Saab Cars North America Announces Pricing on 2010 Model Year 9-3 Vehicles

    * Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices reduced on all 2010 model year 9-3 variants
* 2010 model year vehicles to begin arriving in showrooms in April

DETROIT – Saab Cars North America today announced that manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing will be reduced for all 2010 model year 9-3 vehicles. These are the first 2010 model year Saab vehicles produced for the U.S. market and closely follow the recent acquisition of Saab Automobile AB by Spyker Cars NV

An exciting line-up of model year 2010 vehicles will arrive during the next few weeks to dealer showrooms across the United States. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for every 2010 model year 9-3 variant has been reduced anywhere from 4 to 12 percent compared to model year 2009.

“This pricing action allows Saab to be in-line with the market and maintains accessibility of Saab’s rich Swedish heritage, innovation and responsible performance for our many loyal owners, enthusiasts and potential new customers,” said Mike Colleran, President and COO, Saab Cars North America.

Topping the list for 2010 is an all-new 9-3X premium cross-over model. Powered by Saab’s 2.0 liter turbocharged engine and available with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, the 9-3X offers sporty performance without the typical penalty of high fuel consumption. Add in the standard cross-wheel drive (XWD) with electronic limited slip differential (eLSD) and raised chassis, the 9-3X delivers an all-road driving experience you can take with you no matter where your road leads. The 9-3X starts at $37,800 MSRP.

The 9-3 Sport Sedan is available in two trim levels, 2.0T and Aero, and both can be specified with either front wheel drive or with Saab’s Cross-Wheel Drive (XWD) system. Sport Sedan starting prices range from $29,725 MSRP for the 2.0T to $38,940 MSRP for the Aero model. Both cars offer a host of standard equipment with the Aero adding sport-focused features such as 17” alloy wheels, more aggressive front fascia, interior trim with two-tone leather seats, thicker sport steering wheel, a sport tuned chassis, and dual bright exhaust tailpipes. OnStar with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity is available on 2.0T models and comes standard on the Aero. A Bose six-CD audio system and XM Satellite Radio are also standard Aero content. Memory driver seat and rear park assist are available on Aero models in the optional Premium Package.

The 9-3 SportCombi offers a sedan-like driving experience with the added cargo carrying flexibility so many drivers desire. Standard equipment and available options on the front-wheel drive SportCombi are the same as the 9-3 Sport Sedan. SportCombi starting prices range from $31,155 MSRP for the 2.0T to $37,845 MSRP for the Aero model.

The stylish 9-3 Convertible model prices range from $40,815 MSRP for the 2.0T to $45,905 MSRP for the Aero. The convertible offers a special edition package with leather steering wheel, Xenon headlamps and XM Satellite Radio for $695.

Exciting new colors, including glacier silver metallic and arctic white, are available for all body styles.

“Saab Cars North America is committed to bringing customers options they need to enhance their active lifestyles by providing appealing design, sporty driving attributes, reliability and safety—all at an affordable price,” said Colleran.

About Saab: Saab entered the auto business in 1949 with the first model 92. Its aerodynamic shape and advanced technology drew from the company’s roots as an aircraft maker, and helped create what was to become a loyal and passionate customer base. GM acquired a 50 percent stake in Saab in 1990, and acquired the balance of Saab in 2000. As part of its strategy to focus on its four strongest brands in the U.S., GM began seeking a buyer for Saab in January 2009, a concerted effort that led to Spyker Cars NV purchasing Saab Automobile AB from General Motors on February 23, 2010.

Saab Automobile Germany is offering a special “Erik Carlsson” Edition of the Saab 9-3. This model is a truly to the rally legend’s recent 80th birthday.

Here is the press release loosely translated by Google:

Saab 9-3 Erik Carlsson

     * Special model for the 80th Birthday of the rally legend
* Modern technology and all-wheel turbo engine with 240 hp

Rüsselsheim. Two victories in the Saab 96 in the legendary Monte Carlo Rally and a hat trick in the RAC Rally in England, the Swede Erik Carlsson and rally legend made. Also known as “Carlsson on the Roof” the Saab ambassador celebrated his 80th Birthday in March. For the Swedish premium brand, it was reason enough with the special model Saab 9-3 Erik Carlsson rally as a tribute to remember their traditions and rally successes. The Saab 9-3 Erik Carlsson Saab presents itself as a typical combination of sportiness and safety – with a powerful 240 hp engine and the ultra-modern four-wheel drive XWD (Cross Wheel Drive) and electronic differential lock ELSD.

Sport-feeling – outside and inside

A doppelflutige exhaust system, a subtle, silver-colored front spoiler, a diffuser on the rear and standard 18-inch wheels give the Erik Carlsson Saab 9-3 a sporty appearance. Optional is a sports exhaust system, a sports suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The interior consists of sporty-elegant impression continued: door, cockpit and center console in Carbon Fairings optics contribute to the sporty character of the tactile quality of leather dashboard, hand brake and shifting.

Saab Drive – Power with Responsibility

The heart of the new Saab 9-3 Erik Carlsson is the partner with Saab Hirsch Performance engine and developed the modern four-wheel Saab XWD technology. The two-liter turbo engine makes 240 hp and a torque of 350 Newton meters. That makes a sprint from stand to 100 in just 7.3 seconds, top speed is 245 km / h. Despite the impressive performance of the fuel consumption is only 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers.

The modern Saab XWD all-wheel system distributes the torque of the motor depending on the needs continuously between the front and rear axle and ensures optimal grip and stability in all situations.

An important part of the system is an electronically controlled torque distribution (TTD – Torque Transfer Device), the force is distributed between the axles. A valve increases or decreases the hydraulic pressure on the Nasskupplung inside the TTD is activated or deactivated, and so gradually the rear axle. The degree of slip is, how much the rear wheels are driven. The force distribution between the two axes can, in extreme cases by almost 100 percent vary. The electronic locking differential (ELSD) – also standard part of the special model – works on the same principle: It distributes the engine driving the rear axle in practice, also with close to 100 percent of the wheel, which has more grip.

The Saab 9-3 is Erik Carlsson as a sports sedan from 42,350 euros, the Sport Combi will cost 43,950 euros.

I have recently read an acceptable review of a 2009 Saab 9-3 Aero XWD SportCombi. The journalist that did the review, peaked my initial interest with the following opener where I was throwing my hands up saying, yes finally someone with their head on straight.

“The end of the sport-utility era is upon us. It is now time to explore outside of the box and delve into the world of wagons.”

Already grinning, I continued reading and realized that this individual had some background when it came to the Saab product range over the years, but I was surprised about his shock and awe about the ignition being between the seats. I guess this person had more experience with Saab 9000s where the ignition was in the conventional location instead?

The journalist went on to say that the navigation system and the bluetooth systems were lacking, and I should add, this makes sense given they were clear after thoughts, even though the nav system was integrated whereas the bluetooth system was obviously not.

What I did like was, for a brief moment anyways, an actual mention of the XWD system onboard where it handled predictably in slush and snow. Of course, I really wanted more, because couldn’t that have been said in any auto review anytime, anywhere? Furthermore, where was the eLSD? That wasn’t even mentioned at all.

One aspect that was questionable about the Saab is its cross-wheel drive system, known as XWD. Historically, Audi and Subaru are known as the winter powerhouses building bulletproof systems. Saab brought its “A” game, though, because, during a recent ice storm that coated the tri-state region, the car held up remarkably well.

The SportCombi managed to maintain traction. When I forced it out of stability, its movements were predictable and composed. Pushing through slush and snow, the 9-3 does not panic and squirm. Instead, it surges onward, plowing onward.

The last mention that got a smile from yours truly, but no surprises given the V6 powertrain, was the obvious performance of the Aero model.

As the revs climbed and the speedometer counted hastily upwards like an altimeter, I did not end up airborne, much to my chagrin. I firmly believe take off was imminent, though.

Passing in any gear is effortless due to the car’s staggering turbo, which, when it kicks in, pulls your head back no matter how much you try to brace against it.

All in all, the writer did cover some of the basis, did an acceptable job, lacked photos while having some prior Saab knowledge, but I must admit, I am getting kind of tired of every journalist getting stuck with a Saab 9-3 Aero Automatic, but at least this time the car was probably delivered with actual snow tires, one would hope, were they true directionals, I’d doubt it. At least this journalist was in New Jersey, USA instead of Canada, so we got a different test this time in a different market.

For the record, I have just placed an official request for a test drive of a 2009 Saab 9-3 XWD w/ eLSD SportCombi in a 5-speed manual. I will keep you up to speed on this process, because I believe it is about time that we get a thorough real-life test drive of a right-sized cross-wheel drive Sportcombi with a stick, not a gas guzzling Aero with an automatic, maximizing fuel efficiency and on-road safety and performance in the best possible package.

Here is the third and final installment for the new Saab television ads from McCann-Erickson for the 9-3 range.
I would have expected something a bit more impressive given its the first ad for the 9-3 SportCombi with McCann.

The ads only featured the 9-3 model range including the 9-3 Convertible, 9-3 Sport Sedan & 9-3 Sport Combi all in silver.

General Motors Launches Saab 9-3 Range “Surprised” from a series of ads for the rest of their brands. The ad begins with the IIHS safety ratings about the Saab 9-3 range, then ends with a “surprised” question at the end, followed by a spliced in “red tag” event blurb which ends January 5th, 2009.

In General Motor’s attempt to sell their brand and make some cash in the process, they are working hard at eliminating inventory, but potentially at the expense of customers, who may be turned away by the association with GM. Remember the old saying “Guilty by Association”?

So, in answer to GM’s ad, I will answer their “surprised?” tagline. I am surprised how you bought a brand, then nearly 20 years later you decided to sell it because you finally had realized that you’ve exhausted it and now actually had to invest it. Furthermore, I am also surprised how you believe that today, after all of the ongoing negative press GM is associated with, you believe it is a good idea to associate a good brand like Saab with GM, and tell everyone about it too!

So yes, I am surprised of many things, but I should say I am no longer surprised by GM’s mismanagement of Saab as it’s par for the course. They have proven that they do not value investing in the Saab brand. Surprised? Not so much, if you spend the time and do your research.

Saab Automobile USA are releasing a “25th Special 9-3 Convertible” which will be showing at the Los Angeles Auto Show that begins on November 22nd.

This edition, as I suspected is only for the United States, because back in September Saab Automobile released an almost identical version called the “Air Edition” for Europe, although that version had multiple engine options along with uniform aluminum colored Turbo-X wheels.

This “25th Anniversary” edition is interesting, because although technically it has been 25 years since the 900 Cabriolet Prototype hit the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1983, however Saab Automobile released a Saab 9-3 Convertible “20th Anniversary” edition back in 2006, two years ago, not 5.

I do want to use this an opportunity to thank former President of Saab-Scania of America, Bob Sinclair for the idea of the convertible and pitching it to Sten Wennlo back in 1983, and getting the prototypes built by ASC (American Sunroof Company) here in the United States. I also want to thank Saab Automobile USA for recognizing this during the 20th anniversary of the convertible in 2006 by having a media event in Southern California showing appreciation to Bob Sinclair.

The press release is below, and as you can see there is only one engine option for this U.S. edition unlike Europe, and omitting the Turbo-X wheels, but instead including an abundant set of wheels from inventory that debuted a whole three years ago. Why is it that Saab Automobile continue to waste time and energy on something like this, where an anniversary edition was already done 2 years and with much better execution I must say.

While the Saab 9-3 Convertible in its present form is a good car, this special edition is redundant and in my opinion undermines the 20th edition Saab 9-3 convertible launch back in 2006. The least they could have done, as one commenter on Motortrend suggested: “Outfit the converitble with a burgundy leather interior and white exterior paint job if they were serious about making it a true historical “anniversary edition” successor.”

I suggest you read what others are also saying on Motortrend and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/12/la-2008-preview-saab-25th-anniversary-special-edition-9-3-conve/"target="_blank">Autoblog.

For Immediate Release — November 12, 2008

American debut at Los Angeles auto show
Saab Celebrates 25 years of Convertibles with Special Edition
DETROIT – The first ever Saab Convertible made its world debut at the Frankfurt auto show in the fall of 1983. Now, 25 years later, a Special Edition makes its American debut at the Los Angeles International auto show which opens to the public on November 22. This new version of the Saab 9-3 Convertible will be showcased in a unique bright champagne metallic color.
Saab surprised the automotive world when it pioneered the concept of a ‘four season, four-seat’ soft top Convertible. Designed to be practical and stylish, the Scandinavian-styled convertible changed the perception of open top vehicles to be used all the year round.

“Saab has sold more than a quarter of a million convertibles worldwide and this latest edition highlights the timeless design and responsible performance that Saab convertibles have always represented,” said Steve Shannon, executive director, marketing and product, Saab Automobile USA.
The special edition Saab Convertible will be available in three metallic colors to include Jet Black, Carbon Grey and the new Bright Champagne. It will feature Saab’s signature 2.0-liter, 210 hp four cylinder engine and can be matched to six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions.
Special content includes influences from the Turbo X performance model, such as the design of the front bumper and steering wheel plus carbon fiber interior finishes and black floor mats with grey binding. Like the Aero version, the rear shows dual exhaust pipes and an anthracite grey bumper insert. Five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels will be standard.
Expected to arrive in dealer showrooms in January 2009, the Saab 9-3 2.0T Special Edition Convertible will be priced starting at $ 46,725 including destination charges.

En-route to Shaw Saab in Norwell, Massachusetts I could not ignore a fairly obvious Saab 93 XWD ad on a billboard while ironically driving on the Southbound lane of Interstate 93 within the Boston, Massachusetts limits.

This past November Boston, Massachusetts was the location for the North American launch of the XWD halo vehicle for the Saab brand, the Saab 9-3 Turbo-X. I was there as a guest of Saab Automobile USA, and thanks to Saab of Hunterdon & JMK Saab, I had the opportunity to film the event for us to enjoy!

This ad is only placed for South bound traffic as they leave Boston, and apparently the cost for the North bound lane to Boston is approximately twice the price!

It seems that since that time, Jim on the series has upgraded his Saab 9-2x to a titanium grey 2008 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan as shown at the end of the season opener last Thursday.

In this scene, Jim arrives in style at a fuel station (looks like the ones I normally see in Connecticut) to meet up with Pam to propose to her.

Way to go Jim for maintaining your appreciation & enthusiam for the Saab Automobile, perhaps we will see more of your new ride tonight or later this season?

I almost had heart failure as I heard this news as of late…

According to the Touring Car Times., Saab Automobile is officially returning to racing in 2009 beginning with the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) with a red 2009 Saab 9-3 BioPower Sport Sedan.

The STCC began in 1996 and has never involved a Saab in the championship, so here’s some optimism for their involvement next year.

For the record, it was 1980 when Saab Automobile was officially engaged in racing, rallying & touring. However, since then, they have been funding private parties racing ever since, so let’s not forget about that. These activities included at least most recently, the Pikes Peak events in 1997, 2000 and again in 2002, the Michelin Race of Champions in 2000 and even the Saab Pearl team run in North America in 2006!

We have also had a number of Saab rally drivers over the years, most notably Erik “On the Roof” Carlsson, Stig Blomqvist, Per Eklund, Simo Lampinen and others.

Today, we have a growing younger audience and need a new face to racing for Saab Automobile, if this engagement in STCC and other events will be the first official return to racing since 1980.

If you recall from my recent interview with the former head of marketing and PR at the Saab Car Division of Saab-Scania, Sten Wennlo, Erik Carlsson was asked by him to race and be involved in the PR department. This took place back in the early days of SAAB, in order to appeal to getting younger drivers behind the wheel of the 96, and it worked
It looks like our new driver may be Jens Edman, which is good because he’s experienced yet young enough to once again help bring younger drivers to the Saab brand!

I’ve recently e-mailed Saab Automobile’s motorsport manager, Bjorn Berglof, but his e-mail has bounced, so I have responded by e-mailing Saab Automobile Sweden’s Communications department to see if they have some more material and insight into Saab Automobile formally competing in this race.

I am excited to see this car as you will read below, it is already being tested at Saab Automobile’s test track behind the Saab Factory in Trollhättan, the same one where the 9-X Air concept was driven recently.

Here is the press release by Touring Car Times:

By Johan Meissner Thursday, 25 September 2008 11:49 CET

The new manufacturer for the Swedish Touring Car Championship has been revealed: Saab.

A brand new Saab 93 BioPower has been build in S2000 specification by the team Dealer Sport. STCC race winner Jens Edman completed a shakedown of the car two days ago at Saab’s test track in Trollhättan, Sweden.

Edman was more than pleased with the first run of the new Saab and hopes to be back in the STCC next year.

“It was a perfect day, we had absolutely no problems at all with the car. We only did 15 laps, but the car felt great,” said Edman to TouringCarTimes.com.

Team boss and team owner Jan Warnestad was equally pleased with the first outing of the new S2000 Saab.

“We are more than pleased with the new STCC Saab! We think the car will be a strong competitor in the STCC-field, especially thanks to Saab’s strong position in the BioPower-area,” said Warnestad.

The team Dealer Sport, previously named Opel Team Sweden, ran an Opel Astra for Tommy Rustad in STCC 2007, but pulled out from the series ahead of the 2008 season. Edman was negotiating with the team ahead of the 2008 season, but if Edman will be behind the wheel of the car next year remains to be seen.

“We are discussing things for next year at the moment. It would have been really nice to be back in the STCC, I have been in Denmark for six years now. The STCC has grown really strong and I hope to be back for 2009,” said Edman.

Saab has backed the team during the building of the first S2000 Saab. Bt the level of official involvement from Saab in the team next year is unknown so far.

The engine of the car is Saab’s four cylinder, two liter engine and will be run on bio-ethanol. The gearbox is a six-speed sequential from Xtrac, the same one the team used in the Opel Astra.

The car will complete a test run during the final race of the STCC at Mantorp Park this weekend. Stay tuned for a video and more pictures of the car!

The Saab 9-3 SportCombi debuted in 2005 in Trollhättan, Sweden, two years after the Saab 9-3 Sport Hatch concept was shown to the public.

In june of the launch year, the Sport Combi was the model that reached the four million model production milestone. This mark, for the Saab Automobile brand, was quite an accomplishment for a historically small niche car company.

It is understood that this model was a stop-gap measure prior to its facelift that took place in June of 2007 as a 2008 model year that also took place in Trollhättan, Sweden during the 2007 60th Anniversary Saab Festival.

This 2008 9-3 SportCombi, which was inspired by both the 9-3 Sport Hatch as well as the Aero-X concept cars, came out with all-wheel drive as an option.

The same year a high performance 9-3 Turbo-X SportCombi emerged with all-wheel drive (XWD), and today all 2009 Saab 9-3 SportCombis can come with XWD.

After, two concept cars, three production cars, we are finally going to see the long-awaited Saab 9-3 XC Cross-Combi, so here’s hoping it comes out soon as rumored and sells very well, it is about time!

For Immediate Release — September 15, 2008

Model Year 2009 Portfolio Overview and Pricing

SAAB EXTENDS XWD CROSS-WHEEL-DRIVE TO 9-3 2.0T MODELS

DETROIT — Saab begins the 2009 model year with attractive news for those seeking a vehicle that combines the enhanced functionality of cross-wheel-drive technology, Scandinavian design and an engaging, turbocharged driving experience.

Saab broadens the appeal of its 9-3 range – it’s most popular – for 2009 with available XWD cross-wheel-drive technology on 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models and a new 2.0T “Sport” model. Cross-wheel drive availability started in the 2008 model year with the V-6-equipped 9-3 Aero and the limited-edition Turbo X Sport Sedan and SportCombi.

“True to its Scandinavian origins, Saab has built a large part of its reputation on excellent road manners under difficult driving conditions like rain, sleet and snow,” said Steve Shannon, Saab Automobile USA general manager. “Our new cross-wheel-drive technology, which delivers unprecedented levels of driver involvement and dynamic chassis control, further illustrates Saab’s commitment to offering active safety in sporty, efficient and driver-focused vehicles.”

Saab’s XWD cross-wheel-drive is a pre-emptive, active-on-demand system that is activated only when required, limiting the impact on fuel economy while giving the car a surefooted, dynamic feel that enthusiasts embrace. It is available on all 9-3 models except the Convertible, which has a different floorpan that does not accommodate additional rear-wheel-drive components. The Saab 9-3 2.0T XWD Sport Sedan and SportCombi will come standard with additional equipment such as a winter package, moonroof and automatic transmission, while a 6-speed manual is also available.

The 2009 Saab lineup consists of the 9-3 range (2.0T and Aero Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible); the 9-5 range (2.3T and Aero Sport Sedan and SportCombi) and the 9-7X SUV range (4.2i, 5.3i and Aero).
The model-by-model snapshot of what’s new for 2009:
9-3 – Developed in Sweden with Haldex of Stockholm, Saab’s optional XWD cross-wheel-drive system, becoming available on 2009 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models, is designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability in all driving conditions.

This state-of-the-art, all-wheel drive system includes two innovative features: pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels to optimize traction at take-off; and an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) that allows variable torque transfer between the rear wheels. The eLSD is standard on Aero models; it is not available on 2.0T models.

Saab XWD is a fully automatic, on-demand system capable of sending up to 100 percent of engine torque to the front or rear wheels whenever necessary. While offering drivers sure-footed handling in low-grip conditions, its sophisticated operation also adds a further sporty dimension to the driving experience in all road conditions.

For 2009, Saab 9-3 “Sport” Sport Sedan buyers can choose an Aero-type appearance and performance package that includes dual bright finish tailpipes, sport bolstered seats, metallic interior decor, upgraded brakes, a sport-tuned chassis and new, sportier-looking 17 by 7.5-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Carbon Grey Metallic and Glass Grey Metallic are new exterior color choices for 2009. Grey also is offered as an additional convertible top color choice.

9-5 – The Saab 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi bring Scandinavian-inspired performance and luxury to the competitive midsize sport sedan segment. Available in both 2.3T and Aero models, they feature distinctive, aircraft-inspired design inside and out, in keeping with Saab’s roots in aviation.
The Saab 9-5 range includes the well-equipped 2.3T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models, as well as the uplevel and sportier Aero Sport Sedan and SportCombi models.

For 2009, the 9-5 range gets revised power window switches in the center console and new exterior colors, Carbon Grey Metallic and Glass Grey Metallic. Nocturne Blue Metallic is being reintroduced. Aero models receive a high-gloss black metallic interior finish and new 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels that complement the sportier look.

9-7X – Saab brings a Scandinavian flavor to the midsize SUV market with the 9-7X SUV range, which includes the performance-oriented 9-7X Aero, the 9-7X 4.2i and the 9-7X 5.3i. All feature unique Saab brand characteristics that include sophisticated styling inside and out, premium design features, and the sporty and spirited performance inherent to Saab vehicles.

Enhancements for 2009 Saab 9-7X models include new Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity that interfaces with the vehicles’ audio system, as well as two new exterior colors, Diamond Silver Metallic and Desert Tan Metallic.

Saab’s popular 9-7X Altitude Edition package also returns for 2009. It is offered for 4.2i and 5.3i models and includes DVD touch screen navigation radio and highly polished 18-inch alloy wheels and specific badging. Exterior finish choices include Carbon Flash (only non-Aero model for which this color is available) and Diamond Silver metallic.

Saab Automobile heritage
Following the end of World War II, the Swedish aircraft manufacturer Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (SAAB) faced an economic shift from the military-industrial complex to the consumer-based market. Looking to diversify, the primarily military aircraft manufacturer gave 16 aircraft engineers license to create the company’s first automobile.

On June 10, 1947, the automotive division of Saab was officially born, with the unveiling of the original Saab 92 production prototype to Swedish media. More than 4 million cars later, the spirit of Saab’s pioneering engineers lives on in an extensive product portfolio that is marketed in more than 50 countries around the globe.

Saab is a division of General Motors Corporation. Saab Automobile USA is the importer and/or distributor of the Saab 9-3, 9-5 and 9-7X for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. For the 2009 model year, Saab offers 7 different models that deliver 27 mpg or better according to EPA Highway fuel economy standards.
In addition to 4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper warranty, including roadside assistance and courtesy transportation, every new Saab comes with 3 years/36,000 miles no-charge scheduled maintenance plus standard Onstar and XM Satellite radio. Visit www.saabusa.com for more information.

Review: 2008 Saab 9-3 2.0T sedan

August28

Few true enthusiasts can deny having at least a small soft spot for Swedish automaker Saab in their hearts. It’s hard to ignore that Saab’s history is laced with the things that make an automaker great: A rally heritage thanks to Erik “On the Roof” Carlsson, a dedication to turbocharged performance and history of innovative – fine, quirky – design. With this in mind, we decided to take a look at the refreshed 2008 Saab 9-3 2.0T sedan to see if it continues to live up to this intriguing mystique despite the fact that it is the first vehicle to be developed under General Motors’ full ownership of the Swedish brand.

This just in from Saab Automobile, providing more information about the industry leading XWD Cross-Wheel Drive technology, now available in 2.0 Liter Engines. This means better fuel efficiency AND safety, in one incredible package.

I cannot wait to test drive this combination this winter season in New England during a nice snowstorm. It is time overdue. We all need to see this because as we have seen at the recent Turbo-X test drive event, we don’t doubt the performance, but we’re all waiting to see the real-life experience with the cross-wheel drive system.

Here is the full press release below:

2008-07-22

Model Year 2009 Saab 9-3 Range:

Class-leading Saab XWD With Signature 2.0-liter Turbo Power

Saab’s widely-acclaimed all-wheel-drive system – Saab XWD – is given a broader appeal in the latest 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi range by being teamed with classic Saab four-cylinder turbo power, in addition to the current 2.8V6 turbo application.

Featuring new generation, active control to bring the driver and car even closer together, the innovative XWD system now leverages the benefits of Saab’s smaller, 2.0-liter turbo engine. “This makes a very nimble handling package for the 9-3 range,” says Per Jansson, Vehicle Integration Engineer for Saab XWD.

“Saab is best known for using a relatively small four-cylinder turbo engine and our XWD system makes a perfect partner. Its compact and sophisticated design improves weight distribution, as well as handling and traction.”

Aligning signature Saab turbo power with XWD introduces a total traction choice for Linear and Vector, as well as Aero, variants of the latest 9-3 line-up. The XWD system also includes an optional, active rear limited-slip differential (eLSD), an innovation for this segment of the market.

The all-aluminum, four-cylinder engine delivers 210 hp (155 kW) at 5,300 rpm and impressive torque of 300 Nm between 2,500 – 4,000 rpm. A sports chassis set-up, with stiffer springs and dampers, larger brake discs and 18/19-inch alloy wheels, is a further option for XWD variants with this engine.

Saab XWD is an ‘intelligent’, active system that continuously distributes engine torque between the front and rear axles, giving optimum handling and grip in all driving conditions. On the open road, it operates seamlessly and helps the driver keep the car stable by splitting drive torque to counteract oversteer or understeer characteristics when cornering.

To optimize traction at take-off, Saab XWD also features an innovative, pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, this eliminates the need to detect front wheel slip before rear drive is activated.

This just in from Saab Automobile’s Global Communications channel. It appears that the Saab BioPower products, are now included in the Aero lineup which comes with XWD and eLSD. This has got to be the most incredible performance package short of the Saab 9-3 Turbo-X. I would be interested in seeing a detailed line by line comparitive.

Here is the press release below:

2008-07-22

Model Year 2009 range:

Saab BioPower Boost for top-of-the-line Aero Range

Celebrating Saab’s unique aircraft heritage, its Aero performance range is expanded for Model Year 2009 to include BioPower, as well as a turbo diesel and gasoline engine options.

Saab leads the automotive sector in exploiting the environmental benefits of bioethanol as a renewable fuel for its BioPower flex-fuel engines, which also deliver more power when running on E85 (85% bioethanol,15% gasoline). Now this technology is available for the first time in Aero specification for both 9-3 and 9-5 product ranges.

The new 9-3 Aero BioPower, in Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible formats, has a 2.0-liter turbo engine delivering 14% more maximum power (200 hp/ 147 kW.v 175 hp/ 129 kW) and 13% more torque (300 v 265 Nm) when running on E85. In the Sport Sedan, this gives zero to 100 kph acceleration in 7.9 sec and 80 to 120 kph in fifth gear in 10.0sec, compared to 8.5 and 11.1 sec, respectively, on gasoline.

In the 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi line-up, the 2.3-turbo engine of the new Aero BioPower delivers maximum power of 210 hp/154 kW and 310 Nm of torque when running on E85, compared to 185 hp/136 kW and 280 Nm on gasoline. On the road, this gives the sedan zero to 100 kph acceleration in 7.9 sec and 80-120 kph in fifth gear in 11.0 sec, compared to 8.3 sec and 12.6 sec, respectively, on gasoline.

Saab Aero models are distinguished by exterior sports bodystyling, unique alloy wheels and a sports chassis with stiffer springs and dampers for sharper handling. Inside, the sports seating is complemented by metallic-effect trim and the option of a unique leather/aluminum steering wheel.

For model year 2009, the full Saab 9-3 Aero line-up now offers a choice of front or all-wheel-drive (Saab XWD) combined with 280 hp, 2.8V6 or 210 hp, 2.0-liter four- cylinder turbo power. In addition, the new Aero BioPower and current 180 hp, 1.9TTiD engines come with front wheel drive only.
In the 9-5 range, the new BioPower option joins the current 260 hp, 2.3-liter gasoline version, which includes an overboost function delivering an impressive 370 Nm of torque.

Growing up around the Seacoast area, Saabs never seemed to get the respect and admiration from the press that one would see as befitting of such a magnificent marque. I would be so excited to see some press about a new Saab in the newspaper, only to be disappointed by buzzwords like “quirky” or “torque steer”. Over time, I became jaded and just stopped reading the automotive section all together.

So the other morning, Ryan was by my place for a quick visit and saw the Portsmouth Herald on my kitchen table. Well sure enough, there was the picture you see above with a great article by Gerry Miles, a local correspondent for Seacoast Media Group. Gerry, a Saab enthusiast in his own right, had this to say in a quick email to Saab History about his own Saab history:

“…I’ve owned 2 Saabs, a 900S 4-door and 900S hatchback. I miss them both, notchy gearbox and all. The 900s Hatch lost its drivers window during a winter storm on a trip to LL Bean and the passengers in the back got buffeted with brisk air. We borrowed some cardboard in Maine and blocked the driver’s window. The local dealership laughed like hell when I told him how I went to put the window down at the York Toll’s and the window stuck and then twisted on an angle and sank slowly before I could grab it. I appreciated the heated seat like heck then!”

And now, without further ado, here is Gerry’s take on the tantalizing Turbo-X:

Turbo X goes back in time to Saab’s future: “Black is back”

ANDOVER, Mass. – In a nod to the past with a keen eye on the present, Saab Cars USA showed off its latest, and greatest, way to fight the snow since they standardized heated front seats here last week with a national press introduction.

Cross Wheel Drive, or XWD for acronym aficionados, is the best adaptation of front and all-wheel-drive in a tidy package produced for the limited edition retro version of the old Saab s now found in the a retro version of the classic black 1985 Saab 900 SPG. Saab, which made its international intro of the vehicle last fall at the New England International Auto Show in Boston , returned to the northeast because 40 percent of its stateside sales are derived from the six-state region and the firm was headquartered in Orange , Conn. , for 37 years.

Saab historical fans may know, or know of former CEO Ralph Millet displaying the first Saab at the New York Auto Show where the car was meant only to generate interest as a static display. It drew so much interest than when a man pressed him on the price, he hesitated, walked away for a bit, came back with a price and thus the first Saab was sold in the USA .

Imagine a new 9-3, swathed in deep rich black paint and matching black interior – like the black 99 and 900 Turbos – and you’ll find the retro turbo boost gauge on the right side of the instrument panel, in its white/yellow/red curved stripe, all the better to show how much of the 295 foot-pounds of torque at 2,150 rpm are churning through the turbo-powered four-cylinder mill to generate a peak of 280 horsepower from the 2.8-liter V-6 engine.

Sitting behind the wheel of the fastest Saab ever produced – yes, it’s quicker than the torque-steer ridden Viggen that wore out tires and nerves wrestling the steering wheel – zooming up to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, it’s every bit a Saab, swift and sedate.

Driving up to the test site from Boston , we zipped through Storrow Drive , up the Big Dig ramps and onto 93 North where the expansion joints every 25 yards or so gave the suspension a real world test that even a marketing guru had not experienced but likened to the cement roads of Detroit . It was there that we surmised the Turbo X, which crossed the suspension joints but didn’t jar our fillings loose, had passed its first real world suspension test.

At the test site, we discovered just how good the car was – especially for its given mission – staying planted in slippery conditions.

With sand spread on a parking lot, I first pushed the automatic Turbo X through a slalom and then hammered the apex of a corner, trying to push the rear end out of control. No dice.

Just when the sand flew and the back end started to feel a tad light and slide, with my foot still on the gas, the X corrected and moved out towards the next set of cones.

The magic comes from a proprietary fourth generation Haldex unit that mates to either the auto or 6-speed manual transmission. What happens next is an alphabet soup of techno wizardry but it works all the time and at high speeds in dry-land zipping through cones or repeated passes through the sand in the apex of the sweeper.

First, consider that XWD can send up to 100 percent of the power to either the front or rear wheels if needed. Under normal conditions, expect no more than 10 percent to be sent to the rear wheels. Then, consider that the cross-over features allows up to 40 percent of the torque to switch to the rear wheel with the most grip.

“If you had two front wheels on ice, say, and one in wet snow and one wheel on gravel or something with better grip than the other three,” described Saab engineer Tommy Sundin, “this XWD would get you out. It’s as simple as that.”

What sounds simple is really a neat interaction of new systems. Chiefly there’s a version of electronic limited slip differential called eLSD. It also works in dry or wet weather to help cross deeper than expected puddles or with cornering aggressively.

How it works

When you select a gear, the PTU (Power Take-off Unit), which transmits power through the prop shaft to the rear axle and the RDM (Rear Drive Module, which includes a TTD (Torque Transfer Device) and the eLSD (electronic limited slip differential).

At the gear selection, the systems synergize whereas previous systems needed to detect any wheel slippage before engaging the backside. This also means one will no longer find the snowflake symbol atop the auto gear shift. Pressing this button on past models in winter started the vehicle in third gear to prevent wheel slip at takeoff.
Underway, the TTD , RDM and eLSD “talk” back and forth – literally – depending upon traction or lack thereof for sure-footed driving.

Torque between the axles is handled by the TTD, depending upon “slip.” The RDM and eLSD perform similar functions by laterally and in concert with the ABS/ESP programs that monitor yaw ratio, steering angle, speed and other factors.

Retro-fit

Sundin explained that getting the systems to fit underneath, without becoming bulky was a trick that was mastered. Just six tiny brackets were needed to hang the Haldex. The gas tank was modified, but is still a one-piece unit with a sending unit to keep pressure taut and steady.

The rear suspension got reworked and has a self-leveling feature Sundin said was necessary, as is a big anti-roll bar.

Why they did it

Saab, according to marketing guru Roger McCormack, is hoping to become more of a premium niche player and a graphic showed that it’s all new money for parent firm General Motors. Saab released a starting price last fall of $ 42,510; the SportCombi wagon is priced at $43,310 according to trollhattensaab.net.

The move to all-wheel-drive, along with most of the premium import segment, was a natural, especially after the failed experiment with the 9-2X Saab-aru variant from Subaru.

Of the 2,000 Turbo X’s produced, a limited number that may well establish it as a “Classic Cult Car” too, but 600 are to be sold stateside and it’s estimated that half of that allotment is already sold.
As the only premium European brand in the GM family, XWD gives Saab another quiver in its all-weather versatility perception and reality. XWD will migrate to the 9.3 2.0t and the 9.3 Aero this fall and the rest of the Swedish portfolio, including the 9.4 that was shown off in Detroit this winter.

Exclusivity

The Saab Turbo X will be limited to 2,000 production units worldwide. Known market allocations are as follows:
US – 600 units
UK – 500 units
SWEDEN – 175 units
