All New Saab 9-5 Sedan: Less Is More with All Turbo Engine Line-up

• Responsible performance with efficient four-cylinder turbo engines
• CO2 values from just 139 g/km
• Three fuel types: gasoline, E85 and diesel in all-turbo line-up

The new 9-5’s all-turbo powertrain line-up brings together Saab expertise in turbocharging with state-of-the-art engine technologies.

With gasoline and BioPower (E85 compatible) engines developing more than 100 hp per liter, the new 9-5 Sedan also advances Saab’s rightsizing powertrain strategy. That means efficient turbocharged engines as small as 1.6 liters can make a fitting partner for Saab’s new premium sedan. With diesel power, CO2 emissions as low as 139 g/km are also on offer. All transmissions are six-speed.

Gasoline choice
All engines feature electronic management, electronic throttle control, direct ignition and four valves per cylinder operated by overhead, maintenance-free, chain-driven camshafts. For longevity and reliability, turbochargers are water-cooled and use air-to-air intercooling to increase intake charge density.

To give minimal piston friction and wear characteristics, while also benefiting fuel and oil consumption, the cylinder walls of the engines are laser-etched for an extremely smooth finish. Under-skirt piston oil cooling and sodium-filled exhaust valves are further efficiency measures.

1.6 Turbo
The engine line-up starts with this powerful four-cylinder motor giving 180 hp/132 kW and excellent torque of 230 Nm all the way from 2,200 rpm to 5,500 rpm. It includes an ‘overboost’ function, which raises torque to 266 Nm for up to five seconds on a wide open throttle.

The Introduction Of The Saab 99 Turbo – 1978

Posted on 19. Aug, 2008 by .

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the first Saab 99 Turbo in 1978, so I believe it is necessary to provide us with as much information about this important milestone for the Saab Automobile brand.

I will begin by providing you summaries from the original press kit here at Saab History that includes content such as photographs, press summaries and drawings of how a Saab Turbo works and what the inspiration was behind it.

Saab Introduces the Power of the Future. The Turbo.

turbopress.jpgThe Saab Turbo is an engineering masterpiece. Saab has taken the turbo power that dominates the big trucks – Le Mans and Indianapolis — and harnessed it to work at speeds you drive at everyday.

The Saab Turbo breakthrough is its ability to deliver 34% more torque at low 3500 rpm’s. More torque at low rpm’s means more power at your command in daily situations. When you have to pass, feel that surge of power shoot you ahead. Feel the take-off thrust of turbo power move you on to a highway. That’s power!

Yet, the Saab Turbo isn’t merely cold, engineering innovations. Its performance as definite psychic compensations. Here’s ow a few of the car experts have responded to driving one.

“Saab now has fetched up a model that’ll get second gear rubber and double the double-nickel any day of the week…Saab’s Turbo installation offers more pleasure per dollar than any other on the market” – Pat Bedard, Car & Driver

“One heroic blast down the highway is enough to convert anybody” – David E. Davis Jr., Car & Driver

“Saab Turbo… a genuine Fourth-of-July driving experience, full of sudden pleasure and high spirit..” – Steve Thompson, Car & Driver

“The Saab Turbo is exhiliarating to drive..it’s so much fun, the price is irrelevant…” – Road & Track

GM’s CEO Rick Wagoner Says Saab Is Here To Stay

Posted on 17. Aug, 2008 by .

CNN Money reports today that GM’s CEO, Rick Wagoner says that Saab is here to stay, for Niche Markets.

I guess this statement is comforting, but we really need to see some “rightsized” hybrid fuel-efficient non-conceptual “production vehicles” right now!

Here is the brief statement made by Rick Wagoner at a recent event in Thailand.

GM’s Wagoner: Will Keep Saab Brand, Useful For Niche Markets

BANGKOK -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp. (GM) plans to keep the Saab brand in the “GM family” as it can be used to penetrate niche markets, president and chairman Richard Wagoner said Wednesday.

The Saab sales strategy will focus on the European market, he said at an event marking GM’s $445 million investment in a diesel engine plant and assembly plant upgrade in Thailand.

Posted on 23. Jul, 2008 by .

This just in from Saab Automobile’s Global Communications channel. It appears that the Saab BioPower products, are now included in the Aero lineup which comes with XWD and eLSD. This has got to be the most incredible performance package short of the Saab 9-3 Turbo-X. I would be interested in seeing a detailed line by line comparitive.

Here is the press release below:

Model Year 2009 range:

Saab BioPower Boost for top-of-the-line Aero Range

Celebrating Saab’s unique aircraft heritage, its Aero performance range is expanded for Model Year 2009 to include BioPower, as well as a turbo diesel and gasoline engine options.

Saab leads the automotive sector in exploiting the environmental benefits of bioethanol as a renewable fuel for its BioPower flex-fuel engines, which also deliver more power when running on E85 (85% bioethanol,15% gasoline). Now this technology is available for the first time in Aero specification for both 9-3 and 9-5 product ranges.

The new 9-3 Aero BioPower, in Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible formats, has a 2.0-liter turbo engine delivering 14% more maximum power (200 hp/ 147 kW.v 175 hp/ 129 kW) and 13% more torque (300 v 265 Nm) when running on E85. In the Sport Sedan, this gives zero to 100 kph acceleration in 7.9 sec and 80 to 120 kph in fifth gear in 10.0sec, compared to 8.5 and 11.1 sec, respectively, on gasoline.

In the 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi line-up, the 2.3-turbo engine of the new Aero BioPower delivers maximum power of 210 hp/154 kW and 310 Nm of torque when running on E85, compared to 185 hp/136 kW and 280 Nm on gasoline. On the road, this gives the sedan zero to 100 kph acceleration in 7.9 sec and 80-120 kph in fifth gear in 11.0 sec, compared to 8.3 sec and 12.6 sec, respectively, on gasoline.

Saab Aero models are distinguished by exterior sports bodystyling, unique alloy wheels and a sports chassis with stiffer springs and dampers for sharper handling. Inside, the sports seating is complemented by metallic-effect trim and the option of a unique leather/aluminum steering wheel.

For model year 2009, the full Saab 9-3 Aero line-up now offers a choice of front or all-wheel-drive (Saab XWD) combined with 280 hp, 2.8V6 or 210 hp, 2.0-liter four- cylinder turbo power. In addition, the new Aero BioPower and current 180 hp, 1.9TTiD engines come with front wheel drive only.
In the 9-5 range, the new BioPower option joins the current 260 hp, 2.3-liter gasoline version, which includes an overboost function delivering an impressive 370 Nm of torque.
