Chapter One

I received the Craigslist ad from a friend on Friday night, even before I saw it on the Vintage Saab list, where it had also been posted. The ad said that the 1962 Saab, had been parked in this garage by a little old lady in 1978, and that it had sat there ever since. The ad confessed that the engine was stuck, and that the rest of the car’s condition was unknown, but the photos made it look fairly derelict, with all of the dust and debris which had collected on it for those thirty-three years.

Everyone on the Vintage Saab list had speculated that thirty-three years in a dark, damp New Jersey garage could not have done it well, and that between the salt air, and the obvious mice infestation, it was probably a fairly rusty candidate for restoration.

Swedish Government’s Mona Sahlin Expresses Support For Saab Automobile AB

The Swedish Government’s leader of the Social Democratic party Mona Sahlin, our friend and support of Saab Automobile who rallied in the streets of Trollhattan back in February, is rallying again for the success of the company.

This continues to show that the Swedish Government is still split on supporting Saab Automobile until a new buyer comes along.

Here is the piece below from TTELA.

Published March 19, 2009 Updated March 19, 2009

Mona Sahlin is consistent with Trollhättans commissioner Gert-Inge Andersson (S) – Swedish automotive industry has a future and Saab is an important part of it. In addition to the visit at car plant did Sahlin to meet trade union and political representatives and to see the stadium construction in Vänersborg.

Mona Sahlin will give Saab a chance

TROLLHÄTTAN / VÄNERSBORG once was Mona Sahlin on the ground in the crisis, Trollhättan and once again was the message:

– Give Saab a chance.

The opposition leader believes in the car industry’s future and recommend measures in the form of loan guarantees and scrapping premium.

The day began with a visit to the Arena Vänersborg.

– Very Exciting, great and otherwise, was the verdict from Mona Sahlin.

She looked forward to coming back and look at bandy at a later date.

But it was not building an arena that was the main reason for opposition leaders Sahlins visit in Trollhättan and Vänersborg. The afternoon she declined to even visit Saab and talks with both unions and CEO Jan-Åke Jonsson.

Criticism of Government and Enterprise Minister Maud Olofsson’s handling of the situation persists.

– If I had been responsible, I had said I think that Saab has a future. Europe needs to buy more cars.

Mona Sahlin, the return that she believes in the business plan. And that the State should provide loan guarantees and the introduction of a scrapping premium to help Saab to survive until they found a long-term owner.

– If Saab is lost, it costs taxpayers a lot more than to give Saab a chance.

Swedish car industry’s future lies as Mona Sahlin in the development of cars in the fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly segment. And the fight is about so much more than just jobs in the car. Pins Sweden automotive industry disappears skills could fertilize other industries.

At Volvo, the union accepted the reduced working hours with reduced pay in the fight for jobs. Mona Sahlin did not want to take away from that method.
– State evade responsibility, while the union is fighting for. It occurs in the absence of a strong a-cash. I read not metal for this, I read the government.

Yesterday’s visit coincided with the publication of a survey done by Synovate. The show declining confidence in the leader, but said to take the figures.
– There are polling numbers, and there are real numbers.

With real figures were she, for example, the unemployment statistics.
– The government has options to show that you can manage the job crisis while also having the voters’ confidence.

Trollhättan, Sweden’s Newspaper TTELA, On Saab’s Future

TROLLHÄTTAN, Sweden’s TTELA reiterates that today is when GM presents its business plan to the U.S. Treasury when the business plan gets submitted and Saab’s fate is to be determined.

The writer, Anders Sandahl, indicates the final decision makers effectively responsible for Saab Automobile’s future. I believe there also many people at General Motor’s level that we’re not hearing about this time however that we should be.

As I’ve said before and I will say again, I am hoping that the Swedish state secretary Jöran Hägglund will have the final say. One thing is interesting, it appears that it’s still unclear if General Motors actually applied for the $600 million dollar loan from the European Investment Bank. Today is already shaping up to be an “interesting” day.

Here is the detailed report below roughly translated:

Today is Saab’s final day when the owner GM presents its rescue plan to the U.S. Congress.

They have Saab’s fate in their hands

TROLLHÄTTAN frustration on the Saab, whose future may be decided by the GM’s answer tonight. – I must admit that it looks difficult out, “says Paul Ã…kerlund, Metal Club President. While speculation is that GM wants to drive Saab further in a separate company.

Decision-makers who determine the fate Saab: Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt (M), the U.S. Finance Minister Timothy Geithner (DEM), Industry Minister Maud Olofsson (C), Saab’s CEO Jan Ã…ke Jonsson, GM’s CEO Rick Wagoner, the U.S. President Barack Obama ( DEM), the President of the U.S. Congress Nancy Pelosi (DEM), Olofsson State Jöran Hägglund (C) and GM’s Europachef Carl-Peter Forster.

Sometime during the evening or at night for tomorrow GM will submit its action to the U.S. Congress. The Saab’s fate can be decided.

The company’s good or not, seems to stand and fall with the negotiations between GM and the Swedish government TTELA written about before. But if these are silent. Yet on Monday, it had not come to any firm information from the talks – however, both parties indicated that the ball is in the other.

GM believes that the missing piece is that the Swedish state visit to creditor for a loan of five billion dollars.
The government, however, replied that “Saab is an issue for GM and Fredrik Reinfeldt said on Monday that it calls” full security “for the aid it might provide.

In order to save Saab GM must apply for a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). As long as they have not done that the Swedish government does not do anything – and says the ball is in GM.

Vermont Couple Survive Crash With Moose In Saab 9000

In 2003, a Vermont couple survived a crash with a moose thanks to their Saab 9000 CS. According to the Randolph Herald.

We know the Saab 9000 is structurally rigid and a remarkable crash test performer, but this the first I have heard about its strengths during moose encounters. I wonder how they learned about this safety measure in the A-pillar of the Saab, perhaps from watching this film some years earlier?

It is great to hear that yet again, Saabs safety saves lives and makes me and my wife feel a little better knowing that our 9000 CS is also prepared to sacrifice itself to save us in the event of an accident.

I encourage you to read this story below:

Carl and Ann Brandon of Randolph Center credit their 9000 Saab and its moose-proof construction with saving their lives.

A Sunday night collision with a moose on I-89 in Royalton sent the Saab on a brief but harrowing high-speed trip: Carl steering blind across all four lanes of the interstate with his broken windshield covered with moose parts.

In the end, the Saab was totaled, but the Brandons climbed out of it with only a few scrapes and cuts.

Car-moose collisions are often fatal for both the animal and humans, as moose, much taller than deer, will fall onto the windshield and roof, splintering glass and crushing in the metal. There was a fatal crash on the Interstate several years ago, not far from where the Brandons encountered their moose this week.

Saabs, according to Brandon, “are the only car in the world actually tested for moose impact.”

Manufactured in Sweden where there are plenty of moose, Saabs feature heavy-gauge corner posts “designed so the moose will go over, rather than flatten, the car,” Carl explained.

Moose, darker than deer and with little “eye shine” to alert drivers that an animal is in the road, are also notoriously hard to spot.

A Visit To The Local Pick & Pull For Used Saab Parts

Posted on 23. Oct, 2008 by .

I made a visit today to some of the local pick & pull yards looking for used Saab parts. This is an adventure I usually enjoy, looking at how the Saabs either broke down, or saved occupants lives in crashes, etc, but today, I was surprised to see significantly less Saabs that I usually do. What was even more shocking was the sight of a classic Saab 900, complete with headlights, bumpers, nice grille, etc. crushed for the value of the metal.

This is a sad reality today, and when I see this, I realize that there was so much more of a life that was possible with that Saab with the resources, parts, etc. that are available today, so if you ever have the opportunity to save the life of a Saab from the crusher, please do! Remember, that same Saab may end up saving yours in return!
