Saab History has learned that U.S. Saab dealers will be meeting in Boston early this week. The invite was extended to all Saab dealerships in the United States.

The meeting will be the first official in person gathering for Saab dealers following the acquisition of Saab Automobile by Spyker Cars, N.V. The meeting begins this evening with a meet & greet reception at 6pm, followed by meetings on Tuesday.

This looks like a good opportunity to meet the new leadership of Saab Cars North America and quite possibly, Spyker Cars as well.

This week’s Saab Sighting of the week depicts a Saab 900 Turbo with the SPG kit painted in yellow, taken near what looks to be a boat house of some sort with the Boston skyline in the background.

I am surprised that in all of my travels, this is the first time seeing this unique Saab in the greater Boston area. I hope to get more details from the owner of this Saab.

Saab Sighting Of The Week "Saab 9000 Taxi Service In Ski Resort Town Of North Conway, New Hampshire"

Over the past year, I have passed through North Conway, a ski resort town located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and have encountered a few curious Saab sightings each time. These Saab sightings peaked my curiosity because each of the two Saab 9000 models I discovered, had a yellow sign mounted on the roof. As we drove by them, we never got the chance to read what type of business they represented (I initially presumed Pizza Delivery Services), until now.

Today, I decided to explore more deeply into what company was driving these Saabs and that turned out to be a company appropriately called “Fast Taxi”. According to the owner of the Fast Taxi, they own “two Saab 9000 CSE models for taxi services in the greater ski resort area”.

These vehicles have been in use for approximately 5 years now as the current owner has been acquiring the vehicles from the greater Boston area. Apparently the previous owner of these vehicles believed that once the Saab’s hit 100,000 miles, they are no longer useful, the owner of Fast Taxi strongly disagrees. In fact, her vehicles now have over 200,000 miles on them and today, her customers indicate that they continue to enjoy being chauffuered and with the hatchback utility, luggage is never a problem.

This is another one of these great marketing stories for Saab, specifically here in New England. Please expect a follow-up to this Saab Sighting Of The Week.

Saab History Looks Forward To The Week Ahead

Posted on 10. Jan, 2010 by .

This past weekend is our last weekend we have until we learn about the fate of Saab Automobile this coming week.

As the news over this weekend is pretty much a non-event so far, I did manage to visit Boston on Saturday. During this trip, I visited the old neighborhood where I bought my first Saab (Charlestown, Massachusetts)! and even took a photo of the street corner where I bought it! I almost feel like I’ve come around full circle, and ironically, just before the news that we’ll learn about this week!

In gaining a lot of information with all of the appropriate parties, I cannot expect anything other than good news this coming week. Opposed to all of the drama we’ve been experiencing over the year, especially the big bumps this past fall from the dealership closures on Nov 13th, the Koenigsegg termination on Nov 24th, the wind down notice on the 18th of December, and the liquidation notice this past Friday the 8th, are all part of the bumpy road to broader horizons for Saab Automobile’s future. I had tough time believing this statement too until learning more about the status of Saab Automobile’s sale process recently.

We have until January 15th until Saab Automobile would be liquidated and as of now, the management of Saab Automobile in Sweden no longer has any autonomy over their subsidiary of GM, so it’s up to a new buyer to save the company.

I must say that from all of the good news I’ve learned over the last 24-48 hours that I hope will become a reality soon, I would be extremely surprised that Saab Automobile does not end up on top with a new buyer this coming week!

Boston Power’s Battery System For Zero Emission Saabs

Posted on 11. Dec, 2009 by .

Here is the information on Boston Power’s “Swing” Battery system for use in the 100 Zero Emission Saab 9-3s.

It looks very promising and I can’t wait for a day where I could test drive a zero emission Saab. With this program already in play and now with financing, it seems like it’s just a matter of time, and not much either.

Boston-Power’s Swing Battery – Electric Vehicle and Transportation Applications

Based on our lithium-ion battery technology platform and designed to meet the requirements of a wide range of transportation systems, the Swing 4400 is one of the most cost effective solutions available today. Swing’s extended cycle and calendar life and high energy density make it 20-50% more efficient in system weight and space compared to existing solutions. The Swing 4400 also provides the high constant and transient power required in many electric vehicle applications.

Some of the key benefits offered by the Swing 4400 over alternative cell technologies include:

* High energy density of 180Wh/kg
* Volumetric density of 420Wh/L
* Industry-leading cycle life:
o Over 1000 cycles at 100% Depth Of Discharge (DOD)
o Over 2000 cycles at 90% DOD
* High constant power of 440W/kg
* Pulse power of 1500 W/kg (2s pulse)
* Flexible and scalable packaging
* Excellent thermal properties
* Nordic Ecolabel accreditation
* UL, UN, and ROHS certifications

The All New Saab 9-5 At The New England Auto Show

Saab History has recently attended the 2009 the New England Auto Show in Boston, Massachusetts to see the all new Saab 9-5. The last time we were at the Boston Auto Show was in the fall of 2007, when the North American premiere of the Turbo-X took place.

Having experienced the global debut of the all new Saab 9-5 back in September, this event was of course a smaller display, naturally as it is a continuation of the North American premiere which began in Miami during October.

Upon entering the show, we headed directly to see the all new Saab 9-5, which was a delight to see. This premiere in Boston, was the first time a new Saab 9-5 was in New England in twelve years. The last time a new Saab 9-5 was shown to the public for the first time in New England was during 1997 Saab Owners Convention in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. […]

All New Saab 9-5 Showcased At San Francisco Auto Show

The second North American preview for the all new Saab 9-5 debuted at the San Francisco Auto Show this past Thursday (Thanksgiving). This show will continue until Tuesday, December 2nd, but the all new 9-5 leaves today to head to the Los Angeles show.

Dino, a Saab History frequenter has been kind enough to share with us photographs from the experience above. It’s nice to see the all new Saab 9-5 continuing the auto show circuit that began in Miami last month here in the United States as it’s European tour was recently canceled.

Here is a summary he provided of his experience:

The show and the Saab booth were relatively well attended, considering it was Thanksgiving. All of the comments I overheard were all quite positive and complimentary about the new 9-5. Many people examined it from all angles. The new 9-5 has real presence – especially from the front. The fit and finish were superb and what I liked most were the details e.g. The half black mirrors that matched the window frames, the “notch” in the front of the hood that the upper part of the grill nested in. down-turn on the front upper part of the front grill etc.

The next show where the all new Saab 9-5 will be scheduled to be, is Los Angeles as well as Boston starting this week. These two parallel shows with a little overlap, will wrap up the all new Saab 9-5’s United States tour in 2009.
