Saab Sighting Of The Week “Saab 900 In State Of Play”

Saab Sightings, a feature I started when living in Washington, D.C. has come back around in a recent movie featuring Russell Crowe in “State of Play” who I covered back in April of last year during their filming.

state2.jpgIn this film that I managed to catch over the weekend, I saw Crowe driving a light blue 1990 Saab c900 3-door hatchback. I was really impressed that it was not just one scene but many scenes with the Saab throughout the entire movie as he works as a journalist in the made up “Washington Globe”, a take off of the Washington Post.

This sighting/movie review this week really captures the true essence of traditional journalism against the backdrop of the impending new media industry, now keeping many traditional newspaper companies in business today.

I was very happy to see this film as it was well done in so many ways, but one thing I did not appreciate was Ben Affleck’s reference to Crowe’s Saab in the film sounding like a “lawn mower”!

All in all, State of Play was a very satisfying story of traditional journalism and a true and honest Saab story of the state of the newspaper industry today. Furthermore, a great Saab sighting of the week in such an impressive context!

I suggest you also read the Washington Post’s review and get out and see this film!

U.S. Auto Industry Gets Bridge Loan From White House

CNN Money Reports that the U.S. Auto Industry will get a bridge loan from the U.S. Treasury due to the White House work.
The loan will be for 13.4 million dollars, and this will go towards General Motors and Chrysler as Ford are no longer in need.
I wonder what this will mean for Saab Automobile? Will a buyer come in now that this loan has been approved?

NEW YORK ( — President Bush announced a rescue plan for General Motors and Chrysler LLC Friday morning that will make $13.4 billion in federal loans available almost immediately.

A senior administration official briefing reporters said he expects that GM (GM, Fortune 500) and Chrysler LLC will be signing the loan papers to access the cash later Friday morning.

The money will come from the $700 billion fund set aside to bailout Wall Street firms and banks in October.

With these loans, Treasury will have committed virtually all of the $350 billion of that fund that it can hand out without additional authorization from Congress. Once Congress releases the other $350 billion, the two automakers will be able to borrow an additional $4 billion.

The loans are three-year loans but the money will have to be repaid immediately if the firms do not show themselves to be viable by March 31. It is expected that the companies will have to negotiate new agreements with unions and creditors in order to do so.

Saab Sighting of the Week – National Gallery of Art, D.C.

Today marks the Saab Sighting of the week taken at the modern art section of the National Gallery of Art here in Washington, D.C. I think this photo in addition to the previous photo of the laser red Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan at the original wing of the NGA are great additions to this ongoing series of Saab sightings.

The 1990 Saab 900 Turbo in this sighting appears to have been repainted as of late, but as you can see, both inside and out, this “black turbo” is in super condition and the mileage is just a tad over 110,000.

Saab History Meets With GW Students On Saab Advertising

Today, following the previous meet a GWU Saab Ad team last week, I again met with the students at another Saab Team Aisle 8 at George Washington University conveniently located here in Washington, D.C.

What I gathered from this experience was that these intelligent students with the Aisle 8 team are working hard to create the most effective advertising campaign for Saab in direct competition to the other three teams. Very interesting data that I have heard from today, and I think the dialog was extremely mutually beneficial.

As I said before and I will say it again, I am gaining more confidence in this collaboration with Saab USA & George Washington University. I am eagerly looking forward to more dialog with both of these teams and of course the final presentations to Saab during the week of April 30th.

Russell Crowe’s Saab 900 Caught On Film in D.C.

Film Credit: Channel 9 News

Actor Russell Crowe’s Saab 900 3-door in malachite green has been caught on film by channel 9 news here in Washington, D.C. The car appears to be located as earlier mentioned, directly on Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Streets, N.W. in front of the Wilson Building.

This debaged car has to be a 1990 model from what I can make out and it certainly is not a 1997 model as the aforementioned script detailed, it looks like the GW Students writing for that paper were pretty close on the year, but far off on the color. I am glad that I finally got to the bottom of this mystery before the actual film was produced and hit the big screen!

Maybe we’ll also get to see some footage of him actually behind the wheel actually driving it instead of carting it around on that car carrier.

I also wonder how the production crew got the car and where? I also wonder why the car is completely debadged, because we all know what a Saab looks like, even non Saab owners and enthusiasts.

Location: 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C.

Actor Russell Crowe Spotted Driving Saab in D.C.

Posted on 01. Apr, 2008 by .

As part of ongoing filming in the Washington, D.C. area whereby a great deal of which took place while I was out of town, includes some recent sightings of actor, Russell Crowe spotted driving a classic Saab 900 in light blue on Pennsylvania Avenue not too far from the White House.

The filming involving Russell Crowe is part of the movie “State of Play” to be released in 2009.

Here is a quote from the George Washington hatchet student run newspaper:

Crowe sat in a light blue 1980’s Saab for much of the shoot as the scene involved him driving down Pennsylvania Avenue. As part of the scene, Crowe’s car stops running in the middle of the street. About 20 other vehicles, including a bus, were driven simultaneously, on cue, to allow Crowe’s car to blend into the scene.

However, one of the scriptwriters indicates the contrary when it comes to the year of the Saab.

The only info the script gives about the car is when Cal (Russell’s character) describes it as a:

“1997 Saab with velour seats”.

All other mentions of the car just describe it as “Cal’s SAAB” or “the SAAB” – but no other details are mentioned unfortunately.

Update: I have just received the actual script, all 126 pages of this film and see the references to where the Saabs are as of now besides Pennsylvania avenue.

The other locations include outside of the Watergate building in the morning, and during the afternoon.

I hope that during the remaining 5 days of filming in the district, someone can get some photographs of this Saab if it’s still being filmed, or at least some photography from the prior scenes when it was filmed on Pennsylvania avenue here in Washington, D.C. to bring clarity to this subject.

For more information on this film, I suggest you check out both Wikipedia as well as IMDB.

Saab Sighting Of the Week – The White House

Posted on 01. Apr, 2008 by .

There has been a lot of news lately over the past few weeks during my trip up to the North East region of the United States. I want to begin with some local coverage that continues the thread I started a few years ago called the “Saab Sighting of the Week” where I have taken photos of Saabs in and around the Washington, D.C. area.

This sighting was none other than a Saab 9-3 Sports Sedan actually “inside” of the White House grounds unlike the Saab 9-3 SportCombi spotted on Pennsylvania avenue, which has been closed to public traffic for a number of years.
