Former Saab Designer, Anthony Lo, who I interviewed this past September in Frankfurt and previously in Detroit a year earlier, has left GM to take a new position with Renault according to Car Design News

Lo, led what people refer to as the “concept car era” for Saab under GM’s ownership, beginning with the 9-X in 2001, 9-3x, 9-3 Sport Hatch, Aero-X, 9-4x BioPower, 9-X BioHybrid and ending with the 9-X Air in 2008.

He brought a lot of design skills to the table with Saab and it was a pleasure to have him on board.

Anthony Lo who I interviewed last January in Detroit spoke with me about his time working with Saab since departing earlier this year to stay with Opel. After nearly 9 years as the advanced design director for Saab Automobile’s future products and concept cars, he decided to stay in Germany.

You may remember Lo led what people refer to as the “concept car era” beginning with the 9-X in 2001, and ending with the 9-X Air just last year.

It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to interview him, in an audio only format since he is no longer an employee of Saab. A sincere thank to to Anthony Lo, as well as Tynan’s Saab & JMK Saab for making it happen.

The Saab 9-3 Sport Combi was launched in 2005 in Trollhattan, Sweden as the 4 millionth car to be produced by Saab. The first model came as a 2006 Model year as a 5-door wagon, while adopting the “Combi” phrasing as a throwback to the Combi Coupe launch back in 1974.

The SportCombi was an addition to the 9-3 Sport Sedan model, but a design continuation of both the 9-3X Concept Car as well as the 9-3 Sport Hatch Concept designed by Einar Hareide, Taras Czorny, as well as Anthony Lo & Michael Mauer.

The Saab 9-3 SportCombi continues to be produced in Trollhattan, Sweden.

This model for Saab came equipped with the following specifications:

Saab 9-6x Patent Application Submitted to US Government In 2007

The Saab 9-6x, which was evidently canned when GM sold their stake in Fuji-Heavy Industries (Subaru) after producing the Saab 9-2x, have recently submitted an application for their patent of the 9-6x with the U.S. Federal Patent & Trademark office in Washington, D.C.

I wonder what this means, moving forward, especially since one of the leading Saab designers, Anthony Lo, whom I interviewed back in January of 2008 in Detroit, submitted the application along with German & Swedish design associates, Kelkeim & Anders Gustaffson Hindås, respectively.

So here’s the question, why were they submitting this information recently, given that the program was scrapped back in late 2006 when GM sold the Subaru stake?

I recently participated in another installment of the GM Next chat with Saab Designer, Anthony Lo. Anthony Lo joined Saab Automobile AB in October, 2000, as chief designer for Advanced Design. Lo has lead the design of the Saab 9-X, 9-3X, 9-3 Sport Hatch, and Aero-X, 9-4x, 9-X BioHybrid concept cars.

I was very interested to hear many of his responses to the questions posed: Please keep in mind that the order in which the questions posted did not necessarily sync up with all answers, so please use your own intuition.

Here is the full chat transcript below:

A.Lo.Moderator:
Hello everyone, I’m Dave Roman, Director of GM Europe Technology & Design Communications, and I will be your moderator for this webchat session. Anthony has arrived and he is logging into the chat right now. We’ll get started in a moment.

SaabHistory.com:
What are your thoughts on the Saab 9-X BioHybrid?

Anthony.Lo:
Good morning! The 9-X BioHybrid is our vision on what a compact size Saab would look líke.

SaabHistory.com:
On model nomenclature: Why was the Saab 9-X reusing the 9-X again, instead of 9-1x?

Anthony.Lo:
As it remains as a concept, we would like to reuse the 9-X nomenclature.

SaabHistory.com:
On Technology: What will be making production (ie. Solar Panels, etc.) and do the solar panels on this car actually work this time or is it just theoretical?

Anthony.Lo:
The hybrid system is announced for production on future GM vehicles. On the solar panel, we are working on several studies on how to improve battery performance and solar is one of them. The panel itself does not work on the concept.

As a guest invited by Saab Automobile USA & General Motors, it was a privilege and an honor to be present for this world premiere of the first introduction of this crossover product segment for the Saab brand. I also realized that much like I did previously with the Turbo-X launch, it was important to once again provide good video coverage in addition to photography. With that in mind, I took the initiative to solicit contributions and in that process, Donald Koziol of Saab Colorado, Inc. came in at the nick of time to sign up as a site sponsor. This support ultimately faciliated the ability to cover costs to rent a professional camcorder to film the event.

I began this event by flying out early from National Airport in Washington, D.C. en-route to a blistery cold, yet clear and sunny Detroit, Michigan. This was the first time I visited this city, but the second time I visited region which took place in August during the 25th Anniversary of the annual Saab Owners Convention that was held in Troy, Michigan. On that day, I took advantage of getting acclimated to the region by seeing some of the sights through a few nice tours.

The first interview I had at the 2008 NAIAS, was with Saab Designer, Anthony Lo. Anthony Lo, whom I recently chatted with online thanks to GM Next, has worked with with Saab Automobile since 2000. He has been responsible for many Saab concept cars including the Saab 9-X, Saab 9-3X, Saab 9-3 Sport Hatch, Aero-X and today the Saab 9-4x BioPower Concept.

It was nice to hear how the distinctive design elements were designed such as the raked grille 3-port fully opened grille, signature lighting in the glass-block inspired headlights & tail lights, the aircraft inspired sleek design, especially with the wrap-around windshield, c-pillars and more.

A thank you to Saab Automobile, General Motors, Saab Colorado, Inc. and of course Anthony Lo for his time and explanations on this new design language for Saab.
