Saab Automobile Debuts 25th Anniversary Convertible

Posted on 13. Nov, 2008 by .

Saab Automobile USA are releasing a “25th Special 9-3 Convertible” which will be showing at the Los Angeles Auto Show that begins on November 22nd.

This edition, as I suspected is only for the United States, because back in September Saab Automobile released an almost identical version called the “Air Edition” for Europe, although that version had multiple engine options along with uniform aluminum colored Turbo-X wheels.

This “25th Anniversary” edition is interesting, because although technically it has been 25 years since the 900 Cabriolet Prototype hit the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1983, however Saab Automobile released a Saab 9-3 Convertible “20th Anniversary” edition back in 2006, two years ago, not 5.

I do want to use this an opportunity to thank former President of Saab-Scania of America, Bob Sinclair for the idea of the convertible and pitching it to Sten Wennlo back in 1983, and getting the prototypes built by ASC (American Sunroof Company) here in the United States. I also want to thank Saab Automobile USA for recognizing this during the 20th anniversary of the convertible in 2006 by having a media event in Southern California showing appreciation to Bob Sinclair.

The press release is below, and as you can see there is only one engine option for this U.S. edition unlike Europe, and omitting the Turbo-X wheels, but instead including an abundant set of wheels from inventory that debuted a whole three years ago. Why is it that Saab Automobile continue to waste time and energy on something like this, where an anniversary edition was already done 2 years and with much better execution I must say.

While the Saab 9-3 Convertible in its present form is a good car, this special edition is redundant and in my opinion undermines the 20th edition Saab 9-3 convertible launch back in 2006. The least they could have done, as one commenter on Motortrend suggested: “Outfit the converitble with a burgundy leather interior and white exterior paint job if they were serious about making it a true historical “anniversary edition” successor.”

I suggest you read what others are also saying on Motortrend and Autoblog.

For Immediate Release — November 12, 2008

American debut at Los Angeles auto show
Saab Celebrates 25 years of Convertibles with Special Edition
DETROIT – The first ever Saab Convertible made its world debut at the Frankfurt auto show in the fall of 1983. Now, 25 years later, a Special Edition makes its American debut at the Los Angeles International auto show which opens to the public on November 22. This new version of the Saab 9-3 Convertible will be showcased in a unique bright champagne metallic color.
Saab surprised the automotive world when it pioneered the concept of a ‘four season, four-seat’ soft top Convertible. Designed to be practical and stylish, the Scandinavian-styled convertible changed the perception of open top vehicles to be used all the year round.

“Saab has sold more than a quarter of a million convertibles worldwide and this latest edition highlights the timeless design and responsible performance that Saab convertibles have always represented,” said Steve Shannon, executive director, marketing and product, Saab Automobile USA.
The special edition Saab Convertible will be available in three metallic colors to include Jet Black, Carbon Grey and the new Bright Champagne. It will feature Saab’s signature 2.0-liter, 210 hp four cylinder engine and can be matched to six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmissions.
Special content includes influences from the Turbo X performance model, such as the design of the front bumper and steering wheel plus carbon fiber interior finishes and black floor mats with grey binding. Like the Aero version, the rear shows dual exhaust pipes and an anthracite grey bumper insert. Five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels will be standard.
Expected to arrive in dealer showrooms in January 2009, the Saab 9-3 2.0T Special Edition Convertible will be priced starting at $ 46,725 including destination charges.

Saab 9-3 XWD Billboard Ad On Interstate 93 Boston, MA

En-route to Shaw Saab in Norwell, Massachusetts I could not ignore a fairly obvious Saab 93 XWD ad on a billboard while ironically driving on the Southbound lane of Interstate 93 within the Boston, Massachusetts limits.

This past November Boston, Massachusetts was the location for the North American launch of the XWD halo vehicle for the Saab brand, the Saab 9-3 Turbo-X.93-copy.jpg I was there as a guest of Saab Automobile USA, and thanks to Saab of Hunterdon & JMK Saab, I had the opportunity to film the event for us to enjoy!

This ad is only placed for South bound traffic as they leave Boston, and apparently the cost for the North bound lane to Boston is approximately twice the price!

2008 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan Spotted on “The Office”

Approximately 1 year ago this month, I spotted a Saab 9-2x on the television series “The Office” here in the United States.

It seems that since that time, Jim on the series has upgraded his Saab 9-2x to a titanium grey 2008 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan as shown at the end of the season opener last Thursday.

In this scene, Jim arrives in style at a fuel station (looks like the ones I normally see in Connecticut) to meet up with Pam to propose to her.

Way to go Jim for maintaining your appreciation & enthusiam for the Saab Automobile, perhaps we will see more of your new ride tonight or later this season?

Saab Automobile To Return To Racing In 2009

Posted on 27. Sep, 2008 by .

I almost had heart failure as I heard this news as of late…

According to the Touring Car Times., Saab Automobile is officially returning to racing in 2009 beginning with the Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC) with a red 2009 Saab 9-3 BioPower Sport Sedan.

The STCC began in 1996 and has never involved a Saab in the championship, so here’s some optimism for their involvement next year.

race1.jpg For the record, it was 1980 when Saab Automobile was officially engaged in racing, rallying & touring. However, since then, they have been funding private parties racing ever since, so let’s not forget about that. These activities included at least most recently, the Pikes Peak events in 1997, 2000 and again in 2002, the Michelin Race of Champions in 2000 and even the Saab Pearl team run in North America in 2006!

We have also had a number of Saab rally drivers over the years, most notably Erik “On the Roof” Carlsson, Stig Blomqvist, Per Eklund, Simo Lampinen and others.

Today, we have a growing younger audience and need a new face to racing for Saab Automobile, if this engagement in STCC and other events will be the first official return to racing since 1980.

If you recall from my recent interview with the former head of marketing and PR at the Saab Car Division of Saab-Scania, Sten Wennlo, Erik Carlsson was asked by him to race and be involved in the PR department. This took place back in the early days of SAAB, in order to appeal to getting younger drivers behind the wheel of the 96, and it worked
It looks like our new driver may be Jens Edman, which is good because he’s experienced yet young enough to once again help bring younger drivers to the Saab brand!

I’ve recently e-mailed Saab Automobile’s motorsport manager, Bjorn Berglof, but his e-mail has bounced, so I have responded by e-mailing Saab Automobile Sweden’s Communications department to see if they have some more material and insight into Saab Automobile formally competing in this race.

I am excited to see this car as you will read below, it is already being tested at Saab Automobile’s test track behind the Saab Factory in Trollhättan, the same one where the 9-X Air concept was driven recently.

Here is the press release by Touring Car Times:

By Johan Meissner Thursday, 25 September 2008 11:49 CET

The new manufacturer for the Swedish Touring Car Championship has been revealed: Saab.

A brand new Saab 93 BioPower has been build in S2000 specification by the team Dealer Sport. STCC race winner Jens Edman completed a shakedown of the car two days ago at Saab’s test track in Trollhättan, Sweden.

Edman was more than pleased with the first run of the new Saab and hopes to be back in the STCC next year.

“It was a perfect day, we had absolutely no problems at all with the car. We only did 15 laps, but the car felt great,” said Edman to

Team boss and team owner Jan Warnestad was equally pleased with the first outing of the new S2000 Saab.

“We are more than pleased with the new STCC Saab! We think the car will be a strong competitor in the STCC-field, especially thanks to Saab’s strong position in the BioPower-area,” said Warnestad.

The team Dealer Sport, previously named Opel Team Sweden, ran an Opel Astra for Tommy Rustad in STCC 2007, but pulled out from the series ahead of the 2008 season. Edman was negotiating with the team ahead of the 2008 season, but if Edman will be behind the wheel of the car next year remains to be seen.

“We are discussing things for next year at the moment. It would have been really nice to be back in the STCC, I have been in Denmark for six years now. The STCC has grown really strong and I hope to be back for 2009,” said Edman.

Saab has backed the team during the building of the first S2000 Saab. Bt the level of official involvement from Saab in the team next year is unknown so far.

The engine of the car is Saab’s four cylinder, two liter engine and will be run on bio-ethanol. The gearbox is a six-speed sequential from Xtrac, the same one the team used in the Opel Astra.

The car will complete a test run during the final race of the STCC at Mantorp Park this weekend. Stay tuned for a video and more pictures of the car!
