Historic Recreation: Saab and Spyker CEOs to Drive Classic Saabs on Mille Miglia

Saab and Spyker CEOs to run Saab 93s in 2010 Mille Miglia Celebration of class win in 1957

Trollhättan, Sweden. Italian hillsides are about to reverberate again to the distinctive crackle of a Saab two-stroke engine. Providing the soundtrack will be Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson and Saab Automobile Chairman and Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller, who will each drive a 1957-vintage Saab 93 at this year’s historic Mille Miglia road race.

The two executives are celebrating the 93’s class win on this unique event 53 years ago with cars prepared by the Saab Car Museum in Sweden. Jonsson and Muller will be following, at a more leisurely pace, in the wheel tracks of the 1957 class winner crewed by Charlie Lohmander and co-driver Harald Kronegård. Today’s annual classic recreation of the 1,000-mile (1,600 km) Brescia-Rome-Brescia route is held over three days on open roads and decided on punctuality between check-points. Jonsson and Muller will be co-driven by their sons, Christian, 38, and Olivier,18, respectively.

Powered by a 45 hp, 748 cc, three-cylinder engine, but weighing only 810 kilos, the Saab 93’s agile handling and good aerodynamics enabled it to embarrass far more powerful, larger cars. “Saab’s early success on this event is part of our rich heritage,” said Jan Åke Jonsson. “We’re looking forward to competing once again with the Saab 93, although we won’t be driving it quite so fast.”

This year’s event, from 6 – 8 May, is Victor Muller’s tenth Mille Miglia. “The 93 is unlike any other car I’ve entered, which is hardly surprising as it’s a Saab,” he said. “Jan Åke and I will enjoy the event and we’re looking forward to a little friendly rivalry between team-mates. It certainly won’t be as intense as the competition between Eklund and Blomqvist when they were rallying with Saabs in the late 70s.”

Mike Jager has recently covered Per Eklund’s protege, Toomas Heikkinen where he will participate in the first two events of the 2010 Finnish Rallycross Championship.

It was in March where we first learned that Heikkinen is being groomed by Eklund for future rallycross events with the Eklund team.

The Swedish Rallycross Championship, the ‘Rallycross Norden’ events and probably eight events of the 2010 FIA European Rallycross Championship is the plan for Per Eklund this year. Like Michael Jernberg yesterday, Andréas Eriksson this last saturday, and Kenneth Hansen last week, Eklund also attended Strängnäs Motorstadion for some testing before the season. He had this time only brought his “old” SAAB 9-3 with him. “Everything underneath is the same – it is only the model that is older – otherwise it is just as fast as my other Division 1 cars,”he explained.

Saab Rally Team Dominates Sandblast Rally

Our favorite Saab Rally Team from the North East region of the United States has dominated the recent aforementioned Sand Blast rally that took place in South Carolina this past weekend.

Please read their writeup in their own words about the experience below:

The deep sand and rugged terrain of the sandhills region of South Carolina proved to be a challenge to both driver and vehicle in the 2008 running of the Sandblast Rally.

The day started well with a refreshingly warm morning and abundant sunshine as the rally cars lined up at the ceremonial start and Parc Expose in Cheraw SC. With the importance of finishing this event weighing heavily on the SAABrally.com team, we took some time to survey the competition. Eight other vehicles filled the entry list of our competitive Modified 1 class. Surrounding our 1975 SAAB 99 were Porsche, Mitsubishi, Datsun, Ford and Nissan, all well prepared and poised to attack the stages.

The first stage was no warm-up at over 15 miles in length. A good stage time would be necessary to secure a shot at an overall 2wd and class victory. We set off into the sand with a fury, knowing that carrying as much speed as possible would give us the momentum needed to get through the knee deep sand washouts and canyon like ruts. We finished the first stage by catching the 4wd car that had started a minute in front of us. Comparing time with the other competitors we were surprised to learn that our time was nearly a minute quicker than any other 2wd car! This gave us confidence and left us in a good position, but we knew we would need to stay consistent and drive smart since we still had a long day ahead of us.

The Saab Rally Team team in the North Eastern part of the United States that won a race back in the fall in West Virginia, will be rallying again this weekend in two SAAB 99s this time around.

This team is managed by driver Luke Sorenson and co-driver Seth Strait, both experienced veterans in the Saab Rally scene. This team has been consisently been coming in on top at the recent rallys they have participated in. This team has been doing it all from a launch of the website the fall of ’06, to the development and sale of custom designed and engineered Saab rally parts to winning rallys, I can’t wait to see what is next in store for the Saab Rally team. This time around their new colleagues will be Per Schroeder and Jason Grahn.

Please read all about this engagement below in their own words:

This coming weekend marks the first time in many years that not one, but two rally prepared SAAB 99’s will take to the stages in a North American Rally! The modified 1975 SAAB 99 fielded by Luke Sorensen and John Iden will duke it out for points in the highly competetive M1 modified class. This will mark the start of the 4th season for the saabrally.com supported team.
Complimenting this will be the historically correct 1977 99 entered by Per Schroeder and Jason Grahn. This will be the first event for the antelope brown 99, and it will compete for honors in the stock class. Details about the respective teams can be found at www.saabrally.com and
www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/news/category/project-cars/current-project-cars/1977-saab-99/

Set on the sandy backroads around Cheraw South Carolina, Sandblast rally is the 1st event of season for the NASA eastern states championship. 32 teams will battle for an important early season finish and the championship points. The deeps sand pits can prove troublesome for 2wd cars, with last year just better than 50% of 2wd cars finishing.
More details about the rally can be found at www.sandblastrally.com

The Saab Rally Team that got 5th place at the West Virginia Rally have recently submitted a video showcasing their incredible rally driving skills.

This team is managed by driver Luke Sorenson and co-driver Seth Strait, both experienced veterans in the Saab Rally scene. This team has been consistently been coming in on top at the recent rallys they have participated in. This team has been doing it all from a launch of the website this past fall, to the development and sale of custom designed and engineered Saab rally parts to winning rallys, I can’t wait to see what is next in store for the Saab Rally team which I understand will be sometime next week.

They have certainly done an excellent job in keeping the rally scene alive and on top. I hope you have enjoyed the film as much as I have. I wonder if they are looking for additional sponsors at this time?
