The "Save Saab" Event In Jacksonville, Florida

Posted on 24. Jan, 2010 by .

The North East Florida Saab Club in Jacksonville held a “SAVE SAAB” event on Saturday.

This was interesting location in Jacksonville, Florida, given it was one of Saab’s first ports in the United States besides Hingham, Massachusetts, starting in 1959.

They had a decent turnout as you can see in the photo. For more photos, please visit this link.

For the past few years, the former Saab Automobile USA organization partnered with USA Networks on the Miami, Florida based “Burn Notice” television series.

This series included a 2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible in black for Fiona, one of the leading characters in the film. This arrangement was managed by former Saab Automobile USA Advertising & Promotions Manager, Steven Haener.

The following film has been recently located that provides you a behind-the-scenes look at the Saab 9-3 Aero convertible being filmed in high-speed chase scenes in addition to some of the details as to why Saab partners with USA Networks in Burn Notice to begin with.

I quick look at the official Burn Notice website results in no current details as to the continued partnership with Saab in the United States now that they are a new organization with new leadership.

Today, the all new Saab 9-5 made its North American debut at the Miami Auto Show in Florida.

Saab History’s architect/Saab enthusiast Bruce W. was kind enough to attend the event and take photographs for us for those that could not make it to the event.

There were approximately 50 people in attendance, quite smaller than the global debut last month in Frankfurt. The mood was upbeat and the presentation was much better than any other automobile manufacturers at the show.

For Sale: 1992 Saab 900 Turbo 5-Speed 3-Door Hatchback.

This is as classic as it gets for the Saab 900, it’s a second to the last year of the classic Saab 900 Hatchback.

This Saab has no rust as it has been in Florida & Virginia it’s whole life until I transported it to Maine in 2008 directly to an indoor storage facility.

Since it has been up here, it has been driven once a month in the spring, summer and fall only, every few months since the restoration was completed in August of 2008. It is been started up every month and run for 20 minutes in the winter season while in the storage facility (with the door open of course).

Saab Of Vero Beach, Florida Dealership Ends Saab Business

I have just been made aware of the fact that Saab of Vero Beach, Florida have officially stopped selling the Saab Automobile brand since this past weekend.

Evidently, they were a sponsor of the Saab Owners Convention back when it took place in Vero Beach back in 2001.

I placed a phonecall into their dealership and the receptionist did confirm this, however a transfer to their general sales manager for more details did not yield any further details.

As of this posting, this brings the total Saab dealerships in the United States down to 226, and the exclusives to 77.

Saab History Interviewed & Featured By Bloomberg News

Posted on 18. Feb, 2009 by .

This past Tuesday morning, I was asked by Bloomberg New for an interview, in which I happily accepted. Today, Bloomberg News Sweden has included me in their coverage of the recent decision by General Motors to be done with the Saab Automobile brand.

A thank you to Bloomberg News for the interview and featuring me and my website on their website today. It was nice to get a mention like that in the opening line of their article!

Here is the full interview summarized in quotes that did not make it into the article for your further reference:

Ryan Emge was first introduced to the Saab Automobile brand by the only independent mechanic, a Swede, in his small hometown of New Salem in western Massachusetts when he was 16. It was love at first sight.

“He told me that there is a responsibility in having a car like this and offered me to come work for him a few days a week to learn how well-built the vehicle was,” Emge, now 30, said. “That taught me to appreciate the safety and engineering and all other brand pillars that Saab stands for and I have been carrying the Saab torch since. I was bitten by the Saab bug.”

`A closure would effectively end more than 60 years of uniquely Swedish innovations, engineering and significant contributions to the automotive industry as a whole,” Emge, said. “Not only will there be an economic void of monumental proportions, there will also be a total loss of national pride and identity for the country of Sweden.”

“I would be devastated and sad to see Saab go,” Emge said. “It wouldn’t just be a huge blow to Sweden, it would be a blow to the U.S. too. We’re one of the only countries left in the world that still has dealers that are exclusive to Saab and there are a lot of people here who love and want to keep their Saabs.”

“Saab is a bi-product of Sweden’s culture and ideals — infrastructure, safety and a focus on education and nature,” Emge said. “I want to be safe with my family and I am aligned with a brand that shares those values. Sweden’s ideals are aligned with Saab’s.’

Saab Fans Brace for Worst as GM Threatens to Let Brand Go Under

By Niklas Magnusson and Chad Thomas

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) — Saab Automobile fans are bracing for the day the Swedish carmaker stops running on enthusiasm alone.

“I would be devastated and sad to see Saab go,” said Ryan Emge, 30, who runs a Web site for Saab aficionados and bought his first Saab in 1995 after a Swedish mechanic in New Salem, Massachusetts, introduced him to the brand. “There are a lot of people here who love and want to keep their Saabs.”

The six-decade love affair between Saab and car drivers is being tested after General Motors Corp. said late yesterday it wants to dump the unit following two decades of unprofitable ownership. Sweden’s government today ruled out a takeover of the country’s second-largest carmaker and said no buyer is in sight, casting doubt over a brand that enjoys a global cult following.

At stake is the future of about 4,500 workers at Saab’s Trollhaettan factory in southern Sweden, as well as thousands of jobs at regional suppliers. A breakdown of Saab would hurt a network of exclusive Saab car dealers in the U.S. and the U.K., and end decades of automotive innovation that spawned features such as side-impact protection or turbo-charged engines.

Saab Automobile Opportunity : Partnering with L.L. Bean

Posted on 08. Sep, 2008 by .

As a continuation of my series on “Saab Opportunities“, I have shared with you the big missed opportunity in the United States for Saab Automobile back in 2003, which was to partner with the Red Sox, but that’s now in the past.

In addition, I have also spent my own time and energy with the help of the folks at Okemo Mountain Resort in Okemo, Vermont this past March to emphasize their partnership opportunities at their resort, where Saab Automobile USA used to be a car sponsor. In addition, I’ve worked with Cold Brook Saab in Skowhegan, Maine along with Sunday River Ski resort to showcase their long standing partnership as well.

This time around, while also emphasizing the previous partnership opportunities, I am also seeing another opportunity, in addition to, with the Saab 9-3X Cross-Combi at L.L. Bean, headquarted in Freeport, Maine during a recent trip this past weekend.

This idea of mine has to do with Saab Automobile partnering with L.L. Bean as Subaru has been doing for the past 8 years, by not only making a special “L.L. Bean Edition” Saab 9-3X Cross-Combi model complete with Thule Box on top, but a full-on partnership. The timing is better than perfect, as the L.L. Bean & Subaru partnership has just ended in June this year which means they may be open to a new automobile sponsor.

Here’s some of the reasons why a partnership like this makes sense for Saab Automobile USA.

  • The 9-3X Cross-Combi will be a direct competitor to the Subaru Outback AWD, which could be an easier partnership idea given L.L. Bean’s positive experiences with Subaru.
  • The Saab 9-3X Cross-Combi has a much better system called Cross-Wheel Drive (XWD), and needs all of the exposure it can get in the home market (New England).
  • The region in Freeport, Maine (L.L.Bean headquarters) is a major tourist attraction in the North Eastern New England region of the United States and would have a significant amount of annual traffic with numerous Saab dealerships nearby with product placement of the Saab 9-3 Cross-Combi.
  • The “active” lifestyles in this geographic region would liken to a renewed entry to this adventurous outdoor market with a Saab that can outdo what their tired Subarus, Volvos and Audis can do, but more efficient, safer and less expensive and a lot more fun to drive!
  • If that’s not enough, Saab used to advertise in this area during their “we don’t make compromises, we make saabs” campaign in 1991, so let’s bring Saab back, where a partnership with L.L.Bean would certainly be mutually beneficial and another logical step at renewing ties to the most signicant market in the United States.

Watch segments 1:24 and 3:49 to see the Saab 900 and 9000s promoted in front of the L.L. Bean headquarters in Freeport, Maine in this 1991 promotional video for proof.
