Saab-Scania Of America Dealer Support Promo Video With Sten Helling, National Director Sales & Marketing – 1987

Posted on 04. Jun, 2009 by .

Sten Helling, former National Manager of Sales & Marketing for Saab-Scania of America, Inc. until he retired as President on October of 1991, significantly impacted Saab’s sales in the United States over that time.

Through a stellar effort along with former President of Saab-Scania of America, Bob Sinclair and their team in Orange, Connecticut, they ensured the historical “60 consecutive months of sales growth” from 1982 until 1986.

There were many aspects that contributed to this unprecedented time for Saab in the United States, but one of them was quite clear, dealership development.

In this video above received a the Saabs @ Carlisle event recently, Sten Helling describes all of the aspects that the Saab team prepared, in order to support the dealerships in the United States in 1987 for the following year.

You will find that this support is absolutely incredible, and it is my hope that this kind of organized, well thought out and planned approach can return again some day in the not-so-distant future for Saab in the United States.

I hope you enjoy watching this video whether you are a consumer, dealer or just plain all around enthusiast interested in seeing a turnaround for Saab Automobile.

Saab-Scania Of America, Inc. U.S. Satellite Office 1990?

Posted on 07. May, 2009 by .

Photo Credit: Saab-Scania of America, Inc.

As part of one of the films recently provided, I found some footage at the end of one of them with an unknown to me, Saab-Scania of America, Inc. office.

This office facility and the prominently displayed address, did not resemble any of the facilities in Orange, Connecticut, so I have to ask, where was this facility in the United States and when did it operate and what was the full address?

I would like to add these details to the Saab History in the United States.

I have located an address from a 1994 press release, unsure it it’s the same address as displayed above. Anyone know?

Saab History Wants An Aggressive Relaunch Of Saab Automobile In North America This Year

Posted on 01. May, 2009 by .

It has been twenty years since I recall seeing one of the most aggressive advertising campaigns spearheaded by none other than former Saab-Scania of America, Inc’s, Bob Sinclair.

In this video, filmed in 1989 at the former Saab-Scania headquarters in Orange, Connecticut, just before 50% of Saab Automobile was purchased by General Motors, you will see Bob Sinclair sending a strong message about an aggressive advertising campaign that really hits the nail on the head.

At that time, it was the energy that leaders such as Bob Sinclair had that really encouraged people to be excited about a car company such as Saab and you can see it in the video so clearly.

Today, it’s about not only leadership and energy, but also those that have passion for the company and we need to bridge that gap this year to what Bob Sinclair brought to the table. I have said it before and I will say it again, we need all of this and more for the new Saab Automobile North America, Inc. that I hope is relaunched later this year in the United States.

We need a workforce that is committed to the company, we need leaders that are focused on long-term success, and we need a new home that is appropriate and logical and makes the most sense for the company.

I am a strong proponent for an aggressive relaunch of Saab Automobile in the United States this year and again, I am committed in assisting in this process in just about any way I can.

1988 SCANIA 112H Oil Truck Review From Massachusetts Company

Posted on 23. Apr, 2009 by .

Saab History has been recently pursuing a research project on the history of SCANIA trucks in the United States. In my research I have realized that there are not too many SCANIA trucks around any longer, so any company that still has them, it is exciting to hear why they bought them, what they like about them and why they continue to drive them today.

As part of this research I have recently come across one of these´in Dedham, Massachusetts, that has owned a 112H since 1988! I sent them a few inquiries back and forth and they have kindly shared with us a writeup and some photographs of their experience with them!

In terms of them thinking about retiring it, I have already gone ahead and contacted Scania USA operating out of texas, relocated from Orange, Connecticut in 1995 to see about helping these folks out!

Here is their piece below:

scania2.jpgThe Scania is a 1988. We decided to make the purchase after seeing them in Europe and reading about them in a trucking magazine. We purchased from Taylor & Loyde in Bedford, MA, shortened the wheel based for proper weigh distribution of our customer tank.

Reasons why we made the purchase: an overall well built nice truck. Great quality and a great ride. The turning radius and visibility are impeccable. It is very easy to get in and out of especially when making 40 oil deliveries in a day.

We continue to run it in our fleet for the above reasons. In speaking with one of our drivers a few weeks ago he stated that “truck #2 is a joy to drive”

I believe Scania left the U.S. in 1994 but I would have to check with my mechanic he has a very good knowledge of the truck. Unfortunately we may be retiring it in a few years because it is getting harder and harder to get parts for it even from Europe. .

The Saab-Scania of America Parts Facility 1987 – 1992

Photo Credit: CH Nickerson Contractors / July, 1987.

I have been going through the Saab history in the United States lately to fill in the gaps in my records and have come across a nice photo recently of the parts facility.

I have fortunately done this research back in 2005 because the administrative assistant, Janet Lozinski who worked with CH Nickerson has now retired and the current one does not know how to access such material. Thanks to Ms. Lozinski at CH Nickerson we have this photo and the history behind it.

It was Saab Cars USA, Inc. that as part of their relocation of facilities from Connecticut, relocated their parts & accessories depot from Meriden, Connecticut which was completed in July of 1987.

Saab History Connecting Former Saab USA Employees

Posted on 10. Mar, 2009 by .

Saab History has been receiving a number of e-mails from former Saab Employees, particularly in the United States trying to re-unite with their fellow colleagues lately, presumably because of the fallout of General Motors and the relaunch of Saab Automobile as a newly independent company along with koenigsegg.

So who would have imagined that the fall of GM, would provide so many people, an opportunity to finally voice their opinions, share their information and provide truly interesting material with regards to Saab history.

All of the former Saab USA employees that worked during the following eras either physically in these offices or satellite offices, are now looking to reunite with one another, which is great.

405 Park Avenue, New York (1956-1961)
100 Waterfront Street New Haven, CT (1961-1971)
60 Marsh Hill Road / 35 Executive Blvd Orange, CT (1972-1992)
Norcross, Georgia (1992-2004)
Renaissance Center, Detroit, Michigan (2004-2009)

As you know, back in 2005, there close to 150 people that gathered in Connecticut for a 1st ever, Saab USA reunion. This year, there is another former employee reunion in Connecticut as well.

It is the work that many of you did that has contributed to Saab’s presence here over the years in the United States and that is why it’s important to celebrate each and every one of your accomplishments. In an effort to make this easy for you, I have placed a permanent contact link for all of you to the left of this site so you know what to look for titled “SAAB Former Employees Click Here”.

Please contact Saab History, if you are a former Saab USA employee looking to connect with another peer or colleague, I will do my very best to get you together.

Happy Holidays From Saab-Scania Of America – 1979

Here’s a nice blast from the past! This is holiday photo from fellow Saab History contributor and former Saab-Scania of America employee, Lavona Buchner.

This photo showcases Bob Sinclair, with Lennart Lonnegren right behind him, as he opens a present during the holiday party held in December of 1979, his first year on the job at Saab-Scania of America, Inc. – 60 Marsh Hill Road in Orange, Connecticut.

Here’s hoping that the folks at Saab Automobile AB find a new owner for their brand in their stocking this holiday season. Finding a new owner, would certainly given the remaining Saab Automobile employees, dealers, staff, etc. something to smile about this season!
