Saab BioPower Promotes Alternative Fuels with Queensland Government

Building awareness for the importance of alternative fuels, Saab has provided a BioPower 9-3 SportCombi to the Queensland Government to use as a promotional vehicle for a 12 month period.

Promoting ethanol blended fuels and environmentally friendly vehicles, Saab and the Queensland Government will be a central highlight of Australia’s largest free green festival, Greenfest 2009, in June.

Saab History Interviews Mats Hilmersson, Director of Hybrid Engineering At Saab Automobile AB

Posted on 24. Mar, 2009 by .

I have recently interviewed Mats Hilmersson, Director of Hybrid Engineering at Saab Automobile AB with some quick questions about what he does and what’s going on within the hybrid engineering department.

His succinct response about the future of hybrid engineering at Saab Automobile helps us think about the future, following the previous information from the former director Mats Reimark.

A thank you to Mats Hilmersson for his time in sharing a bit about his role and the future of Hybrid Engineering at Saab Automobile AB.

Saab History: How and when did you start working at Saab Automobile AB?

Mats Hilmersson: January 1998. Engine development.

Saab History: What you currently do for Saab Automobile AB when it comes to Hybrid Development & Engineering?

Mats Hilmersson: I’m the department manager for Hybrid Engineering at GM Powertrain Sweden AB.

Saab History: What hybrid projects are you working on, what and when would we expect to see them?

Mats Hilmersson: We do Pre-Development engineering activities within GM Powertrain’s hybrid pre-development projects. We work with different variants of GM’s exisiting technology and the next generation of hybrid systems. Concerning expectations regarding projects to the market I have to refer to the GM Information department.

Saab History: What kind of inspiration and positive news can you provide my readers about the future of Saab Hybrid products?

Mats Hilmersson: Saab will meet customer expectations regarding the future hybrid roll out. Saab is dedicated to the Responsible Performance statement and that includes a clear step towards next generation powertrains where the hybrid variants are vital. I’m confident that Saab will convince, I know it, since I’m in the middle of the technology development.

Saab History: Anything else you would like to share with the readers on Saab History?

Mats Hilmersson:
It’s interesting to see the trends in the industry slowly turning towards the traditional Saab value down-sized engines with supercharging in order to reduce engine friction losses and thus reduce fuel consumption. It’s good to be able to stay on a winning path rather than having to change to it. The downsizing and hybridization works very well together, good for us!

I look forward to your response and thank you for your responses.

The Saab Automobile AB Management Board

Posted on 19. Feb, 2009 by .

The Saab Automobile AB Management board are deciding Saab’s future in their discussions with General Motors & the Swedish Government. I am interested in what became of the meeting because those results would presumably set the direction for Saab’s process towards financial as well as organizational independence from General Motors.

cph.jpgThe individuals that this board consist of their chairman, Carl-Peter Forster as well as the rest of the management board of Saab Automobile AB.

I am wondering if Percy Barnevik who resigned from GM’s Management board earlier this month, is a consultant to this board now or is he totally retired?

In the meantime, here is the Management Board for your reference.

GM Had Discussions With KIA Over Saab Automobile Brand

Posted on 12. Feb, 2009 by .

According to Reuters, executives of KIA, have been having discussions with GM over the Saab premium brand.

Since this is the first source that have indicated this, I really have no idea what to say. I know Reuters is a fairly credible source than say Automotive News, so I wonder what else we’ll hear of this. I guess we’ll find out on Super Tuesday, the 17th of February?

Executives of Kia, led by Kia President Eui-sun Chung, have had discussions with GM over the Saab premium brand, three sources with knowledge of the talks said.

I think Kia’s North American tagline “the power to surprise” is an understatement, because I am certainly surprised that GM has been having talks with KIA about Saab.

However, if KIA does end up becoming the new owner for Saab Automobile, and Saab Automobile’s business plans for loans for a Sweden-based company come through, then all I ask is that KIA just invest and take a completely hands-off approach from the brand.

Here is KIA’s response to this rumor:

Subject: RE: KIA To Buy Saab Automobile AB?
Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 08:26:55 -0800

That’s an old rumor that has been dug up and re-circulated and is pure

Saab Automobile AB On Meetings in Trollhättan, Sweden

Posted on 06. Nov, 2008 by .

Today, Eric Geers of Saab Automobile AB, whom I’ve interviewed this past January in Detroit, has responded to my inquiry about the meetings that are taking place this week in Trollhättan, Sweden.

He has given me permission to publish his response here for us to see. While I thank him for his response, I am concerned about what he wrote in last sentence about “hoping to show some of the new products next year”. It appears to be implied that there is a chance that these new products (ie. 9-4x, 9-5 NG, and 9-3XC) won’t be shown next year, which is scary to think.

Well, there are always important meetings taking place but nothing that would stand out. Perhaps your source was referring to the GM Quarterly broadcast that is planned for tomorrow, but thats a global one that we will view here in Sweden.

Other than that we continue to focus on what we have ahead of us in terms of products and we hope to be able to show some of it next year!
