join GM and Chrysler Group LLC in declaring bankruptcy and taking a U.S. bailout, said last week that it agreed with China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. on most terms for a sale of the Volvo Car Corp. unit, which is also based in Sweden.

Merbanco was one of the final three bidders for Saab in June when GM decided to go with Koeniggsegg, people familiar with the situation have said.

“They’re working with the bids they’ve received for Saab,” Aakerlund said today. “Spyker and others are very willing to buy Saab, so we’re still hoping for that solution.”

Saab hasn’t started the wind-down process, Aakerlund said. Saab’s factory in Trollhaettan is closed for the holidays and is scheduled to reopen Jan. 11.

“We still haven’t received any clear instructions about what a wind-down would entail,” Aakerlund said. “It’s far from certain they will say anything the next few days.”

Sweden’s SVD published a recent interview with Spyker Cars CEO, that indicates that he expects a response by GM with a decision before the end of the year, even if the author of this article doesn’t believe that December 31st is valid any longer.

In my correspondence with Mr. Muller of Spyker Cars tonight, he indicates that “things are moving along with GM.” This is good to hear and it’s the first news of the week about the status of Spyker Cars progress with GM since last week.

The end of the year is Friday, December 31st, so a decision would have to be made tomorrow, Wednesday or Thursday at the latest.

Spyker expect a decision this year

Last update: 28 December 2009, 19:07

Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller is expecting that General Motors, GM, to answer whether the new bid to be accepted before New Year’s day. But GM has already decided on the closure and the deadline for the New Year is no longer valid. It says Hakan Danielsson, Board of Saab, the Svenska Dagbladet Näringsliv.

On Christmas Eve, leaving the last Saab speculator, sports car manufacturer Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller, Sweden, Trollhättan, and returned to Holland. It was just before Christmas he last spoke with representatives from GM. Since then there has been silence from across the Atlantic.

- We expect a response from GM this week. Since the deadline is December 31 so I expect very much that they are of themselves very soon, “said Victor Muller, but he believes that it is difficult to predict whether the deal will go through.

- I’m very hopeful, I have been since its inception. We have done everything we possibly can.

What reactions did you get in Sweden by Saab representatives?

- To date the response has been very encouraging. Everyone wants to of course make sure that Saab will survive and if it can happen thanks to Spyker, I believe that people can be very happy.

Have you been in contact with former speculator Koenigsegg Group?

- Yes, I know Christian very well, “said Victor Muller and admits that he and Christian von Koenigsegg has talked a lot with each other on the Saab.

- We have definitely, he has been very helpful. He did not give me the business plan but it’s the same business now as they worked on with Saab. So our business plan is basically the same.

As SvD Business said last week, had a shorter Saab board meeting the day before Christmas, when representatives from GM was present via telephone from the United States. The discussions then focused entirely on the closure of Saab.

- We have received the order and then GM may make a counter-order if it would not be so and it has not done so, says Hakan Danielsson, President of Academics Association / Swedish engineers, who sit with the Saab board.

He declares that it has not happened on any new Saab-front without all that might work with the closure or the total bids have Christmas holiday.

But New Year’s is coming soon and Victor Muller seems to be focused on this important process, according to Hakan Danielsson.

- New Year’s limit was whether it would sell Saab from GM’s side. But then you came to this decision to close down well before year end. And then they said, while that in the closing phase was willing to look at the interesting quotes. So I do not think that the date 31/12 is as sacred anymore.

Dr. Gene C. Rapaille, a French-born, US-based marketing expert, wants Saab and believes that he has the key to turning around Saab Automobile.

I certainly would not put this individual down as prospective buyer, but he does have some good points about the value in Saving Saab, not just as an automobile company, but a critical brand for Sweden and in terms of design in a global sense.

He wrote Saab History, The local and other media sources this early morning with the following details below:

I want Saab.

Give me Saab, and I will save it and make it prosper again.

Why me? I have been working for most of the car makers in the world (GM, Chrysler, Honda, Renault, Citroen, Ford? and Fortune magazine labeled me the “Car Shrink.” Not only do I psychoanalyze cultures, but I also psychoanalyze cars and brands. I have done this work around the world ? in Europe, North and South America, China, India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Brazil, Russia, etc.

Beside that, I love cars? I have a passion for them, I collect them.

My work has been used to design and sell the PT cruiser (2.5 million cars sold) see the Wall street journal article attached to this email.

Why Saab? This is a fantastic brand and we should not let it die. This is a brand which has a tribe of loyal followers and represents the core value of the Swedish culture. This is the image of Sweden in the world; this is an element of the Swedish contribution to the world. We cannot let it die.

Why Now?

The world is tired of generic cars? all coming from the same platform, and having no identity (this is how GM killed Saab). The time of management by engineers is over (see what they did to Detroit and GM). Now is the time of Marketers, and Anthropologists, who understand the symbolic added value of a Brand and why people want to be loyal to their brand (people do not buy a brand, they JOIN A BRAND). Marketers understand what people want and why they want it. The new world has moved. The new markets are called BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) and I have been studying and doing
business in these countries for years. They want a strong brand with a strong identity, and they have the money…. and they are going to want a Saab again.

So, what do I wish for:

*         $1 dollar a year salary (one)
* 25 percent of the shares in stock option at today price value.
* Total power to take the company where it has to go, and to negotiate with all stake holders (banks, distributors, employees, suppliers) of the company.
* The freedom to choose my team and all justifiable expenses paid.
* Total support from the Swedish government.
* A medal if I succeed (symbolic recognition).
*         When can we start?

NOW

We should have an emergency meeting in Trollhättan, Sweden, ASAP and have a damage assessment meeting, a resource evaluation (what is left?), and have a BRAND resurrection plan based on the higher purpose of the brand, (what element of the Swedish culture is the Brand responsible to perpetuate?)

I hope the descendants of Bernadotte will be proud of me.

I know this is Christmas and one can dream!!! But Jan-Åke Jonsson (Saab) Swedish Deputy Minister Maud Olofsson and Undersecretary of State Joran
Hagglund should be on my side.

Dr. G. C. Rapaille

Archetype Discoveries Worldwide

Saab History has just received the following information that from a colleague in the United States stating that you can make also help make a difference.

As Saab Automobile’s fate is to be determined in now less than 4 days, it could be ultimately up to you that ensure that Saab is saved and here in the United States, the dealership network is preserved and all of the related business continue.

Here is a writeup from a colleague below:

Call Your US State Senators and US House Representatives TODAY!!!!!

Every US citizen who is concerned about Saab’s future needs to ACT TODAY! Time is running out. A decision by GM not to sell Saab is unethical, injurious, arbitrary and simply bad business. This needs to be made more public! We need to alert the media and our elected politicians about this while there is still time to prevent GM from injuring all of us. Please follow the links below to find the US Senator and House Representative for your State. For your Representative you will need your zip code +4. I have included the US Postal link for your convenience.

U.S. Senate
House Of Representatives
Zip Codes

Saab Talking Points

* Important note! : Two deals exist (Spyker and Merbanco). Both match GM’s initial offer for sale as well as address all the additional concerns raised by GM!

* What’s At Stake?: As a result of GM’s decision to shut down Saab, about 5,000 jobs will be lost at the dealership level in the US. It is not a very large number, but each of those losses can be avoided.

* Additional Information: The US taxpayer currently owns 61% of GM via $30+ billion of bailout funds and outstanding loans of an additional $4.5 billion.

This is it, this is the last and final week that Saab Automobile’s fate is to be determined. This fate will ultimately be decided by GM, and here’s hoping that the decision to sell the company to the known entities Spyker Cars, Merbanco or other rumored parties goes as planned.

It was year ago this month when GM indicated that they were planning on selling Saab by the end of 2009. Over the course of this year, Saab had undergone a complete reorganization over 6-months. During that time, Saab Automobile developed a business plan which is to be used for their new independent ownership.

Their original buyer Koenigsegg terminated their program to buy Saab in November which created more pressure for Saab and GM to get things moving, and that’s when Spyker Cars publicly announced their bid. This initial bid however,, was rejected and on December 18th, GM indicated that Saab was to be wound down. Immediately following this rejection, Spyker Cars submitted a revised bid and that has been in process ever since. Immediately following this revised bid, GM made a statement indicating that they still were pursuing interested parties that wanted to buy Saab. These other known and unknown interested parties that also want to buy Saab Automobile, have not made any public statements about such interest at this time.

We have now arrived at the remaining four days for such a deal to be completed. I have said it before and I will say it again, I cannot see a future without Saab Automobile, so here’s hoping a deal is completed prior to the end of the day, Thursday, December 31st, 2009.

Spyker Cars CEO, Victor Muller indicates to Saab History in an e-mail this morning, that the news sources which have reported that their bid has been rejected, are “nonsense”.

The following news sources that have mis-reported this are Automobile Magazine, Economic times.

Saabs United, have since retracted their original post.

Here’s an updated official statement from GM following the response from Mr. Muller that Saab History has also received this morning.

“Our statement from Sunday is still valid. Thanks.” That statement is that they are still looking at the offers at this time.

I know it is the day before the holidays here in the U.S., but I have to say that these news sources just need to keep quiet. I have the belief that no news is good news. We now need to enjoy our times with family and friends between now and this weekend.

As I have said before and I will say it again, the news about the future of Saab will be reported early next week, so please disregard what main stream media sources are saying at this time. Unless something official comes from Spyker or GM between now and then, let’s have a happy holiday!
