Saab Cars North America Announces Pricing on 2010 Model Year 9-3 Vehicles

* Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices reduced on all 2010 model year 9-3 variants
* 2010 model year vehicles to begin arriving in showrooms in April

DETROIT – Saab Cars North America today announced that manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing will be reduced for all 2010 model year 9-3 vehicles. These are the first 2010 model year Saab vehicles produced for the U.S. market and closely follow the recent acquisition of Saab Automobile AB by Spyker Cars NV

An exciting line-up of model year 2010 vehicles will arrive during the next few weeks to dealer showrooms across the United States. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for every 2010 model year 9-3 variant has been reduced anywhere from 4 to 12 percent compared to model year 2009.

“This pricing action allows Saab to be in-line with the market and maintains accessibility of Saab’s rich Swedish heritage, innovation and responsible performance for our many loyal owners, enthusiasts and potential new customers,” said Mike Colleran, President and COO, Saab Cars North America.

Topping the list for 2010 is an all-new 9-3X premium cross-over model. Powered by Saab’s 2.0 liter turbocharged engine and available with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, the 9-3X offers sporty performance without the typical penalty of high fuel consumption. Add in the standard cross-wheel drive (XWD) with electronic limited slip differential (eLSD) and raised chassis, the 9-3X delivers an all-road driving experience you can take with you no matter where your road leads. The 9-3X starts at $37,800 MSRP.

The 9-3 Sport Sedan is available in two trim levels, 2.0T and Aero, and both can be specified with either front wheel drive or with Saab’s Cross-Wheel Drive (XWD) system. Sport Sedan starting prices range from $29,725 MSRP for the 2.0T to $38,940 MSRP for the Aero model. Both cars offer a host of standard equipment with the Aero adding sport-focused features such as 17” alloy wheels, more aggressive front fascia, interior trim with two-tone leather seats, thicker sport steering wheel, a sport tuned chassis, and dual bright exhaust tailpipes. OnStar with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity is available on 2.0T models and comes standard on the Aero. A Bose six-CD audio system and XM Satellite Radio are also standard Aero content. Memory driver seat and rear park assist are available on Aero models in the optional Premium Package.

GM Reaches Agreement to Sell Saab to Spyker

2010-01-26

DETROIT – General Motors and Spyker Cars NV today confirmed that they have reached a binding agreement on the purchase of Saab Automobile AB.

“Today’s announcement is great news for Saab employees, dealers and suppliers, great news for millions of Saab customers and fans worldwide, and great news for GM,” said John Smith, GM vice president for corporate planning and alliances.

“General Motors, Spyker Cars, and the Swedish government worked very hard and creatively for a deal that would secure a sustainable future for this unique and iconic brand, and we’re all happy for the positive outcome,” Smith said.

As part of the agreement, Spyker intends to form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, which will carry the Saab brand forward. The sale will be subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory, governmental and court approvals. Other terms and conditions specific to the sale will be disclosed in due time.

The Swedish government is at present reviewing the transaction and the related request for guarantees of a Saab Automobile loan that has been requested from the European Investment Bank. Assuming quick action, the transaction is expected to close in mid-February, and previously announced wind down activities at Saab will be immediately suspended, pending the close of the transaction.

“Throughout the negotiations, GM has always had the hope to find a solution for Saab that would avoid a wind down of the brand,” added Nick Reilly, president, GM Europe. “We’ve worked with many parties over the past year, including governments and investors, and I’m very pleased that we could come to such a good conclusion, one that preserves jobs in Sweden and elsewhere. GM will continue to support Saab and Spyker on their way forward.”

Saab Sighting Of The Week “Turbo-X In Montreal, Canada”

During my review of the Saab 9-3 Aero XWD eLSD SportCombi, I managed to spot a beautiful yet rare 2008 Saab 9-3 Turbo-X and dropped my card for the chance to hope hear from the owner.

Within the next day, I heard back from the owner, Sonny of Montreal, who absolutely loves this vehicle and provided us his reason for buying it and his experience with it.

A thank you to Sonny for sharing for including in this week’s Saab Sighting of the week!

You sure picked the right person to review the Saab 93 TurboX. I am someone who has been driving manual shift vehicles for four decades. I always get high end luxury sedans due to the nature of my work (salesman on the road). I prefer manual vehicles because of the degree of safety and control I get compared with automatics. Notably I have owned a Volvo S70, a Saab 95 Aero and an Infinity G35. However, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that my 9-3 TurboX is probably the best car I have ever had.

From the moment I saw it at last years Montreal Auto Show, I knew it was the car for me. I came this close to ordering a BMW 335IX, but I had some reserves; namely with all the options I wanted, that fine automobile became extremely expensive. Then I met the 9-3 Turbo-X. It came fully loaded with everything any sensible car enthusiast could ever want, at a price that was affordable. Getting the 9-3 proved to be somewhat of a challenge, as my Memorial day promise arrived around the fourth of July. But who cares? I got it, and I love it!

The main features that make me so positive about this car are the power and the handling. Travelling through first gear is really good, and noticeably better then any of my previous cars. Second through six are even better. As for cornering, does the phrase “glued to the road” mean anything? This baby zips around any corner at any speed. I just love losing anybody on my trail on a cloverleaf. I only wish there were some roads where I could redline her in sixth gear.

And the braking is just as good as the accelerating. I don’t know the spec that Saab put it to those brakes, but let me tell you, somebody knew what they were doing. Also, this car is appreciably smaller then my 9-5, and better suited at changing lanes, weaving through traffic, and parking in tight spots.

As to the creature comforts of the car: they are all just right. The fine leather is sumptuous and the heated seats are cosy, and quick. The shift lever and the armrest are well spaced so that my elbow is not left hanging. The front cupholder is cute & clever. This is my first car with satellite radio, and I liked it so much, that I ordered a portable unit for my wife’s car. I also enjoy the Onstar telephone service, but I occasionally find myself cursing at the android for not hearing me correctly! Aah technology!

All in all, I think this is a great car at a reasonable price. I have very few criticisms, except maybe its a little tough on gas (but what do you expect with some 300 ponies). I think that it is a shame that it is a limited edition vehicle, and hope the manufacturer has the good sense to produce this model again.

Saab Automobile USA’s Jan-Willem Vester has provided Saab History with a recent press release about the Saab 9-3x Cross-Combi debuting at the New York Auto Show this Thursday.

Here is the press release below:

NEW 2010 SAAB 9-3X: FROM TROLLHÄTTAN TO MANHATTAN

Latest in 9-3 Family Combines Advanced Cross-Wheel Drive With Fuel Efficiency

DETROIT – Saab will introduce the 2010 9-3X at the 2009 New York International Auto Show on April 8, a rugged all-rounder aimed at active individualists seeking an alternative to a large crossover or SUV. It is the vehicle’s North American debut, following its world premiere last month at the Geneva Auto Show.

Developed and manufactured at Saab’s headquarters in Trollhättan, Sweden, the 9-3X is designed to stylishly transport outdoor enthusiasts to their adventures. It features distinctive looks; a versatile SportCombi body; higher stance; and advanced all-wheel-drive technology. On top of that, the 9-3X also offers fuel efficiency and functional storage without limits on the kinds of roads it can travel.

In the 9-3X, the acclaimed Saab Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) system – which made its debut in the Turbo X limited edition model last year – will be combined with the fuel-efficient 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. The 9-3X embodies Saab’s “EcoPower” technology philosophy, which aims at combining a dynamic driving experience with an efficient use of resources to achieve responsible performance.

Distinctive appeal

Saab designers raised the chassis of the two-wheel-drive 9-3 SportCombi 1.4 inches (35 mm) and added automatic body-leveling so the 9-3X can handle a rugged driving terrain regardless of the load on the rear axle. It is designed for those who frequently travel gravel or unpaved roads, without compromising the driving experience on asphalt.

It was recently brought to my attention that while it’s clear there is a lot of news going on these days, it’s important to indicate that all new and existing Saab Automobile customers will have their service, parts and warranties honored as GM is legally responsible to uphold these agreements made with individual dealerships around the world.

The one thing we cannot have now, are customers turning away from possible sales, service, parts, etc. so please keep in mind that it’s business as usual as a customer with a company that is required to honor all agreements, it is GM’s legal responsibility.

This material was recently updated on the Saab Automobile USA owners section of the website.

Bill Powell, GM’s VP NA Industry-Dealer Affairs, Retires

Forbes is confirming today that GM’s VP North America Industry-Dealer Affairs, Bill Powell Retires.

Powell, 61, was instrumental in redesigning the dealership channel network including the consolidation of Saab dealerships to the Cadillac/Hummer/Saab idea to align with the “premium brands” channel alignment for General Motors.

You can say that although GM indicates he successfully realigned the dealerships within the Saab brand, the exclusive Saab dealerships have rightfully held back his efforts and for this, they have succeeded where these new dealerships have failed.

His retirement continues the trend of upper management taking retirement offers, all coincidentally prior to the February 17th date when GM presents their business plan to the U.S. Treasury.

I wonder who else at General Motos upper management, like others that were responsible for reducing Saab Automobile’s effectiveness, will take the low road will duck out early so that they can’t be blamed?

Here is the official press release below from GM:

powell.jpgDETROIT – General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced today that William E. Powell, GM North America Vice President of Industry-Dealer Affairs, has elected to retire on March 1, 2009.

“Bill Powell has made tremendous contributions to GM in a variety of roles over the past 32 years, and we will miss his invaluable insights,” said Wagoner. “Bill played a key role in the successful realignment of GM’s Channel structure and dealer network during a challenging period for the industry. Importantly, he was instrumental in strengthening GM’s dealer development program, which was the first in the industry.”

Powell began his career with GM in 1977 at Buick Motor Division in Flint, Mich. He moved through a span of sales assignments prior to becoming general manager of the Dealer Network Investment and Development Group and later the regional general manager of GM’s Southeast region for the Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing organization. Powell graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, and earned a master’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University.
