Historic Saab 93 on Show at Geneva en route to Mille Miglia

· Unique heritage: Saab celebrates first major international rally success
· Historic recreation: Saab and Spyker CEOs to run Saab 93s in 2010 Mille Miglia

Saab is celebrating its first major victory in international motor sport by showing a replica of the Saab 93 sedan which won the Finnish 1,000 Lakes Rally in 1957.

With Erik ‘Mr Saab’ Carlsson at the wheel, this historic victory brought international recognition for the Saab brand. It also presaged back-to-back Monte Carlo and a hat-trick of RAC Rally victories that Carlsson would achieve in the early 1960s.

Powered by a 748 cc, three cylinder engine, but weighing only 810 kilos, the Saab 93’s agile handling enabled it to embarrass far more powerful, larger cars. It established a winning ‘David beats Goliath’ formula that was to be a cornerstone of Saab’s rallying success.

mullerThe Saab 93 is now about to see competition action again. The car on show – from Saab’s car museum in Trollhättan, Sweden – will be driven by Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller on Italy’s historic Mille Miglia road race in May. He will be joined by Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson at the wheel of another Saab 93. Both will be following, at a more leisurely pace, in the wheel tracks of the 1000 Lakes winner, which won its class on the same event back in 1957.

“Unique cars like the 93 are a key part of the Saab brand’s wonderful heritage,” said Victor Muller “I shall enjoy driving it and being able to share in some of Saab’s history.”

Between 1955 and 1960, 52.731 Saab 93s were built at Trollhättan. Its frontal styling introduced a new face for Saab, carried forward by the 96 sedan and 95 station wagon which stayed in production until 1980.

Saab 9-3 TX Edition & New Concept Car At Geneva Show?

Saab History has recently learned from the folks at the Geneva Motor Show that while the Saab stand will have products we know and recognize, Saab 9-3x, all new Saab 9-5, it’s supposed to also have the Saab 9-3 TX edition as well as a concept car?

Anyone have any guesses as to what this concept car could be? I’ve tried contacting Saab Switzerland to no avail: I wonder if this is entirely accurate? It’s showing on their website, so maybe it’s a surprise? I would like some clarification from Saab on this, if they are reading this post.

Here’s what Saab History has recently learned from Dimitri in Switzerland, who will be kindly providing photographs for us at the event.

This is the only information we have from the Geneva Salon website:

Saab Automobile will be holding a press conference at the Geneva Motor Show on March 2nd at 3:15pm.

It would seem obvious that they will be using the conference to showcase their new ownership as there won’t be any new product launches.

Saab History actually already received a press pass for the conference from the event coordinators at the show, but will not be attending the event due to real needs and costs.

If you are you going to the show, please let Saab History know, because even our European correspondent, Etienne won’t be making it this year either due to the same reasons.

This year was a first for Saab History where I finally got the chance to meet up with Etienne from Belgium. Etienne as many of you know, has been Saab History’s correspondent for the past two years with photographs back to back in 2007 and 2008 in both Geneva & Frankfurt.

So please enjoy the photographs from both Etienne & Saab History showcasing not only the new 9-5, but the Saab stand and the personalities that are part of Saab’s new era.

A thanks again to Tynan’s Saab & JMK Saab for ensuring Saab History attended this milestone event for Saab’s History.

Saab History’s European Correspondent, Etienne, who covered the Saab 9-3x launch in Geneva earlier this year, is at it again, this time covering the Saab Days event in Trollhattan, Sweden. Etienne will be covering this event through his flickr photo account and his blog for us, so please check them out!

Saab Days will run from Friday, July 17th until Sunday the 19th. This event will not be an official Saab Festival like 2007, but more of a club organized event.

However, Saab Automobile and the Saab Car Museum will help support it says Peter Backstrom, curator of the Saab Car Museum in his e-mail to Saab History below:
