Trollhättan, Sweden Celebrates “Saab Days” July 17-19

Trollhättan, Sweden will be celebrating what is known as “Saab Days” on June 17th-19th, 2009. This event will not be an official Saab Festival like 2007, but more of a club organized event.

However, Saab Automobile and the Saab Car Museum will help support it says Peter Backstrom, curator of the Saab Car Museum in his e-mail to Saab History below:

Hello Ryan!

The Saab days is an initiative from the Swedish Saab Club, Saab Turbo Club of Sweden and Club Sonett Sweden. It will take place July 17-19 in Trollhättan. I will be coordinated with the Fallens dagar Festival and the Midnight Sun rally.

For more information about the event itself, see the clubs websites. They would like to point out that it will not be an event with the same level like the Saabfestival, But I am convinced that it will be worthwhile for international visitors to book tickets!

I have good reasons to believe that you already have made the conclusion that it will be no official Saabfestival 2009. Although we are not organizing “Saabens dagar” we will of course support it as much as we can from Saab Automobile / Saab Car Museums side.

The Midnight Sun Rally will have a overnight rest at the Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan between Friday & Saturday and a total of 180 cars will participate. Among them around 40 Saabs from 2-stroker to V4:s and 99 turbos. Driven flat out! with 2 special stages around Trollhättan. See www.midnattsolrallyt.com for more info.

That all I have right now!

Saab History – Year In Review

Posted on 18. Dec, 2008 by .

1

Saab History celebrates it’s second full year since it officially launched this website in the fall of 2006.

As you may know, Saab History is still an independently founded and managed grassroots awareness campaign that in the form of a promotional website. The objective of this ongoing project is to educate people through the viewing of the history of Saab through written, photographic and audio/ visual content consisting of Saab Automobile’s past and present and future.

This year in review marks the second year anniversary for Saab History, following the first year in review I posted back on December 18th, 2007, exactly one year ago.

As you will see below, we continue to see a number of significant milestones that Saab History has made possible.

content.jpg

A lot of more material has been gathered over the year since Saab History officially took formal internet presence and here are the current statistics:

These include 2,500 content rich posts, nearly 450 videos in the Saab Film Archive, 60 finely crafted and detailed scale models, 40 books in the Saab Book library, nearly 60 Saab magazines with over 30 Saab soundings that can be downloaded in electronic format in the Saab Magazine archive, 14 Saab Accessory Catalogs that can also be downloaded, and an ever growing archives section dating back to 1947, the year SAAB began as an automobile manufacturer.

I have even launched a services section for parties interested in taking advantage of my abilities. Secondly, there is also a products section reflecting the Saab History t-shirt program that began around the middle part of the year.

While this year is hard to compare to last year’s “launch” year for the site, also being the 60th anniversary year, it has developed substantially in terms of content and in the past month. As of this week, the site statistics for visitors alone have grown more than double of what they were in the beginning of the year due to switching to a new hosting server! Now that is incredible!

sponsors.jpg

Saab History has also been fortunate to have received support in the form of site sponsorship from 6 Saab dealerships, 2 Independent Saab Garages and 1 Saab Parts & Accessories vendor over the course of this year.

Saab History urges more site supporters to join these sponsors that get substantial advertising, in order to keep the site up and running for next year as this is currently the only financial mechanism ensuring the continued success of the site.

A strong thank you goes to my advertisers for making this site’s presence financially possible.

This advertisers / site sponsors are as follows in the following order of first come, first serve.

New Salem Saab – Albany, New York

Saab Colorado Inc – Denver, Colorado

Swedish Motor Cars – Washington, D.C.

Cherry Hill Saab – Cherry Hill, New Jersey

JMK Saab – Springfield, NJ

Herb Chambers Saab – Boston, MA

Shaw Saab – Norwell, MA

Saab USA Parts – Boston, MA

Jim Ellis Saab – Atlanta, Georgia

Saab Film Project

The first area of focus that Saab History continues to tirelessly work on is the Saab Film Project, formerly Saab Videos.

The Saab Film Project is an effort within Saabhistory.com to assist in the preserving and transferring of any films old and new to digital format for the record. Over the past few years, a number of films have been donated to Saabhistory and with that, these films with the help of donations from Saab Enthusiasts worldwide, have contributed to the successful professional processing of such films from analog to digital format.

It is expected that as more films surface and various phases continue to be built upon, this project will continue to serve as a platform in this film conversion process and thus will be permanently designated as a work in progress.

Saab History thanks everyone who has contributed to this effort, but this ongoing effort is far from over, but now the material is getting harder and harder to obtain.

Saab Automobile’s history is an incredible one that keeps getting better each day and without a centralized source for all of this material, it will be hard to track and maintain and properly archive it for generations to come.

This is why I launched Saabvideos as well as Saabhistory.com, and I hope to keep this service going as long as it is possible.

The 1992 Saab 900 Turbo Project

900tp.jpg

In December, 2007 my Wife and I acquired a 1992 Saab 900 Turbo that was in rough shape, and thanks to a some colleagues of mine, both JG Service and Granite Embedded, we managed to full restore the vehicle to great working order inside and out.

Over the course of nearly 9 months, the Saab 900 Turbo Project was complete, just in time for the 2008 Saab Owners Convention in Devens, Massachusetts.

The Lost Dealerships Of New England Project

There have been a number of Saab dealerships over the years closing up shop for one reason or another and I thought out of respect for the efforts that took place at these dealerships, the people that gave their time, they needed a respectable place in which to reflect their presence.

The Lost Dealerships of New England project was my idea in an attempt to meet this obective.

While there are stil a significant amount of Saab dealerships that existed over the years that are no longer in business, it is my hope that the community at-large will contribute material proving these dealership’s whereabouts along with all the necessary supporting documentation such as photographs, dates, times, etc.

events.jpg

Over the past year there have been many exciting events, activities, launches and other venues that Saabhistory has participated in or been involved in one way or another. I have provided you a brief taste of some of the higher points for your enjoyment below:

General Motors Announces The Plan to Sell Saab

Saab History urged General Motors to sell Saab
, and during this month they have indicated that Saab is not part of their future, and they have already begun shopping for a buyer for the brand, beginning a new era for Saab Automobile AB.

—–

Saab History had an eventful second year and internally speculated that General Motors would plan to sell Saab by 2009, and was right!

As you can see, it was quite an interesting year where things got off to an excellent start, however it’s almost as though everything did a 180 degree turn systematically, in the last 6-months.

I was initially concerned about the end of the year for Saab Automobile, but I trust that the brand has a bright future, depending on the ideals and intelligence that the new owner brings to the table.

In just the last month as started, especially since moving to a new server, this website has been increasingly growing in terms of visibility on a global scale, so much so that the e-mails that I have been receiving have been simply, overwhelming. However, I am up to the task as always and continue to be interested in Saab’s future, now that the preparations are being made for a 4th era, for Saab Automobile.

As always, I enjoy your visits, contributions and insight and look forward seeing more of you in the new year as I continue to update this website for more news and information spanning the past, present and future for the Saab brand.

Thank you again for your encouragement and I urge you to help support this site in any way you can to ensure that 2009 continues the success of this independent effort in preserving Saab Automobile’s History in the making.

Saab Car Show in Frankfurt, Germany – Photos

The folks from Saab Automobile Germany and the local dealership in Frankfurt that hosted the classic Saab car show this past weekend, have provided Saab History photos of the event.

As you can see with the photos, there were a number of vehicles present, by local Saab Enthusiasts in Germany as well as Switzerland. On hand, was Peter Backstrom, curator of the Saab Car Museum in Sweden as well as Andrew Dyson, Saab designer at GM Europe.

During the event there was live music provided by Swedish singer Pia Fridhill, and even a live demonstration of a Saab 99 restoration by a master technician at the Saab Zentrum Frankfurt.

Evidently, there was even a parts market, books on hand in addition to model cars and tv clips showing vintage Saabs in action.

Overall, it looks like it was a great time had by all that were in attendance.

REFINEMENTS MARK 1976 SAAB MODELS

REFINEMENTS MARK 1976 SAAB MODELS

ORANGE, CONNECTICUT — More than 40 engineering refinements mark the new line of Swedish-built Saab automobiles for 1976. The refinements are as complex as new rear brake caliper pistons and as simple as a pushbutton trip odometer.

For 1976, the Saab 99’s are available in three basic models: The Saab 99 GL, available in two and four door models with optional automatic transmission and power steering; Saab 99 EMS, with an improved performance package, again available in the two door configuration; and the Saab 99 WagonBack, introduced in 1974, which provides the flexibility of a sedan with the convenience of a station wagon.

THE POWER

All three models use a Swedish-built Saab 2-liter engine. The 121.1 cubic inch (1985 cc) engine delivers 115 horsepower (SAE net) and 123 ft./lbs. of torque in the Federal version. The Bosch Continuous Fuel Injection System is used as is an on-off exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) on Federal cars equipped with automatic transmission. For California, Arizona and Nevada, the Saab 99 utilizes proportional EGR and an air pump for exhaust manifold air injection. These cars offer 110 SAE net horsepower with 119 ft./lbs. of torque. These are the same systems as employed on all 1975 Saabs.

As in 1975, all Saab automobiles, even those conforming to the strict California requirements, are able to run on any regular leaded or un- leaded fuel. This is due to the absence of any catalytic converter.

ON THE INSIDE

On the inside of the new 1976 Saab 99 GL, refinements include an electric rear window defroster to augment the present hot air system, providing excellent rear window clearing even on the worst winter days.

The Saab luggage compartment has been covered with a durable, low pile, nylon carpet in Manila Brown, which is fastened to the floor to prevent sliding. The sides of the compartment are finished in a matching Manila Brown fiber board.

Steel door sill plates are coated with a flat black plastic material for extra durability. For 1976, carpeting is installed, at the factory, to insure better fit and quality control.

Color has always played an important role in the designing and planning of Saab automobiles. For 1976 there has even been a change in the low fuel warning lights, to orange, for better visibility. Reducing the glare from the instrument panel has been achieved by redesigning another light indicator, that for the high beams.

A new gas filler pipe and cap have also been installed on the 1976 Saab models. In addition, a special safety valve helps prevent fuel leakage in the event of a roll-over. Should a roll-over occur, it is reassuring to know that Saab’s built-in roll cage construction, a sort of steel cage, will protect the passengers by maintaining the integrity of the passenger compartment.

THE OUTSIDE

Saab has made few changes to the actual “skin” of the new 1976 Saab 99’s. In fact, the basic design has not been altered since its introduction in 1969. But, there have been refinements. For 1976, a new body side molding will be standard. It is black, with a thin white accent stripe. The molding is also wider than in previous years. The WagonBack’s rear door has a strap handle to facilitate its closing.

UNDER THE HOOD

There are a number of major improvements under the hood of each new 1976 Saab 99, including a new clutch slave cylinder which works directly on the throwout bearing, and the brake calipers have been fitted with larger pistons to improve the performance of the rear braking system.

For 1976, all Saab automobiles also use larger springs which will improve the riding comfort. And, each front-wheel-drive Saab rides on wider 5 inch wheels, with steel belted radial tires.

EMS

The Saab most affected by refinements for 1976 is the EMS. The performance car from Saab is now even more of a performer with an air spoiler of black molded plastic in the front, Bilstein gas filled shock absorbers for improved handling and Pirelli CN-36 175/70 HR15 tires for even better traction and road holding.

COLOR

Two new colors, Topaz Yellow and Spring Green, join Coral White, Solar Red, Sienna Brown and Carolina Blue as colors for the Saab 99 GL series. The Saab 99 EMS will still be available in either Sterling Silver Metallic or Black, both with contrasting racing stripe. Because paint, even the paint on a 1976 Saab can chip, a Saab “lacquer Pin” touch up paint set will be included with each tool kit. And, for those who want to let the sun shine in, the Saab 99 EMS will be available with an optional sun roof. Other options include AM/FM stereo radio with tape player, air conditioning and automatic transmission with power steering (except on EMS).

All the Saab models are available at more than 375 Saab dealers nationwide
