You may recognize the headline above as a famous ’60s song written by the Kinks. However, when GM exited from bankruptcy last year it almost turned that hallowed tune on its head. With brands being jettisoned left and right, “Stop Your SAABBING” — recorded by Big Ed & The Board — seemed like the song Detroit was ready to export to Trollhattan, Sweden, home of the iconic motor company SAAB. And as word of its impending doom grew you could practically hear the cries from the Swedish automaker’s loyal community for a white knight to save their favorite cars. But instead of resolution came the teeter- totering spectacle where one moment the the brand was saved by some international buyer, while the next the doors were being locked for good.

Yet in the end, Dutch businessman Victor Muller rode in to save the day on a white hand-built Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder and stopped all the potential sobbing with his purchase of SAAB. And now the resurrection begins. But how can a car company that sold less than 9,000 vehicles last year in America be reborn?

This is a delight to see for so many of us after this process, and it’s important that these strong confidence inspiring messages continue for customers.

Dear Saab Owner,

moveAt Saab, we’ve always been proud of our ability to see challenge as opportunity. Our sense of independent, “anything is possible” thinking allows us to look at things from a different perspective and to bring unconventional ideas to everything we do. Certainly, the past few months have been as challenging as any in our 73-year history. But thanks to the optimism and dedication of our Swedish leadership and Saab loyalists like you, we are thrilled to announce that Saab is here to stay.

Without the support of our customers and fans, the recent purchase of Saab Automobile AB by Spyker N.V. would not have become a reality. We’d like to extend our sincere appreciation to you and to the thousands of fans who rallied, convoyed, blogged and otherwise helped carry the torch to save Saab. We are humbled and we are grateful, and we want you to know it.

Looking ahead, our vision remains clear: Saab is committed to creating inspiring cars for independent thinkers who are searching for something more than just another car. In a few months, we will bring a new, completely redesigned Saab 9-5 sedan to North America. Built with the latest technology and progressive Scandinavian design, we believe the 9-5 rivals the best of the premium imports.

Saab History Is Excited That Saab Spyker Deal Is Closer

Saab History has learned today that the Saab Spyker deal is significantly closer to being finalized.

As an observation of this process, I must say that the progress that we’ve seen since late last year on this deal with Spyker Cars and the leadership by all of those involved, has been quite impressive. It will be even more exciting to see Spyker as the owner once the deal closes, because then, the skies the limit when it comes to realizing the full benefits of the new “entrepreneurial focused” ownership structure.

It’s very interesting to me personally, being entrepreneurial minded ever since I can remember. Having recently attended another monthly entrepreneurial meeting last night where small businesses meet up to discuss opportunities, I was very happy to hear the audiences enthusiastic response to my acknowledgment about small business successes when it comes to mergers and acquisitions. The statement I made was, that “it appears that in the marketplace, opposed to common belief, small businesses buying larger businesses actually have better chances in succeeding, than vice-versa”. It was good to hear the audiences response given it’s relevance to that night’s topic on mergers and acquisitions, but also the fact that was true. In the city Portland, Maine, where I live, small businesses rule the landscape and it’s a nice environment to learn about small business success.

As a follow up, I fully intend on returning next month to support this claim where my case in point will be of course, Spyker, a smaller company than Saab, showing that it has more advantages in successfully running a larger company because if its abilities to focus, communicate and be flexible, in order to realize opportunities, areas that big business cannot manage. I know there are more, but we won’t see those fruits until the deal is closed.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I have great respect for the tenacity shown by Victor Muller, Jan Åke Jonsson, and Mike Colleran here in the United States, leading the charge.

I am looking forward to seeing the closing of the Saab Spyker sale soon. May this new “entrepreneurial focused” company soon to be known as Saab Spyker, be victorious.

Saab Cars North America Speaks On Saab Dealer Closings

According to the Chicago Tribune, Mike Colleran, COO and President of the new Saab Cars North America speaks about the 37% of the Saab dealership closures in the United States that is taking place at this time.

“It’s not like we’re really eliminating them,” said Mike Colleran, chief operating officer of Saab Cars North America. “We’re just selecting ones that make sense for the new business plan for Saab.”

Colleran said that while the decision was difficult, dealership longevity and stand-alone allegiance to the brand did not enter into the equation. In addition to sales, parts and service performance, the smaller network reflects a marketing strategy aimed at recapturing Saab’s unconventional cachet, something that dissipated during the GM years.

“It is our intent to focus more on premium positioning in the luxury segment, and to focus less on discounts and volume,” Colleran said.

Saab Cars North America Picks 137 Saab Dealers For Future, While GM Terminates 81 Saab Dealers In The U.S.

Saab History has confirmed reports from Reuters, and Automotive News this morning about the selection process of Saab Dealerships in the U.S.

According Mike Colleran of the SCNA, the new Saab organization in the U.S. has chosen 137 Saab Dealers that were best positioned for the future, to continue as sales, service and parts retailers in the United States.

In parallel, GM Terminates 81 Saab Dealers that did not meet the criteria for potential throughput, profitability and other criteria that the new new owners of Saab Automobile set.

The results of this process boils down to approximately 37% out of the existing 218 Saab dealerships in the United States that will not be able to continue with the new era of Saab, moving ahead, while 63% will.

Once the Saab sale has been completed which is targeted for November 30th, the 81 Saab dealers will need to cease Saab operations, while the remaining 137 Saab dealerships will be operating under a new sales, service and parts agreement.

Below is a double quoted reference by both GM & Automotive news outlining the details on both sides of the spectrum.

As part of the continuing progress in the proposed sale of Saab, letters have been sent (Nov. 9) to selected Saab dealers in the U.S.

One set of letters is from Saab Cars North America (SCNA) to the Saab dealers it has selected to move forward with SCNA as a dealer and/or service center upon completion of the Saab AB sale transaction. There are approximately 137 dealers in this group.

The other set of letters comes from General Motors and indicates that the remaining approximately 81 dealers will now be expected to terminate their dealership under the terms of the Dealer Termination Agreement (DTA) that all Saab dealers signed in June. Those terminations are expected to happen when the sale closes between GM and the buyer of Saab.

If no sale closing occurs, the provisions of the DTA will stay in place for all 218 Saab dealers based on a ?no buyer scenario.?

Saab buyer rejects 81 U.S. stores

DETROIT — Saab’s new owner will reject 81 of Saab’s 218 U.S. dealerships, General Motors Co. said today.

GM said in a letter received by dealers today that Saab’s buyer, Swedish exclusive sportscar maker Koenigsegg, selected the surviving stores. Koenigsegg will operate the brand here through a new entity, Saab Cars North America Inc.

The target date to close the sale of Saab is Nov. 30, but it could take until year end, says Mike Colleran, COO of Saab Cars North America in Detroit.

“SCNA did make its selection of (go-forward) dealers based on our business plan and the needs of that plan,” Colleran says. “Essentially, we’re looking for strong dealers who have good profitability and good throughput.”

Location also factored into the decision, he said.

GM sent letters out through Federal Express on Wednesday to rejected dealers, GM spokeswoman Ryndee Carney said. Saab will have 137 U.S. dealers after the sale.

All Saab dealers signed a termination agreement in June when GM entered federal bankruptcy protection, Carney says. The terms of those termination agreements will go into effect for rejected dealerships.

If the deal to sell Saab falls through — as GM’s deal to sell Saturn to Penske Automotive Group did — GM would close Saab and all the dealerships would be terminated, Carney says.

The surviving dealerships will remain under their current dealer contract with GM until it expires in October 2010, Colleran says. Then they will get new franchise agreements with Saab Cars North America.

The North American Saab 9-5 Debut & Press Conference

This past Friday, the all new Saab 9-5 made its North American debut at the Miami Auto Show.

At this minimalist event with all of the right Scandinavian modern touches, Mike Colleran, the new COO for Saab Cars North America, presented to the media, the new era for Saab Automobile along with the all new Saab 9-5.

This press conference took place just over a month since the global debut of the all new Saab 9-5 back on September 15th in Frankfurt.

This press conference, although naturally smaller in scale than the global conference was in my opinion as an observer, was much more inspirational. This press conference left me with a good feeling about the future for Saab when I finally got to hear the following words from Saab after all of these years, coming from none other than Mike Colleran.

The words were “Welcome back to the company that thinks a little differently.”.

This welcoming customers back quote, reminds me of my interview with Knut Simonsson and is beginning to resonate with me in terms of this humble and gentle approach Saab is making with new the new era.

A job well done by Mike Colleran and staff at the new Saab Cars North America. As you continue to listen and welcome your customers back as it appears you are doing, you will succeed.

Today, the all new Saab 9-5 made its North American debut at the Miami Auto Show in Florida.

Saab History’s architect/Saab enthusiast Bruce W. was kind enough to attend the event and take photographs for us for those that could not make it to the event.

There were approximately 50 people in attendance, quite smaller than the global debut last month in Frankfurt. The mood was upbeat and the presentation was much better than any other automobile manufacturers at the show.
