Spyker CEO, Victor Muller Speaks To Forbes Magazine about his purchase of Saab Automobile.

I encourage you to read this article and watch the included video as well.

“Saab lost customers because we didn’t make the products they wanted,” says Muller. “We didn’t make any crossovers or forward drive, and we had a 13-year old 9-5. We lost customers to Audi and BMW.”

In my interview with him, Muller admitted that Spyker is now more famous for saving Saab than anything else. He hopes that having such a strong brand name behind Saab will show people that “Saab of today is a new Saab.”

Saab History Interviews Joel Manby About Undercover Boss

Saab History has had the great chance once again to interview Joel Manby, Saab Cars USA’s former President (1996-2000). This interview is about about his recently mentioned experience on the CBS television series “Undercover Boss”.

A sincere thank you to Joel for his input about this series prior to the air date this Sunday night, March 28th at 9pm EST. I particularly like his last response pertaining to Saab Automobile.

Enjoy the interview below:

1) How did you initially get involved in CBS “Undercover Boss”?

The producers contacted us. They were looking for an entertainment company and theme parks provide a good visual background. Because we are independently owned, not associated with a media conglomerate, and have a variety of properties—-theme parks, aquariums, sightseeing operations— we were a good option for them.

2) What were some of the areas of the program that interested you most?

At first we were very skeptical. Anytime someone proactively approaches us and wants to produce a television show on our property, then healthy skepticism follows. But as we engaged in serious dialogue with them, we realized that they were really searching for companies who would embrace the concept and be willing to hold the mirror up to see what we could learn about ourselves. This wasn’t a scripted television program but rather an honest look at our employees and their roles within our organization. I know that when I visit our properties that I get special treatment, even though I don’t want it or ask for it. This was a unique opportunity to work the front lines in a way that I would never be able
to do currently. I know we have terrific employees—and I wanted to witness first-hand how dedicated and passionate our employees are as they interact with our guests to ‘create memories worth repeating’. I didn’t just want to observe, I wanted to participate and feel their passion. So, highlighting the good people of Herschend Family Entertainment was important to me.

Newly-independent Saab Resumes Car Production

* Production resumes at Saab Automobile’s Trollhättan plant
* First cars manufactured by Saab as an independent company
* All-new Saab 9-5 sedan was first car down the line
* Saab CEO, Spyker CEO, and Trollhättan Plant Director in attendance

Trollhättan, Sweden. The production lines at Saab Automobile’s state-of-the-art Trollhättan plant began rolling again today, heralding a new era for the Swedish premium car maker as an independent company. To mark the occasion, Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson, Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller and Trollhättan Plant Director Gunnar Brunius took up positions on the line alongside assembly workers as the first batch of cars was built.

Production at the Trollhättan plant was originally halted for seven weeks. Now, following the purchase of Saab Automobile AB by Spyker Cars NV, the first cars to be built by Saab as an independent company will soon be delivered to customers.

“Today’s resumption of production is a milestone in the history of our company” said Jan Åke Jonsson. “We are up and running as an independent manufacturer and I am delighted to share the experience on the line alongside our workforce. They have shown tremendous commitment to the company and we are all now focused on ramping up production to meet customer demand.”

First on the line today was an all-new Saab 9-5 sedan, destined to join a test fleet prior to the model’s official launch later this year. Further down the line was a Saab Convertible, now also being produced in Trollhättan as part of the concentration of Saab operations in Sweden. With the introduction of the new 9-5 SportCombi next year, a total of five model lines will be produced at the plant.

“We have a highly flexible, world-class facility here at Trollhättan,” said Plant Director Gunnar Brunius. “Our ability to build so many different models in one location improves plant utilization and will deliver valuable efficiency gains. With these state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated workforce, we are in excellent shape.”

Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars said: “Everyone at Saab has worked extremely hard to reach this important point. Today production restarted with a new 9-5 first down the line – a fitting symbol that a new era has begun.”

Next Gen Saab 9-3 Is More Than 2 Years Into Development

Edmunds Inside line indicates that the next generation Saab 9-3 is more than two years into development at this time, according to Victor Muller of Spyker Cars.

In addition to this vehicle, Muller indicates that he would also like to build a premium compact vehicle known as the 92.

This is all very good news for future product development at Saab.

TROLLHÄTTAN, Sweden — Saab-Spyker chief Victor Muller says he would like the company to build a what he calls a 92, a compact, premium model drawing inspiration from the original 93, “though not a retro design,” he stresses.

The car would be positioned “somewhere north of the Mini” and would need a technical partner for Saab to be able to bring it to market. For this reason, it is not part of the business plan intended to return Saab to profitability by 2016.

However, Muller and Saab CEO Jan-Ake Jonsson say they have been surprised by the level of interest shown by other manufacturers in selling Saab hardware and technology. Jonsson is also hoping to sell Saab expertise, including its experience with turbos, transmissions and gasoline engines.

Muller also says that the next-generation 9-3 is more than two years into development, “with basic engineering done, with two years in which to add more Saab DNA,” before launch. That will have allowed Spyker to get the fully engineered new 9-5, the 9-4X, the 9-3, and a re-equipped factory “for the price of a wind tunnel.”
