The Saab Club of Israel has just celebrated their silver anniversary, marking 25 years since their club was formed. To this day, there is only one importer of Saab Automobiles in their country.

Here is the press piece I recently received along with a link to photos that they took of their gathering, complete with a whole lineage of vintage SAABs to more modern Saabs!

I have not been able to locate their official club website, so in lieu of that, I will post their fotki photo page and create their own new section titled “Saab Clubs In the Middle East”.

The Israel SAAB Club celebrated its’ Silver Anniversary yesterday in a trip to the northern part of Israel. The club was formed at the end of 1983, at times when Saab had no importer in Israel. These days there is an importer, but only 1 (one !!! and this is not a joke) new SAAB car was imported to israel during 2008. there are around 950 SAABs in the country, of them more than 100 are in areas that suffer Hammas Terrorists’ missle attacks these days.

The Pacific North West Saab Owners Club in the United States has recently held a club outing at a wind turbine farm.

I find this venue quite interesting given that Saab used to manufacture wind turbines back in 1975 and as recent as 2003, Saab had their global launch of the 9-3 Sport Sedan through a shoot in the Canary Islands that had a scientific facility complete with wind turbines!

This particular location that they visited is Washington State’s largest wind farm appropriately located on top of a hillside in Ellensburg which has 127 turbines. A far cry from the old Saab-Scania turbine, these turbines pump out 230 Megawatts powering approximately 70,000 homes!

What a interesting idea for a Saab Club visit and what a place to take photos, surreal!

The International Saab Club Meeting took place this past weekend in the Cesis district in Latvia on August 7th-9th 2008.

The Saab Club of Latvia did an incredible job in advertising the meeting during last year’s 60th Anniversary Saab Festival in Sweden from the 7th through the 10th of June, 2007. From a huge distribution of flyers at the Saab Festival Dinner, to a website launch, as well as proper signage displayed on a number of Saab Club of Latvia cars, namely the Saab 9-5 pictured here, their presence was certainly known and their anticipating of the meeting, quite remarkeable.

Here is a brief quote from their website:

Dear SAAB friends,

We invite all SAAB enthusiasts from around the world to take part in the 26th International SAAB Club Meeting, on 8,9, and 10 August 2008, in the Cesis district of Latvia.

This year is very important for us because the Latvian SAAB Club has its 10th Anniversary.

Our main idea is to meet SAAB friends in a large camping place where all SAAB enthusiasts can spend an interesting and rewarding time together.

And, as we see SAAB cars not only as a cult objects, but also as cars for active people, the meeting will be at the camping place Mezrozes, Cesu district. Mezrozes is situated 100 km north-east from the capital Riga and 15 km from the town Cesis.

Cesis is the town with more than a 800-year-old history, picturesque landscape and numerous cultural activities.

Preliminary Program:

Friday, August 8, 2008
Morning: Meeting and check-in at the Mezrozes camping.
Afternoon: Check–in and a sightseeing route.
Evening: Official opening of the “26th International SAAB Club Meeting 2008” and a Grill Party.

Saturday, August 9, 2008
Morning: International SAAB Rally 2008, a tour with special tasks but without complicated orienteering (for locals, of course ).
Afternoon: You may still be on the tour, maybe not
Voting for the SAAB Beauty contest.
Evening: Buffet Diner with entertainment. Prizes and Special Prizes. Saturday night SAAB Disco. Sauna, smoke sauna, lake, pool.

Sunday, August 10, 2008
Late morning: Late breakfast.
SAAB market.
SAAB Beauty Contest award ceremony.
Afternoon: Closing of the Meeting.

One weekend for us is too short a time to meet SAAB friends again and show our hospitality. Yes, we want to show you more!

So the Latvian SAAB club invite you to join other SAAB friends during 3-day event before International Meeting 2008 when we want to show you just a little part of the nice place called Latvia and spend time together with other SAAB enthusiasts.

For more information on this event, please visit their website directly at www.intsaab2008.com

The Vintage Saab Club of North America will be having a meeting on July 12th in New York. They are encouraging not only other members from other clubs, but enthusiasts and owners to attend as well! It sounds like a great time, read below!

VSCNA Meeting Notice

The next meeting of the Vintage Saab Club of North America will be held on July 12th 2008 at the home of Bruce and Lori Turk in Walden, NY, rain or shine. This will be a social gathering of like-minded individuals where we will discuss pressing issues such as, but not limited to, when the hamburgers are ready to come off the grill.

New for this years picnic is an indoor banquet facility (A.K.A. “The new barn”) that can easily accommodate all of us in the case of inclement weather. The picnic will start at 11:00am with lunch around 12:30pm. Early arrivals are always welcome if you don’t mind helping to set up!

The Turk’s will provide unlimited parking “on the green” for all make and model cars, a gas BBQ for your cooking pleasure, paper plates, utensils, cups, condiments, soda, macaroni salad, tossed salad and fruit salad. You will bring your own food, beverages and folding chairs.

The V.S.C.N.A. will hold its annual election of officers at the picnic. Only members in good standing will be allowed to vote.

Please sign up in advance so we know how many people are coming. Use his link to sign up: http://www.nysoc. com/cgi-bin/signup/index.cgi

We are also inviting the members of the New York Saab Owners Club (NYSOC) http://www.nysoc.com/ and Adirondack Motor Enthusiasts Club (AMEC) http://www.icerace.com/ and New England Saab Association (NESA) http://nesaab.org/site/ to join us. Inviting additional clubs insures a large turnout and that’s what we want, the more the
merrier. As always, you do not need to be a member of the VSCNA to participate in one of our events. Everyone is invited, all makes and
model cars are welcome. We do ask that non-VSCNA members make a $5.00 per person donation to our club; a donation jar will be on site.

Directions to the Turk house:

From Route 87 (New York State Thruway) Take exit 17 (Newburgh) Follow sign after toll to route 17K. Make
right at traffic light on to 17K West. Go 3.2 miles on 17K West to traffic light. Make a right at light on to Rock Cut Road (Cumberland Farms gas station on corner). See “Directions from Rock Cut road”.

From Route 84 Take exit 6 (Montgomery- Newburgh) Get on 17K West. Take 17K West 1/2 mile to traffic light. Make a right at light on to Rock Cut road (Cumberland Farms gas station on corner). See “Directions from Rock Cut Road”.

Directions from Rock Cut road. Take Rock Cut Road for one mile to traffic light. Make a left at light toward Walden. Go 1 mile and make a right on Saint Andrews Road. Go .9 miles on Saint Andrews Road; The Turk home is on the left. There is a telephone pole on the left at the end of their driveway. The number 333 is nailed to the telephone pole, which is hidden behind a big tree so go SLOW.

The Rocky Mountain Saab Club in Colorado, the club that is working hard in preparing the 2009 Saab Owners Convention next year, has recently enjoyed a “Saab Club Ski Day” for their members.

It looks like they had a great time there, showing some beautiful Saabs as well!

Here is the writeup by RMSC member Charles Stoyer in his own words from their latest April newsletter.

It was Tuesday, 18 March 2008 and the designated RMSC ski day. Tom and I both had our concerns. Tom’s concern was than no one would show up and it would be just the two of us, one of the 20-odd RMSC ski days we have had this season. My worst fear was that we would end up skiing blue cruisers all day. Both fears were unfounded.

We did manage to get one additional person to join us, Rob Martinson of Evergreen. He did not bring a SAAB to meet us at the Floyd Hill P&R, but he does own a steel-gray ‘02 Viggen 5-door and an ‘86 900 Turbo SPG. While we were getting our boots on in the Mary Jane Parking Lot, John Hill of Boulder parked behind us with a steel gray Viggen ragtop which semi matches Robs.We introduced ourselves, invited him to ski with us and suggested he get in our picture. He did, and he has now joined RMSC! John was previously a member of the Boulder Saab Club.

Well, John (a former member of the CU FreestyleTeam, and ex ski racer) was the best skier among us and yours truly was the worst, but even then we had no need for blue cruisers and spent the day skiing tree and black bump runs. John snuck off for an extreme run at the end of the day but we did meet back up with him in the parking lot for one final photo showing both my red ‘92 9000 T and his ‘02 9-3 Viggen ragtop.

Lunchtime on the patio next to the Club Car at Mary Jane. L-R: Charles Stoyer, Tom Nelson, Rob Martinson and John Hill.

We hope to see more of you next year, even if we do have to ski blue cruisers! 3, fortunately,

The New Jersey Saab Owners Club (NJSOC) was originally started by a longtime Saab enthusiast by the name of Larry West in 1987, 21 years ago.

I recall going to a few of the NJSOC technical sessions that were arranged by this club and hosted with John Moss at the former Saab Cars USA Technical Training facility in Wallingford, Connecticut in 2001 that GM subsequently closed in April of 2005. I believe that sometime after 2001, the New Jersey Saab Owners Club was disbanded.

If you are a Saab Owner or enthusiast in and around New Jersey and can make it to the next meeting, check it out and let me know how it went!

Here is a piece about the club’s new launch:

The Jersey Saab Club is all about the Saab owner pride in the Delaware Valley.

The South Jersey / Philadelphia area has some of the best Saab’s in the country. In the past we have not had representation in the Saab owners Club of North America annual meetings and we would like to show that this area definately has a lot of Saab pride.

This isn’t going to be easy but with your help and love for the brand we can show the rest of the country the wonderful cars our areas has.

Our Meetings are in South Jersey. South Jersey is most defined as Trenton down to Cape May. Don’t worry if you are from North of Trenton you can still participate in the club our meetings and outings will be held south of Trenton.

This club is committed to all Saab’s. Old and New. We encourage recent Saab owners as well as “old heads” to join the club and socialize and network.

Please visit their website directly here: http://jerseysaabclub.com

The photo above was taken in May of 2001 and showcases the vehicles of the original New England Saab Association organizers. The 9000 on the far left (black) was a passer by, who surprisingly was Swedish and his grandfather was a past Saab President in Sweden, surprisingly enough. It is important to know that this photograph represented our “photo opportunity”, however the meeting took place elsewhere.

If you plan on going, please get a photograph in a similiar fashion of all of the Saabs lined up, nose out for a THEN & NOW photo collage for the record. It’ll be really nice to see how many people who show up and support the relaunching of the club to those that were unable to make it to due to prior committments or logistics.

I have just received a very nice writeup about the Saab Club of Canada, here it is in their own words:

We do have a web site and a fairly active forum. Our club is one of the older ones around, certainly the oldest in Canada having been around since 1978. One other thing to note … our club has been running Enhanced Driving Schools (for anyone who wants to attend, not just Saabs) for almost 20 years.

Our last school was October 5, 2007 and was attended by 11 Saabs, the most ever! Have a look at our web site for photos of the event, including the Saab group photo at the end of the day … and notice that the JL Racing Saab is there (John Lockhart, the owner, is actually my neighbour too – small world!!!).

Our membership has grown almost 30% in the last 18 months. I attribute this to the work of our membership as well as the quality of products Saab has been producing. As a matter of fact, the largest dealer in Canada has just invited the club to not only attend, but to participate in their 2008 9-3 launch coming up in a couple of weeks.

In addition to that, our club has very close ties with the head of Saab Canada, particularly the last head (who just finished his stint in August) and have made very good progress with his replacement. One very interesting comment from Marten is that he doesn’t believe any other club in the world works as closely with Saab as our club does (and this from the new guy!!!).

The President of the <a href=": Saab Car Club of Australia of a club that represents 5 branches spanning the entire Australia region, those being Victoria, NSW, WA, Tasmania and Queensland, has recently contacted me with a really interesting proposal:

Here is his proposal in his own words:

This a great site and shows the SAAB owners geographical location, the value of the 80 clubs members cars must be in the $$ U.S. millions. This also raises the opportunity for the international SAAB clubs to form a network of international SAAB owner clubs , which would possibly be one of the larger car clubs and could be a strong influence on GM as to what is happening with the SAAB brand and models.

Thousands of global SAAB car owners in the international clubs who are truly passionate and proud about their SAABS can carry a message of brand loyalty to SAAB.

This was really kind of the president to provide this idea and moreover, to allow me to share this idea directly here on Saab history.

I think this idea is important to consider having some sort of network for all of these 80 Saab Clubs in over 40 countries to communicate regarding key areas of importance that transcend across all of our geographic locations.

If you are reading this, what are your thoughts? Please post them in the comments section of this posting.

This auto show took place this past weekend from the 9th until the 11th of November.

This display is quite impressive and really puts the Saab Club of France high on the list for putting this altogether. From the photos, you could tell how much level of detail they included in their display with everything from scale model cars in glass cases to product literature including actual Turbochargers and intercoolers along with their respective technical brochures.

I’m willing to bet that that anyone visiting their display would have left with a real sense of why Saab has one of the largest followings of enthusiasts in the automobile industry. I hope that a lot of new members joined the club!

A Saab Club, commonly known as a community that consists of Saab owners and enthusiasts have gathered to drive, socialize and learn about Saabs in a fun and welcoming environment, have been around for years in various capacities.

Today, due to the growing volume of Saabs that have been produced, communication of activities due to the maturity of the internet, and a few other factors, the owner and enthusiast base for the Saab automobile is at its highest level ever and the total number clubs representing these individuals is now at 80 clubs worldwide.

From the Saab Festivals, Saab Conventions to other various events and activities that take place monthly in just about every continent on the globe, year after year, these tireless unpaid volunteers who come together in the spirit of Saab, enjoy what they do, but it’s about time that we thank the international Saab clubs wherever you may be for all of the hard work you continue to do.

Without these clubs, I truly believe that the body of knowledge, mentorship, events, activities, archival material ranging from written, photographic as well as audio and video would not be in existence today. I also believe that these tireless promotors of all things Saab, who choose to make the sacrifices with their families for the sake of everything Saab, all the time, are owed a debt of gratitude and for this I respectfully thank you for the work you have done and continue to do. Your work has made a significant impact worldwide in terms of promoting, advertising and keeping the Saab brand alive for generations to come. These contributions set the competition far behind and it is no wonder that the Saab owners are “the most desireable customers a company could ever wish for”!

I want to wish each and club the best and believe that running a club today unlike your earlier counterparts, you have more tools at your disposal in which to promote and communicate your activities to a greater audience more than before. This is a great time to be part of a Saab club!

As a resource for potential new members consisting of new or existing Saab owners and enthusiasts, I have provided a complete listing below of all of the 80 Saab Clubs worldwide. This list will also be accessible on every page of the site on the right-hand column as well, for easy accessibility. If I have missed anything or you see changes that should be made, please contact me immediately so that I can make the necessary modifications. I have also created a Saabs Club section for any and all postings pertaining to Saab Clubs to reside. Please visit this section directly here.

Happy Saabing and keeping the Saab spirit alive in over 40 countries worldwide!

The New England Saab Association that I founded back in 1997, and officially launched with the help of others in 2000 has recently revamped their website.

The Club’s founder, Seth Hedstrom from Maine whom I met recently at the Saabs @ Carlisle 2007 event has taken over the club and has a number of other new faces supporting the cause. Here is their announcement.

Here is their press release:

Welcome to the New England Saab Association

Welcome to the new homepage of NESA! This group of Saab enthusiasts has seen
many changes since its original conception in 1997, but one thing stays the
same: It has always been a group of people held together by the common
enthusiasm for the Saab brand–And don’t expect that to change soon!

We have had big dreams for the Club since our initial involvement, and this
website you see here is a huge milestone. All along we knew that a central
source of information was crucial to bring together people covering such a
large area. Understanding a website was the only way to do this, we focused
all of our efforts on this goal. What we have here couldn’t have been
attained on our own and we are very grateful to those who have contributed
their time and resources so far. We are very excited about the future of
NESA, and we hope that you will check back often to come along for the ride!

To visit their website, go to www.nesaab.org

On Sunday, July 8th, 2007 Cameron & Ed Lorenz held the tenth anniversary Saab Owner picnic at their home in Oneonta, New York. There were many in attendance including the former veteran Saab training czar, John Moss as well as many others who traveled in some cases quite some distances to attend. The variety of SAAB models were plentiful and it appears that everyone had a great time overall.

Here is some coverage of the event from Ed Lorenz, as well as some photographs by Thor Carlson, enjoy.

who attended!

Also, thank you to wife Cameron and son Riley for their assistance with

Thank you to Bob Abels, for donating a box of service manuals and other
literature, that was auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Vintage Saab Club of
North America.

Thank you to John Moss for being the auctioneer. Thanks to Mike St. Pierre and Bruce Turk for their help. In a quick recap, “People’s Choice” went to Bob Abels and his ’64 GT-850. “Almost People’s Choice” went to Frank Allocco and his ’72 95. This donation signifies the conclusion of the first phase of of the “Saab Film Project” that began back in the fall of 2006 when a number of 16mm reels were donated by John Moss, former employee of Saab Cars USA, followed by a number of additional films also provided by Dan Prescott, former PR rep of Saab Cars, USA, Inc. The second phase of this project will commence later this summer when I will be taking on a number of yet to be identified films by another former Saab Cars, USA employee.

The Rocky Mountain Saab Club or RMSC is an active club that is open to any and all Saab Owners and Enthusiasts in and around the “Denver, Boulder and Front Range Areas” of Colorado, USA. This donation follows their last donation back on April 10th.

The RMSC holds a number of annual events that range from technical workshops, repair and maintenance demonstrations to car shows and even dinners and picnics. In in addition this activitity, the RMSC has been starting a number of restoration projects, most notable the recently completed “Project Laura” 1970 SAAB 96 that I have featured previously. Their latest restoration project is known as “Red Bull” which is a 1961 SAAB model 96 two-stroke.

As mentioned previously, I will be providing information about what may be arguably the clubs largest project, the 2009 Saab Owners Convention. I will be providing updates as they come for everyone about this event.

For more information about the RMSC, please visit their website directly http://www.rockymtnsaabclub.com

A tremendous thank you once again to Bruce Harbison, Tom Nelson, Jerry Danner and the rest of the the Rocky Mountain Saab Club for believing in the content that is provided on Saab History for the Saab Community to enjoy and cherish for years to come. It is clear that the RMSC truly embodies Saab Enthusiasm at all levels. Thank you for your support and we’ll see you in Trollhättan, Sweden to share in the celebration of Saab Automobile’s 60th anniversary at the Saab Festival

The New York Saab Owners Club (NYSOC) is hosting their annual winery tour again this June 30th, 2007. Here is some information about this interesting event below, so mark your calendars if can make it.

This year, the winery tour will be taking place in Dutchess County, NY. We will be hitting all three wineries along the Dutchess Wine trail.

We will begin the day in the parking lot of Sky Acres Airport in LaGrangeville, NY (click here for directions). If you would like to eat some lunch, they have a small diner on-site. We will be leaving the airport promptly at 12 Noon, so please be there early.

Our first winery stop will be Millbrook Vineyards. After Millbrook, we will head to Alison Wines. From there, we will end the run at Clinton Vineyards.

The tour is scheduled to take all day and you are invited to join us for dinner at the Hyde Park Brewing Company in Hyde Park, NY. While a table has been arranged for us, their entire menu will be available for you to choose from, so you will be responsible for your own portion of the bill.

The total driving time for the tour is about 3-4 hours. Please be sure to have a full tank of fuel prior to arriving at the airport in the morning. There are some parts of this drive that are either poorly paved or unpaved (dirt), but this is only about 1% of the total drive. We will be driving very cautiously along these portions since they are unavoidable. This shouldn’t pose a problem to anyone, but it is best to let you know beforehand.

For more information about this event, please visit the NYSOC website here.

On Saturday, May 19th, 2007 I managed to visit the Saabs @ Carlisle 2007 event in beautiful Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the “State of Independence”. I arrived at the event in the morning and was immediately impressed by the picturesque day that I was presented with. This event was absolutely incredible with the bright blue skies and plenty of sun throughout the day that lent itself to a beautiful presentation of well over two hundred Saab models exhibited by the Saab owners and enthusiasts from all over the North East and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

This event was centered around the incredible Saab Automobile USA Heritage collection that was in full display that consisted of the 1952 92, 1960 93F GT750, 1956 Sonett I 94, 1960 96 RAC Rally car, 1966 96 Monte Carlo 850, 1966 Quantum IV, 1967 Sonett II, 1970 Sonett III, 1970 99, 1978 99, 1986 900 Convertible, 1987 9000 “Talladega”, 1987-1991 Skip Barber Race Car, 1990 900 SPG, 1995 900 “Pikes Peak”, 1997 900 “Talladega”, 2005 9-2X Aero and the 2006 9-3 Aero Convertible.

This event is the premiere event for the Central Pennsylvania Saab Club that annually manages “Saabs @ Carlisle” and I must say it was well organized, with particular acknowledgement of the prerequisite for the lunch engagement whereby all registered entrants were required to vote for the best Saab in each of the categories shown in the photography below. As the winners were announced as everyone gathered inside of the Saab USA Heritage Collection tent, there was a tremendous amount of applause given to not only those that brought their car in for judging, but for the team at GM Heritage Center that kindly spent their time in transporting as well as fully restoring and/or preserving each and every SAAB in the collection. I understand that there will be some additions to this collection that will be showing up in the next year, so keep your eye out for them.

Circumnavigating the Highways, Streets, Roads and other appropriately titled venues in the Saab section at Carlisle proved to be an exhiliarating adventure for an enthusiastic photographer as I hope you can see in the photos I have provided below. It is clear that the the “SAAB” presence far outweighed all other marques on the lawn that day the sheer square footage that was designated for Saabs @ Carlisle.

The last area that I visited at Carlisle before my visit came to an end were the vendor spaces that included those specifically selling a plethora of SAAB parts, accessories, product literature & toys. There were some wonderful finds at each of these vendor spots that I be providing more information on in the near future.

Throughout the event, the photography, voting, and all other activities were great, however the memorable dialog I had the opportunity to have with friends and colleagues was probably the highlight of the event.

I hope that this summary captures some of the major Saab highlights as well as the other key aspects of the Saabs @ Carlisle event this past Saturday, May 19th, 2007.

This event was my first that I have made it to which certainly won’t be my last. Enjoy the photography.

The Central Pennsylvania Saab Club has just provided an update to the Saabs @ Carlisle 2007 event that will be taking place next Friday the 18th, Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of May in Carlisle, Pennsvlvania. It is incredible just how many people have signed up so far and the numbers are expected to exceed 200 registrations for vehicles in the coming weeks. Here is their update below in their own words: See you at Carlisle!

Congratulations!

With the passing of the pre- registration deadline, we have emassed at least 176 SAABS, which is a new club record for us and a new club record for Carlisle. Our friends with Volvo’s had reached 113 cars at last count, but that could change next week. We are consuming so much of the showfield real estate this year, that Carlisle Events has given us an additional 25 spaces that were previously assigned to the Fiero Club. At this point, it is safe to say that SAABs will once again dominate the largest import show in the East, but Sweden’s second best cars will be giving us their best run for the trophy in years! You could say that this is where it starts to get a little exciting, and every SAAB owner in attendance has alot to be very proud of as we put forth our best effort to date. If any club can take away the club participation trophy this year, we’ve already proven that they’ll have to do it with us at our strongest, and that’s says everything about who we are.

If you missed the pre- registration deadline, but still want to go, please contact us and we’ll provide instructions on what you will need to do.

It’s official: The GM Heritage Collection is scheduled to display all 18 vintage SAABs (the entire collection, on the showfield during SAABs @ Carlisle. Arriving in 3 tractor trailers, these very special cars will be showcased in a large display tent on the showfield, among all of the SAABs, throughout the weekend. This marks the first time that this significant SAAB collection has visited SAABs @ Carlisle, (although several of the cars were shown in prior years by their previous owners).

The GM Heritage Collection totals over 700 significant GM automobiles spanning several decades of concept, production and race cars in the United States, and several hundred more worldwide. Approximately 200 cars reside at the GM Heritage Center , not far from the GM Technical Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan, with the remaining collection stored elsewhere, on loan to museums or on display around the country. The collection was organized in 2005, and puts GM’s collection in very exclusive company with the Smithsonian, Harrah’s and The Blackhawk Collection.

For many SAAB enthsuiasts, this may be their only opportunity to see these cars up close and is an opportunity not to be missed. The GM Heritage Center is not open to the public, so the only way to see the collection is by attending an event where they are displayed.

Thanks again go out to our sponsors for their support this year:

Saab Clubs hold “Born From Jets” tour at Smithsonian Aerospace Musem in Washington, D.C.

On April 22nd, 2007, the Central Pennsylvania Saab Club as well as folks from the Washington, D.C. Saab club visited the Udvar-Hazy Aerospace Museum nearby Dulles International Airport in the Washington, D.C. area. The fact that Saab Automobiles are “Born From Jets”, makes this event location an appropriate venue and was apparently quite an exciting experience with approximately 18 Saabs showing up from all over the mid-atlantic region representing both clubs.

Prior to the event, they will be planning on organizing a convoy, so that all members of Saab club can enjoy a wonderful trip together.
The Washington, D.C.
The Rocky Mountain Saab Club or RMSC is an active club that is open to any and all Saab Owners and Enthusiasts in and around the “Denver, Boulder and Front Range Areas” of Colorado, USA.

In the near future, I will be providing information about what may be arguably the clubs largest project, the 2009 Saab Owners Convention. This will be quite an undertaking, but I have already been hearing about a lot of great work this early in the process.

There have been some incredible news updates on this annual automotive show which continues to increase in popularity.

It looks like as of now there are approximately 88 Saabs that have already pre-registered for the event, so the turnout should be spectacular.

Here is the recent surprise: Saab Automobile USA is driving down the entire Saab USA Heritage Collection to the Carlisle showcase. This is very nice of them and perfect timing as I understand Volvo Cars of North America’s national meet is being held at the Carlisle show as well.

I think the Saab attendance should easily surpass whatever the competion is planning, especially with the the gratious help of Saab Automobile USA.

I will unfortunately not be able to make it to this event even though it is the next state over from me here, so I hope that anyone attending can provide me with some photographs to post here of your experience!

A terrific job the Central Pennsylvania Saab Club (CPSC) is doing in organizing this event. I hope the weather is super and that many Saab owners and enthusiasts turnout to show up the competition!

Below is the CPSC’s recently Carlisle E-mail Update:

Some big announcements with this update: First, we want to thank
of Baltimore (formerly Hunt Valley SAAB) for once again
supporting the event as a sponsor. They have been with us for many
years and we appreciate their continued support.

We also
extend of thanks to Troeg's
Brewery, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for providing some fine,
handcrafted beers for the Friday Evening Cookout. Troeg's was
founded in 1996 by Brothers Chris & John Trogner. They are a
small family-owned brewery dedicated to hand crafting specialty
beers. For those who may not be familiar with them, this should be a
special treat. A special thank you goes to Mike Beare for arranging
this for us, too.

SAAB of Baltimore and Troeg's join our
other event supporters, Lehman SAAB Harrisburg, PA, Don Fatzinger
Automotive, Robesonia, PA and The Corvette Bar & Grill,
Annville, Pennsylvania. We will also be announcing more event
sponsors shortly, as they are finalized

Several days ago we
announced that we had pre- registered 31 cars for SAABs @
Carlisle 2007. That number has more than doubled to 69, and yes,
there is still a along way to go.

In the last e-mail, we
said we were going to try to get everyone off the fence a little
earlier this year. We have planned a special drawing for anyone who
pre- registers by April 1st (This is no April Fool's Joke) and today
is the deadline, so if you haven't done it yet, get off the fence
and get those registrations in to us to be eligible for the prize
drawing, which will be announced later this week.

This is
also an excellent time to recognize a very deserving group of SAAB
enthusiasts who have been supporting this event for several years.
SAABLink.net
is a forum of on-line SAAB enthusiasts, many of whom are members of
our other supporting clubs. It was after reading a post on the forum
that it occurred to us that SAABLink members should share in the
recognition for the success of this event. We have also invited them
to display their banner along with each of the other supporting
clubs. I know that this is another big step in the right direction,
building upon the cooperative spirit within the SAAB Community, and
we look forward to having SAABLink support for many more years to
come.

SAABLink members are also forming several road tours to
the event this year. To date, there are starting points in
holding this event. We are very encouraged by the warm reception
we've received by including this option, and hope that this
still keeping things affordable for everyone.

We have made

In the early years of SAABs@Carlisle, we gathered a group of
hungry SAABers and headed to a local restaurant. This worked nicely
until 2004 when several participants traveling over 400 miles to the
show missed joining up with the group . They had been on the road
all day, and encountered a Friday afternoon accident/traffic jam,
making their arrival much later than expected.

To alleviate
this misfortune again, we decided in 2005 to have a cookout right at
the fairgrounds, so we could greet all of our friends and make
certain no one misses dinner after a long ride to the event. Now in
its third year, we expect an even bigger turnout than last year. So
take your time; we'll have the grill fired up and ready for your
arrival!

All you need to do is pack your favorite cookout
items. Central Penn SAAB Club will have our huge 8 burner grill lit
for you, and even have the plates, napkins and condiments ready for
your enjoyment. Then relax and enjoy your meal in the company of
your friends you may not have seen for a year, or make some new
ones! We will have some tasty samples from Troeg's
Brewery, Harrisburg, PA to enjoy, as well.

After dinner festivities (since 2004 referred to as Carlisle
After Dark!can usually run well passed most our regular
bedtimes, but we only do this once a year.

Don Fatzinger Automotive, Robesonia, Pennsylvania will
once again sponsor the People's Choice Awards, for Saturday's Show
Field event.

The People's Choice Event is likely the
single-most defining activity of the weekend. Nearly every model of
SAAB is represented in this event, with each model parked in their
own designated area of the showfield. This is a "show and shine"
event, meaning that every SAAB is welcome. Most cars are commuter
cars or daily drivers; some are cherished and pampered cars and a
few are purpose-built race cars or show cars.

Attendees are
given a ballot and asked to vote for their favorite cars in each
category. Votes are tabulated using a sophisticated program on a
laptop computer to arrive at the winners in each of 19 categories.

Categories are provided for each model or groupings of
models, with Aeros, Viggens, SPG's and convertibles divided into
additional categories. For cars under construction or restoration,
we have a "Diamond in the Rough" award, as well "High
Performance/ Dare to be Different" award and Chairman's Choice Award.

Our SAABs are parked in areas designated by street signs
with SAAB influence: Viggen Valley Road, Aero Avenue, Drop Top
Drive, Stroker Street to name but a few. Additional signage is also
provided to make finding each of the models very easy. The High
Performance and Diamond categories have their own specially
designated parking areas, so you can't miss them.

What's the
best part of the People's choice event? Most would say "lunch:,
because in order to get your free lunch ticket, you must have your
attendee badge and your ballot. No Votes, No Vittles is how
we've come to know this part of the weekend, and no one has ever
gone away hungry!

The Saturday "No Votes, No Vittles" Lunch will once again be
sponsored by Lehman SAAB, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Look for
Jere Haigh and several of the Lehman's staff to help out again this
year. The lunch will once again be catered by The Corvette
Grill, Annville, Pennsylvania, with Mike Beare and his staff
helping Jere grill up the tastiest Black Angus Burgers and Chicken
for your dining enjoyment. (Jim Verga has also graciously
volunteered to help burn the Bratwurst, too!)

The Central
Penn SAAB Club, and our friends in WASSAAB, NYSOC, NESA, VSCNA and
SCNA extend our sincerest thanks to these sponsors for their
SAABs@Carlisle Tradition

What's better after a long day at the Carlisle Import/Kit
Replicar Nationals at the Carlisle Fairgrounds amongst a few hundred
SAAB enthusiasts? How about a leisurely drive to the picturesque and
historic community of Boiling Springs, PA, just south of Carlisle?
We began this tradition back in 2003 when we realized that we had
quickly outgrown our previous dinner location. The Allenberry
Resort, nestled on 57 country acres, has quickly become a favorite
among the annual activities each year, and for good
reason.

For the past few years, we have dined in the Addison
Room. This year, dinner will be in the larger Carriage Room
adjacent to the Stone
Lodge on the western edge of the property. This location is very
close to where we usually park, and should be a very nice change for
us. (Click
here for a map).

Situated on several well manicured and
wooded acres, The Allenberry Resort is quite a contrast in
comparison. We find it a very relaxing getaway after a big day on
Saturday with the People's Choice event and everything else that
happens on the biggest day of the 3 day weekend.

Dining was Allenberry's first activity. Now, more than 61 years
later, Allenberry's reputation for excellent food, served in a
variety of charming, comfortable settings, is one of the finest in
central Pennsylvania.

While Saturday is the busiest day for SAABs@Carlisle, Sunday is a
nice contrast of relaxing and taking it a little easier. Carlisle
Productions hosts a non- denominational worship service in the
morning. Several of our attendees will be making runs on the
Autocross course on site, or running their cars on the dynomometer.
Sunday is a also another great day to check out the vendor swap meet
for anything you didn't already buy, or negotiate that great deal on
something that a vendor doesn't want to lug back home.

It's
also a great day filled with anticipation, as we await the
announcement of the Club Particpation Award.

We once again
fire up the grill for lunch around noontime and then head over to
the grandstand for the awards activities. Things start to wrap up
around 3:00PM as we say our good-byes for another year.

For SAAB enthusiasts, it’s time to start thinking about SAABs@Carlisle 2007,
to be held May 18-20th, 2007. This year will once again be bigger and
better, and we are hopeful of breaking the elusive 200 SAAB attendance
level. Can we do it this year? The best way to find out is to bring your
SAAB(s) and help us do it.

Here is a writeup as well as a wonderful video on this project from the folks at the Rocky Mountain Saab Club, that are hosting the 2009 Saab Owners Convention by the way. Thank you tremendously for your effort and contribution to the Saab community!

“Laura” is a blue, 1970 Model 96 Saab, with the standard V4 engine. Donated to the club in January of 2002, the car was initially very solid but in definite need of restoration, or at least refurbishing. In the 3-year period from 2002 through 2004 dozens of work parties totaled more than 1000 hours of club member labor. The effort, RMSC’s third major car project, culminated in tying for Best of Show at SOC04 in Crystal Mountain, WA.

Laura, the name of the vehicle donor’s girlfriend, also became the chosen designation for the project. The couple used the vintage Saab as a daily driver in the Seattle area and always worked on the car
together. Tragically, Laura’s life was cut short in a traffic accident while in another vehicle. Her boyfriend soon moved to Boulder, CO bringing along the Saab 96 in hopes of one day restoring the car to pristine condition. Yet, the memories evoked by the old blue Saab, of Laura driving it, proved altogether too painful. Eventually he realized he had to let it go.

After showing Laura at SOC04, the club allowed each member who worked on her to take her home and drive her for a week. Following a suitable period of time the RMSC Board of Directors elected to put Laura up for sale; she was purchased in 2005 by board member Tom Nelson who couldn’t stand the thought of her leaving Colorado.

RMSC members agree that our project objectives should be: to learn helpful restoration processes, get better acquainted with vintage Saabs, have some fun, and find the great satisfaction of saving a
vintage car from the crusher. In addition it will be a chance for hands-on driving and shop experience with a vintage Saab for members that might never have the opportunity of personally owning one. Members are currently working on Project RedBull, a Red 1961 Bullnose that hopefully will provide even more learning opportunities for our group as well as a chance to bond with fellow RMSC members in the process.

Perhaps, with the passage of time and the sight of Laura’s favorite blue Saab in tip-top shape, our project can somehow aid in the healing of one man’s loss.

Enjoy this video, produced and provided by Tom Nelson of the RMSC, that chops down the 1000+ club hours spent, into a well put together 30-minute piece covering the entire restoration/refurbishment process of “Project Laura”.
