This week’s Saab sighting of the week comes from James Dale, the one who recently purchased a beautiful 1993 Saab 900 CE from Swedish Motor Cars.

He’s provided us a photo of an extremely impressive “barn find” in Canada. This vehicle is a 1977 Saab 99 EMS with 55,000 original miles on it!

I guess the deal with these “barn finds” are just as legend has it, you find them in some old barn, virtually untouched and need only minor work with with extremely low mileage. I can’t believe there are still “barn finds” for Saabs here in North America as Scandinavia is another story.

Great job James! Glad that you got your Brother to buy it! Here’s the rest of the story by James:

I responded to an ad on the weekend stating There was a 1977 EMS for sale- no photo included. I answered the ad and drove about 60 miles out with my brother to see it. Met this kind gentleman who opened a barn up to reveal this gem perfectly preserved ems. He supplied his original receipt for $8,300.00 Canadian dollars off the Saab showroom floor. He bought it when he was 32. I made my brother buy it and we drove it home. We cannot believe this gem with full service records was sitting in this Barn waiting 55,000 miles on it- he loved it so much he wanted to preserve it. We assured it was going to a good home. 4000.00 canadian We are still pinching ourselves.

Saab Dealerships In Canada To Continue

Saab History has covered the status of Saab dealerships in Canada earlier this fall, but now there seems to be a good resolution in place.

Evidently, according to the global and mail, the dealerships will continue by Saab Cars North America working directly with distributor, International Fleet Sales, Inc. of California to make it all happen.

While this is positive news, how is it that so many of these dealerships have been told that they are to close, and now many months later, they are asked to stay?

Saab’s history in Canada started in 1975 with a distributor, so continuing this plan will not be any different than it was since it began.

Here’s the story below.

Saab, one of four brands being jettisoned or sold by General Motors Co., will continue in Canada under new ownership and a smaller dealer network, Canadian dealers say.

Here’s the official word that while GM Canada will no longer distribute Saab Automobiles in Canada as of December 31st, 2009.

While, GM has taken the initiative to work together with the Penske group who is purchasing Saturn from them, there is no clarity on the future of Saab dealerships in Canada, even though these two separate entities share facilities together.

For those of you who haven’t read the history of Saab Canada, please read the piece I received from them a year ago where they now need to add a new chapter to it.

General Motors and Koenigsegg Group AB Reach Tentative Agreement on Saab

# Deal will secure Saab’s future
# EIB expected to provide $600 million financing with state guarantee by the Swedish government
# GM reinvention achieves another milestone

Zurich. General Motors Corp. and Koenigsegg Group AB, a consortium led by Koenigsegg Automotive AB, today confirmed the details of a memorandum of understanding for the purchase of Saab Automobile AB that secures Saab’s future.

The sale, expected to close by the end of the third quarter of this year, includes an expected $600 million funding commitment from the European Investment Bank (EIB) guaranteed by the Swedish government. Additional support is to be provided by GM and Koenigsegg Group AB to fund Saab’s operations and product program investments. This includes plans to launch several new products that are in the final stages of development. Saab had filed for reorganization under Swedish Law on Feb. 20, 2009. This tentative agreement is a key milestone for Saab to successfully emerge from its reorganization process.

“This is yet another significant step in the reinvention of GM and its European operations,” said GM Europe President, Carl-Peter Forster. “Saab is a highly respected automotive brand with great potential. Closing this deal represents the best chance for Saab to emerge a stronger company. Koenigsegg Group’s unique combination of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and financial strength, combined with Koenigsegg’s proven ability to create world-class Swedish performance cars in a highly efficient manner, made it the right choice for Saab as well as for General Motors.”

As part of the proposed transaction, GM will continue to provide Saab with architecture and powertrain technology during a defined time period. Additionally, Saab plans to produce its next generation 9-5 models in the Saab production facility in Trollhättan, Sweden.

“The proposed agreement will enable us to maximize the brand’s potential through an exciting new product line-up with a distinctly Swedish character. Today’s announcement is great news for Saab’s current and future customers, dealers, suppliers and employees around the globe, said Jan Åke Jonsson, Managing Director of Saab Automobile AB.

The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale are not being disclosed at this time. Deutsche Bank acted as financial advisor to General Motors Corporation.
