In Toronto, Canada someone has decided to put some Saab 9-2x vehicles to use within a Ferris Wheel.

They even created a movie as it was put together, please pardon the music.

Here are more details of this dynamic alternative automobile experience:

This drive-in ferris wheel hoists four vehicles at a time into the air providing the same amusement park view formerly experienced by pedestrians. The work literally elevates visitorsʼ automobiles upward, in a circular motion to view the panorama of the location.

The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery facilitated the installation of Mobile Fun at Harbourfront in Toronto in partnership with liveARTs and the Toronto Zoo.

As a follow-up to the posting I made back in November of 2006 on the logo history, it is about time that I compliment this information with the following on the correct capitalization and nomenclature of the models of the Saab Automobile brand. I hope this sheds some more light in our dialog about Saabs, SAABs and all of the great products that have been developed over the years.

I have provided a fairly well written piece already done on Wikipedia that I would like to articulate if I may regarding the correct capitalization and model nomenclature as a guide.

It is my hope that as a result of this posting, others will be able to better articulate their writing and speaking when referring to all of Saab’s products from 1947 until present. I also think that this posting will help to end search criteria that is typically entered in Google as follows: (SAAB 93 XWD, SAAB 92 ABS, Saab 94 Ski Rack, 2001 SAAB 95, 1999 93, etc.) If this search criteria was taken literally, as it should as google can only do just that, we would have had Cross Wheel Drive available in the late 1950′s, ABS in the late forties, and two long production runs for the SAAB Ninety Five and Ninety Three. Let’s hope that this clarifies this naming and model nomenclature once and for all.

1947-1969 (Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget)

The Company: When referring to the company in both written and oral communication where the products were produced between 1947 and 1969, it is proper to use SAAB in all capital letters to refer to these vehicles.

The Models: When referring to vehicles model nomenclature in both written and oral communication that were produced during this time, they are written and pronounced as 92 (Pronounced: Ninety Two), 92 (Pronounced: Ninety Three), 94 (Pronounced: Ninety Four), 95 (Pronounced: Ninety Five), 96 (Pronounced: Ninety Six), 97 (Pronounced: Ninety Seven)

1970-2000 (Saab-Scania)

* Note: Although the merger took place in 1990, the original products continued. (excluding NG900, 9-3 & 9-5)

The Company: When referring to the company in both written and oral communication where the products were produced between 1970 and 1990, it is proper & acceptable to refer to them as Saabs in lower case letters or Saab-Scania vehicles, also in lower case letters.

The Models: When referring to vehicles model nomenclature in both written and oral communication that were produced during this time, they are written and produced as 97 (Pronounced: Ninety Seven), 98 (Pronounced: Ninety Eight), 99 (Pronounced: Ninety Nine), 90 (Pronounced: Ninety), 900 (Pronounced: Nine Hundred), 9000 (Pronounced: Nine Thousand), 9-5 (Pronounced: Nine Five), NG900 (Pronounced: New Generation 900), 9-3 (Pronounced: Nine Three).

2001 – Present (Saab Automobile / General Motors)

The Company: When referring to the company in both written and oral communication where the products were produced between 2001 and the Present, it is proper & acceptable to refer to them as Saab in lower case letters and/or Saab Automobile / GM vehicles.

The Models: When referring to vehicles model nomenclature in both written and oral communication that were produced during this time, they are written and produced as 9-X (Pronounced: Nine X), 9-2x (Pronounced: Nine Two X), 9-3x (Pronounced: Nine Three X), 9-3 (Pronounced: Nine Three), 9-4x (Pronounced: Nine Four X), 9-5 (Pronounced: Nine Five), 9-7x (Pronounced: Nine Seven X)

I leave you with a brief summary from Saab Automobile’s entry from Wikipedia.

Saab / SAAB Correct Capitalization and Model Nomenclature:

While Saab is in fact an acronym, and, as with many other manufacturers, the word “SAAB” appears in all-capitals within the corporate emblem and in on-vehicle badging, the current correct capitalization of Saab when in print is “Saab,” and not “SAAB.”[citation needed] Other manufacturers such as Volvo, Toyota, Lexus, Acura, and Chevrolet employ the use of all-capitalized vehicle badging, but they are still considered proper names and capitalized as such when written. Likewise, Saab is treated as a proper name and not an acronym, despite its origins..”[citation needed]

Furthermore, all current Saab vehicles are badged with a large 9 and a smaller 3, 5, or 7x following the 9, such as “9³”. However, the digits are considered separate, and are spoken as, for example, “nine three,” and written as “9-3.” Nearly every Saab model ever produced has begun with the number 9 (Saab 600 being an exception), and Saab’s two models became 9-3 and 9-5 in the late 1990s, which was likely a marketing attempt at positioning the vehicles as direct competitors to the BMW 3-series and 5-series, respectively.

In 2005, as well as 2002, Saab Cars, USA, as they were formally named, decided to host a promotion with Crested Butte Resort in Colorado in order to promote their new at the time, Saab 9-2x AWD vehicle where you get 4 free season passes included. This sounds like it was a great deal and a win-win for both the ski resort and the Saab Automobile brand.

It would be interesting to see what current Saab 9-2x pwners thought about participating in this promotion in receiving ski tickets. I think similiar events like this should all be launched across the country around the same time to be the beginning of a 3-year long agreement with all of the participating ski resorts.

As a result of my recent postings, many Ski resorts have already indicated that they are very interested in having Saab back again as a sponsor. This thread on promoting Saab’s new XWD equipped models at ski resorts is now clearly becoming more and more relevant as the momentum is building.

Here is the original press release from Saab USA:

Saab: Official Vehicle of Crested Butte

Saab has partnered with this award-winning resort to create seasonal travel packages and high-performance experiences, both on the slopes and on the mountain roads.

Complimentary Ski Lift Passes

Now, when you purchase or lease any new Saab, you’ll receive a complimentary, season ski lift pass to Crested Butte Mountain Resort. You may invite immediate family members or up to three guests to be included on the season ski lift pass.

Visit your local Saab dealership today and take advantage of this unique offer. Or call 1-800-585-7701 for more information.

This offer expires December 31, 2005. The complimentary season ski lift pass is good through April, 2006. For more information about the Crested Butte Resort, visit their Web site.

2005 SAAB 9-2X AERO

Following the successful launch of the entirely new 9-3 Sport Sedan, Saab set an all-time sales record in the United States in 2003. But clouds loomed on the horizon, as several European competitors announced new premium compact products, threatening to undercut the 9-3’s market position.

Lacking a homegrown answer, Saab found a suitable product solution by creating the 9-2X. It was produced for Saab by GM’s strategic alliance partner, Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan, with exterior and interior styling, chassis development and overall refinement done by Saab in Sweden.

Being the first-ever Saab to offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard equipment, the 9-2X debuted in the United States and Canada in the summer of 2004. It was available in two versions, both featuring horizontally opposed four-cylinder engines: the normally aspirated 165-horsepower 2.5L Linear and the turbocharged, intercooled 227-horsepower 2.0L Aero. The latter was directly recognizable by a more aggressive front fascia, plus a functional air intake on the hood.

The 9-2X attracted a passionate following, consisting mostly of young customers who were new to the Saab family. The car also won important awards and recognitions. It received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s “Top Safety Pick” Gold Award (along with the Saab 9-3) for its outstanding crash test performance. Consumer Reports named the 9-2X (along with the Saab 9-5) a “Recommended Buy.”

Saab sold nearly 10,300 9-2Xs. When GM and Fuji Heavy Industries dissolved their partnership, production of the Saab 9-2X came to an end in 2006.

The Smoke Silver Metallic 9-2X Aero in the Saab Automobile USA Heritage Collection is a very early 2005 model. It served as a long-term test car with Los Angeles-based European Car Magazine, which provided the car with several enhancements and upgrades.

Saab Automobile product range: Safe, versatile, practical, unique and progressive.
IKEA product range — Modern, functional, attractive, and progressive.

- Different companies, similiar product philosophies

Here is a photo that was recently provided to me of a Saab 99 that at the time, was the choice Saab model for those trips to IKEA. I was wondering how many of you have made it to IKEA in your Saab and have found that the plat-packed design of many IKEA goods works well with the utility and practicality of the Saab Automobile.

In the discussions I have had, I have heard from people that the 9000 was the best, and I have also heard that the 900 convertible was the best because the top goes down and the sky is the limit. Is there a “best” Saab model for such an arrangement?

In an effort to get your responses, I have provided a poll below for you to choose what Saab model in your opinion, is most suited at being the “best” Saab for an IKEA trip. I look forward to your poll results.

Update: Incredible voter turnout today! I have closed the poll at 150, It looks as though the Saab 9-5 SportCombi is the winner! I will post more on this in the coming days.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The Saab Palette continues to expand into new colors along with the growth of the brand.

When one thinks back to some of the colors that stood out over the rest, do you think of Monte Carlo Yellow with the 1992 900 Convertible or Odoardo Grey with the SPG or is it Watermelon Green being used as the color by default with the SAAB 92?

I have developed with the help of my peers, a series of charts representing the paint names and codes used for every Saab model that has ever existed (minus concept cars) The objective of this project is accuracy, completeness and clarity.

Finally, a comprehensive color palette listing that includes the names, codes as well as real-life examples of what these colors look like on the year and models they were used on.

It seemed appropriate to finally release this project in-lieu of being complete so that the public can get a chance to see it and hopefully contribute to the project with additions, modifications and real-life photos of their Saab for those examples of the colors in application.

Please take a look at the new Color Palette section on the right-hand column and contact us with your contribution to the list, enjoy!

Here is a story of how a Saab saved a life of a visitor that owns a 9-2x. In case you did not know, the Saab 9-2x was ranked as “Top Safety Pick” by the IIHS Only Luxury Car Manufacturer with Two IIHS “Gold Awards” in 2006.

Below is the official press release on safety from Saab Automobile USA.

5-18-2006

Detroit, Mich. — With the 9-2X premium compact joining the 9-3 Sport Sedan, Saab is the first luxury carmaker to receive a pair of ‘Top Safety Pick – Gold Award’ designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Gold Award is a best-of-the-best distinction that recognizes car designs that provide the best occupant protection in front, side and rear crashes based on Institute testing.

“We commend Saab for making the 9-2X the second Saab vehicle to earn our demanding Top Safety Pick award”, said Adrian Lund, President of the IIHS.

The IIHS frontal impact test is carried out at 40 mph against a deformable fixed barrier, with a 40 percent driver’s side offset. In the IIHS side impact test a deformable barrier constructed to resemble a full-size sport utility vehicle, is propelled at 31 mph against the driver’s side of the car to measure side impact protection. The rear-end test simulates a 20-mph rear impact into a stationary car, during which the front seat/head restraint performance is assessed.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a non-profit research and communications organization in the United States funded by auto insurers. It investigates the crashworthiness of vehicles. More information at www.IIHS.org

This personal story should set the record straight for real-life safety in the Saab 9-2x.

Thank you very much for your contribution below.

I was driving home from work Friday, less than a mile from home when suddenly a Sante Fe pulled a left hand turn in front of me, I slowed to miss her and then
the trailing GMC S15 pulled in front too. No chance to avoid, hit her head-on at 40mph. Both bags deploy, I unbelt, jump out and help the teenage girl driver out of her car and to the side of the intersection after checking for injuries.

Both cars look totaled – GMC had to be 4-wheel dragged off the road – front totally squashed, wheels turned in etc etc. My Aero is totally crumpled back to the wheel wheels – radiator crushed and drained, hood rolled up to the windshield – but all 4 wheels were were turning and the tow rolled it out of the intersection. All doors/hatch still opened, no glass or crush into the passenger compartment. Police thought I was a responder (active duty Navy in uniform) vice one of the victims – deputy was surprised that I had walked out unaided.

I’m sore and have a sprained wrist and a bruised right shin (I was downshifting to avoid car #1) but the hospital kept Xraying looking for broken bones – couldn’t believe I had escaped so cheap in a high energy accident. Waiting to hear about other driver – her insurance called that night to claim responsibility and make arrangements.

I know this thread needs pictures – I’ll get them from my professional photographer neighbor who came down and photographed everything.

I want my car back but I’m thinking it’s a total.

My takeaways – wear your belts, hone your driving skills, drive a car that can avoid trouble and if it finds you, drive one that can help you survive.

The Saab 9-2x, notable for it’s introduction of all-wheel drive, has had an interesting history and as of the first of this year, has recently hit the end of it’s journey. The Saab 9-2x can now be officially classified as a limited edition, collector’s car.

Here is a historical tribute to the Saab 9-2′s contribution to the Saab Brand.

2003

First press release and video from the 2003 Auto Show in Los Angeles where the 9-2x made it’s first debut.

12-18-2003

* Early entry in emerging premium sports compact segment
* Standard full-time all-wheel-drive for improved handling, traction and versatility
* Two models – 227 hp 9-2X Aero and the 165 hp 9-2X Linear
* Styling, performance and driving characteristics create a sporty, fun-to-drive offer in the segment
* Start of sales in the U.S. and Canada in July 2004

The new 2005 Saab 9-2X is the next significant step in the biggest product development program in Saab’s history. Saab – the fastest growing European premium car brand in the American market– recently launched the 9-3 Sport Sedan and 9-3 Convertible model ranges. Now the new 9-2X continues this product offensive.

With standard full-time all-wheel-drive, powerful engines, and distinctive European design, the Saab 9-2X is a unique and early offering in a car segment just emerging in the American market: the premium sports compact segment. The first Saab 9-2X models will go on sale in the U.S. and Canada July 1, 2004 – ahead of many competitors who are also bringing products to this market.

“The Saab 9-2X is the ideal addition to our line-up,” says Peter Augustsson, Saab’s President and CEO. “Like the recently-launched Saab 9-3 models, it is extremely dynamic and is a car that you want to drive. Additionally, its price point will attract some new, young, enthusiastic customers to Saab.”

For many customers, the Saab 9-2X will be their first premium brand vehicle as prices start below $25,000. In addition, customer surveys show that up to 40 percent of all Americans are looking for all-wheel-drive in their next vehicle – a feature standard in all Saab 9-2X models, a distinct advantage as Saab enters this new segment.

“The Saab 9-2X will help us continue our extremely strong momentum,” said Debra Kelly-Ennis, President of Saab Cars USA. “We are definitely on a roll. The 9-3 Sport Sedan is more than doubling the sales of its predecessor, we are in the midst of launching our all-new 9-3 Convertible, and this exciting new car will arrive in the early summer 2004.”

The Design: Progressive with a strong, dynamic character
“As the new 9-2X range is tremendously fun to drive and since we are targeting a young and enthusiastic customer, we decided to express the strong and dynamic character of the 9-2X in its design and even add a bit more of an aggressive touch compared to the rest of our line-up,” comments Saab’s Executive Director of Design, Michael Mauer.

The new Saab 9-2X takes a number of styling cues from recently-presented Saab concept and production vehicles and presents Saab’s view on what a fun-to-drive, versatile 5-door vehicle should look like.

“The Saab 9-2X needs to look as aggressive as its driving capabilities,” says Mauer. “Additionally, even though it is a functional 5-door vehicle, it shouldn’t look like a traditional hatchback. Therefore, we spent a great deal of time making sure it had a strong face and sleek Scandinavian lines.”

The vehicle retains Saab’s now familiar curvaceous front that harmoniously integrates the typical three-hole-grille and the low horizontally emphasized headlamps that wrap around into the sides of the car. Below the bumper area, a pronounced air intake signals the dynamic potential of the new sports compact. On the top-of-the-line 9-2X Aero model, the clean line of the front hood is accentuated by a nicely integrated air intake that feeds air to the intercooler of the turbocharged engine.

As with the 2004 Saab 9-5 Aero SportWagon, the horizontal lines in the design of the
9-2X’s rear end contribute to the car’s wide and powerful stance. Additionally, the rear apron’s dark accent provides a sporty flair.

Performance: Sporty and focused on the driver
The Saab 9-2X’s advanced full-time all-wheel-drive and boxer four cylinder engines are firsts in Saab’s history. Further technical highlights include four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes which, when partnered with a latest generation
4-channel/4-sensor anti-lock brake system (ABS), provide enhanced driver control. Traction and handling performance of the 9-2X Aero is further improved by a viscous limited-slip differential at the rear.

The turbocharged and intercooled two-liter high performance DOHC 9-2X Aero engine produces 227 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 217 lb.-ft. (294 Nm) of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The power plant of the Saab 9-2X 2.5 is naturally aspirated and delivers 165 hp @ 5,600 rpm as well as a maximum torque of 166 lb.-ft. (225 Nm) @ 4,000 rpm. Both cars provide a standard
5-speed manual transmission; a 4-speed automatic transmission is available as an option.

“The Saab 9-2X is the best example yet of Saab’s brand promise of delivering sporty, driver focused performance,” says Kjell-Åke Eriksson, Saab Executive Director for Future Products. “It is truly designed for people who love to drive, whether that be on a demanding section of a curvy road or during a relaxed long-distance drive on the highway.”

Five-door Versatility: Form follows function
Surfboards, skis, in-line skates, camping gear and more all fit well into the Saab 9-2X. With a wheelbase of 99.4 inches (2,525 mm) and an overall length of 175.6 inches (4,460 mm), the Saab 9-2X offers nimble handling around town and on backcountry roads. It also holds up to 27.9 cubic feet (790 dm3) of cargo space with the seatback up and 61.6 cubic feet (1,744 dm3) with the seatback folded down. A 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback is standard in all 9-2X models and the large rear luggage door opening gives optimal access to the trunk space provided.

Weighing in at just under 3,100 pounds (1,400 kilos), all 9-2X versions return excellent highway mileage anticipated to be in the 26 to 28 mpg range.

Peter Augustsson, Saab Automobile’s President and CEO, puts the launch of the Saab 9-2X in broader perspective: “The Saab 9-2X is a milestone in expanding our model range and our customer base, especially in the very important North American market. We see a rapidly emerging segment in the United States for a premium, small car below the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan. And being one of the first entries, we intend to shape that segment.”

2004

The 9-2x was officially released in 2004 and came in two models, the Linear and Aero models.

In 2006, the Saab 9-2x was ranked as “Top Safety Pick” by the IIHS Only Luxury Car Manufacturer with Two IIHS “Gold Awards”

Saab 9-2X joins 9-3 Sport Sedan as “Top Safety Pick” Gold Award from the IIHS.

Below is the official press release from Saab Automobile USA.

Three members of missing family found alive
See Photo

Three members of a family missing on vacation in Oregon were found alive today in Southern Oregon.

Kati Kim and her two young children, missing since Nov. 25, were spotted by a helicopter crew walking along Bear Camp Road and waving an umbrella west of Grants Pass at about 1:45 p.m. today.

The helicopter was able to land and lifted them to a Grants Pass hospital. Authorities said they are in good condition, although one child might need to spend the night at the hospital.

James Kim, Kati Kim’s husband, is still missing. Police say he left the family in their car at 7:45 a.m. Saturday to go for help and had said he would return by 1 p.m.

Additional search crews and resources are being diverted to the area to help try to locate the father. Authorities said they were tracking what they believed to be the footprints of James Kim.

Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said crews will continue the search through the night, if necessary. Searchers planned to add dog and horse teams Wednesday morning, if necessary, and might deploy searchers on the river.

Authorities said the family apparently got stuck in snow. It had some provisions in the car and managed to keep the heat going until the car ran out of gas. When the gas ran out, the family burned tires to stay warm.

On August 13th, 2006, Saab 9-2x owners from New York , New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut met for the The North East Tri-State chapter driving event. There were twelve, count it, 12 9-2x’s caravaning through some of the most scenic roads in the North East. I give this club some real respect that they may not be receiving in traditional Saab Enthusiast venues such as the Saab Owners Convention, as well as many local saab club circles. The organization and enthusiasm in this organization is commendable!

Their group shot is brilliant, especially with the placement of the laser red 9-2x in the middle of the silver, black and blue 9-2xs on the perimeter.

Group Photo

There is even a 9-2x available in the same color on the European version of Saab Expressions (English page) for most. http://europe.saabexpressions.com/Products/Product.aspx?ItemId=43860&ParentSectionId=&FromSectionId=2644&LanguageId=1&CurrencyId=10&index=
Scale Model 9-2x

This meeting was their second meeting ever, and they even managed to put together a nice little promotional video of the event. If I were a 9-2x owner, this video would have sold me as a participating member in a New York minute. Excellent job!

The 9-2x Promo Video

It looks as though your efforts have worked and the club is gaining momentum in membership. Keep up the great work and please keep the videos coming!

Saab 9-2X gets More Horsepower for 2006, Pricing Unchanged

Detroit, Mich. — The all-wheel drive Saab 9-2X enters it second year of production with a more powerful engine in the Aero model, more horsepower and a new name for the base model, and simplified option packages. At the same time, MSRP’s for 2006 9-2X’s remain unchanged from 2005.

The 2006 9-2X Aero pays tribute to Saab’s signature torque heritage with a new 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder boxer engine that makes 230 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 235 lb. ft of torque @ 3,600 rpm (up from 227-hp/217 lb. ft. last year).

Seventeen-inch all-season tires will be available on the Aero. Sixteen-inch all-season rubber continues to be standard on both 2.5i and Aero models.

The former Linear model will now be called the 2.5i, reflecting the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. This naturally aspirated engine is now rated at 173-hp @ 6,000 rpm, up eight horsepower from last year. Peak torque is slightly adjusted to 166 lb.-ft. @ 4,400 rpm.

9-2X MSRP’s remain unchanged in 2006 at $22,990 for the 2.5i and $26,950 for the Aero. Destination charges, however, will increase $25 to $720, bringing the prices to $23,710 and $27,670, respectively.

An available Leather Package includes leather appointed seats and door inserts on the Aero. The 2.5i also gets a leather steering wheel, gearshift knob, and hand brake boot. 2005′s Premium Package is deleted from both models.

The 9-2X Aero’s Sport Package is revised to include 17-inch wheels with all-season performance tread and xenon headlamps. The power moonroof on the Aero becomes a stand-alone option.

The 2006 9-2X Aero will be available in Midnight Black Mica, Arctic Silver Metallic and Brilliant Red.

The full-time all-wheel drive system, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and four-speed automatic/five speed manual transmissions remain unchanged for 2006.

The 9-2X is part of the most aggressive product development offensive in Saab’s 58-year history as an automaker. Also in 2005, Saab introduced its first-ever SUV, the 9-7X, and will launch the five-door 9-3 SportCombi and a refreshed 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi. All 2006 9-3 Aero models will feature a new 2.8L Turbo V6 that generates 250-hp and 258 lb. ft. of torque as standard equipment.

Saab is a division of General Motors Corp. Saab USA is the importer and distributor of Saab 9-2X, 9-3 and 9-5 automobiles and the distributor of the 9-7X sport utility for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. For more information, please visit www.saabusa.com.

The new Saab 92X is the next significant step in the biggest product development program in Saab’s history.
With aggressive pricing, the Saab 92X will be the first premium brand vehicle for many of its customers. With this vehicle, Saab expects to attract customers, in their early stages of their career, who are cosmopolitan and open-minded, and who appreciate the sophisticated style of a European brand.

Pricing starts at $22,990 for the 92X Linear, equipped with a 165-hp 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 all-season tires, AM/FM/CD stereo system, climate control system, cruise control, tilt-adjustable steering column, power door locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, power-adjustable exterior mirrors and rear window wiper/washer.

The 92X Aero model, with its 227-hp turbocharged and intercooled 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, is priced at $26,950. In addition to equipment on the 92X Linear, the Aero model distinguishes itself with larger front brake discs, hood-mounted intercooler air intake, front fog lamps, unique light alloy wheels, automatic climate control system, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, metallic-rimmed instrument dials, sport textile upholstery, leather wrapped sport steering wheel, shifter knob and handbrake handle.

Both Linear and Aero models come with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. Available option packages include leather-appointed trim and upholstery, power sunroof, xenon headlights, heated seats and more.

2003-12-08

Saab 9-2X: Summary

New Benchmark Among Dynamic Premium Compacts

ï‚· Early entry in emerging premium sports compact segment
ï‚· Standard full-time all-wheel-drive for improved handling, traction and versatility
ï‚· Two models – 227 hp 9-2X Aero and the 165 hp 9-2X Linear
ï‚· Styling, performance and driving characteristics create a sporty, fun-to-drive offer in the segment
ï‚· Start of sales in the U.S. and Canada in July 2004

Saab to add 9-2 Model to its Product Line in 2004

Saab announces a cooperation with Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (Fuji) to produce a new performance-oriented all-wheel drive model — the Saab 9-2 — in Spring 2004. The new vehicle will provide Saab with a capable, dynamic entry below the new 9-3 Sport Sedan.

NEW YORK — Continuing with its biggest ever product offensive, Saab Automobile AB expands its product line further with the introduction of the new Saab 9-2. The 9-2 will be Saab’s entry offer and will help attract new, younger customers to the brand. It is targeted at customers looking for a distinctive, fun-to-drive car with the versatility to support an active lifestyle. As customers would expect from Saab, the 9-2 will feature excellent driving dynamics with its sophisticated all-wheel drive system and turbo performance as well as great versatility with its hatchback body style.

Leveraging the global resources of the GM Group, Saab Automobile AB is collaborating with Fuji of Japan to create the new Saab 9-2 model in cooperation with Subaru, Fuji’s automotive division.

“We see an emerging segment in the United States for a premium, small car below the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan,” says Peter Augustsson, President and CEO of Saab Automobile AB.

“The Saab 9-2 is a result of collaboration between two like-minded brands. We both have a special aircraft heritage and a successful history in rallying, and our cars are known as dynamic, safe and fun-to-drive. It makes a lot of sense for us to combine our strengths in creating the next Saab and bring it to the market quickly,” says Augustsson.

Saab will offer two versions of the new 9-2, both five-door, all-wheel drive cars. The base Saab 9-2 will be equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the Aero version will feature a high performance, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Initially, the vehicle will only be offered in the United States and Canadian markets.

“Both brands have this special flair,” said Bob Lutz, GM’s Vice Chairman for Product Development. “It is such a natural fit for them to combine their talents and expertise to bring the first all-wheel-drive performance car into the Saab family — a car with great dynamic qualities and exhilarating performance.”

The new Saab 9-2 will be produced in Fuji’s facilities in Japan, beginning in the spring of 2004.

Saab Automobile AB, based in Trollhättan, Sweden, is fully owned by GM, which has a 20 percent stake in Fuji.
