At the recent 2009 Saab Owners Convention, Mike Shaw Saab of Denver, Colorado provided Saab History a 2009 Saab 9-3 2.0T Convertible in lynx yellow.

The lynx yellow, has a rather historical reference to an earlier Saab 900 Convertible, depicted back in 1991 in “Monte Carlo Yellow”. This throwback color now available in a modern Saab, brings not only the ability for it to stand out amongst the crowd as one of the most identical brands on the road, it now has the best safety as exhibited by the IIHS crash tests to date. The Saab 9-3 Lynx Yellow Edition Convertible began in 2008, and although the Lynx package including spoiler and other amenities were not continued in 2009, the color and wheels were.

I arrived at the dealership on Friday afternoon with my colleague, a former Saab USA employee, where we were greeted by a friendly staff. Making our way over to the convertible, we managed to get two full sets of luggage into the vehicle rather comfortably, as we began to embark on our trip up to the mountains, two hours West of Denver.

As we climbed the intimidating mountains through the rather twisty hillside up and down alongside the river, I was impressed by the braking and the handling on the 17″ wheels that were outfitted as standard and felt rather comfortable as a result. It was a nice feeling given that there were many noticeable runaway truck routes just about every corner, that I could pass by without considering. As we gained more and more altitude, the temperatures began to drop significantly and the impending cloud covers finally unleashed the rain. At this time, there was a decision to make, which recalled a memory of an individual I met approximately 5 years ago at the 2005 Saab Owners Convention in Stratton, Vermont who had a similar encounter with his convertible in the rain as he headed to that convention. That individual, who took the once offered,European Delivery on his 2004 Saab 9-3 Convertible, told me that he never needed to “raise the roof” in order to prevent rain in the cabin just as long as you maintain the proper course and speed. I took this suggestion as we maintained the proper speed limits from Denver to Copper Mountain and never encountered any rain in the cockpit as I had hoped. It was quite an interesting feeling with the cold air and rain around you, uncovered yet extremely comfortable. I have to admit, I did wear a fleece and did turn on the multilevel seat heater a few times probably just by habit not that it was necessary, it just added to already good driving experience.

The driving experience with this Saab 9-3 Convertible seemed to be best represent what a truly wrap-around windscreen was all about with the side windows also up and the top down. As a result of this, I was very much in tune with the natural surroundings much more than I would have been in any other Saab model to date including my 1992 Saab 900 3-door hatchback. Furthermore, the lynx yellow much like the previous colors in the convertible, both electric blue and lime green certainly help all other driver’s sense of awareness of you and your car, maintaining more safety for you as a driver. I must say that although some look at the colors as merely something to satisfy a visual aesthetic, I look at it as analogous to Saab Safety.

When it came to the ability to pass and climb at high altitudes, the right-sized 2.0T 4-cylinder turbocharged engine provided 210 horsepower and 221 foot pounds of torque at only 2500rpm making everything effortless allowing you to focus on the fun of driving, nothing else.

I recall reading in Nines Magazine back in 2006 when the modern Saab 9-3 convertible had it’s 20th anniversary, that Bob Sinclair, the founder of the convertible, was proud of how it has evolved into it’s current form, which began back in 1984 when the first prototype debuted.

The 2009 Saab 9-3 Convertible continues to be built in Graz, Austria since 2004, which was previously built in Uusikaupunki, Finland. Both facilities, have maintained some of the historically best built qualities in the world and the Saab 9-3 convertible built today, reinforces that statistic.

This test drive was my first in a modern 9-3 convertible, and it certainly won’t be my last. A special thanks goes to Mike Shaw Saab for the opportunity.
