"Save Saab" Campaign Sends Strong Message To GM HQ

I want to say, today was from what everyone that attending including the press have said, a great success. We had over 50 people attend which is phenomenal, and over 20 press members from local and national interviewing us.

Everyone that attended included folks from Cape Cod & Hingham, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin and as far away as Iowa! The true Saab spirit really was well represented and you could feel it.

The folks at GM were very supportive of this initiative today and despite the weather, we all hung out outside in the parking lot with the GM world headquarters as our backdrop for nearly 2 hours in the blistering cold and snowy weather to send our message.

The message we believed we were successful in sending was for GM to “Sell Saab”. We hope that the press coverage will be as positive as it can be in covering this event.

The job is not yet done as there is one last remaining aspect to the “Save Saab” campaign and that is for GM to Sell Saab.

It was clear today that they got our message, now they just need to do the right thing and complete the deal.

More to come!

The “Save Saab” initiative

SAAB-Cape Cod – New England Telephone Ad – 1957

Posted on 18. Apr, 2007 by .

As a follow-up to the story that I have covered earlier on the SAAB dealership that Kurt Vonnegut was a Sales Manager at, I have recently received some information from the folks at the W.B. Nickerson library at the Cape Cod Community College. This image is a scan of the SAAB-Cape Cod dealership from the 1957 New England Telephone directory. This advertisement effectively confirms that 1957 is the year that the SAAB-Cape Cod was believed to have started by the recent comments of Saab historian and former editor of the Saab Club Magazine, Nines, Tim Winker.

SAAB Cape Cod – Kurt Vonnegut’s dealership

Posted on 15. Apr, 2007 by .

As a follow-up to the story on Kurt Vonnegut’s passing this past week, I have been able to find some more information about the location of this dealership. There are now two pieces of information that confirm the location and the year the dealership was in existance (1958) by a recent comment by Mark Bourbeau. Here is an excerpt from his comments.

My father, an artist and friend of Vonnegut’s at the time, worked with him in the Saab Dealership. It was a shoestring operation, and only lasted a short time, but was located in what I think was the old West Barnstable fire station on Route 6A, which is still there

It also appears from the letterhead that is illustrated in Vonnegut’s “A Man Without A Face” novel, that SAAB Cape Cod was located on Route 6A, W. Barnstable, Massachusetts.

Now all we need are some original vintage photographs and in the meantime, a photograph showing this location at this fire station.

Novelist Kurt Vonnegut dies at 84

Posted on 12. Apr, 2007 by .

200px-vonnegut12.jpgNovelist Kurt Vonnegut dies at 84 years old. One of his most notable novels includes Slaughterhouse-Five. Outside of writing, Kurt Vonnegut found himself during a short period of time working as a SAAB salesman by running a Cape Code automobile dealership in West Barnstable, Massachusetts called “SAAB Cape Cod”.

I am currently looking for the years he ran SAAB Cape Cod along with any photographs of that dealership.

Update: With a few quick calls to Hyannis Saab and the local West Barnstable Library, both in Cape Cod, Massacchusetts, I have heard that no one was familiar with a dealership in that area at that time. If someone could shed some more light on this, I would appreciate it.
