Saab History Receives Updated Saab Cars North America Allentown, PA Parts Facility Photo

Only a few days has passed since I posted the Saab Sighting of the Week taken place at Saab’s U.S. parts facility in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and I wondered if the sign would be cleaned up there and restored.

“Ask and thou shall receive”. Today, Saab History has received from the folks at the facility, an updated photo showing their restored sign and area reaffirming a continuation of the 18+ years (1992-Present) that this facility has been in operation. It’s interesting to note, but this facility may break the record in a few years set by the former Saab USA facility in Orange, Connecticut (1971-1992) as the longest serving facility in Saab’s U.S. history.

A thank you to the folks at the Saab Cars North America parts facility for providing the updated photo.

SAAB 96 Electric Vehicle Owner Contacts Saab History

Posted on 05. Aug, 2009 by .

Saab Enthusiast, Brandon Hollinger of Pennsylvania that I wrote about back in June, has contacted Saab History and provided us a nice little video and information about his SAAB 96 EV project as well as what inspired him!

It’s great to see a Saab Enthusiast like Brandon launch this project by seeing another person’s EV project here on Saab History! I am very happy to see another SAAB 96 saved by their owner, not ending up in a scrap heap, and now quite possibly getting better energy efficiency than many modern Saabs to this day! It’s this kind of ingenuity that inspires us to follow Saab Automobile’s vehicles. It’s almost like with all of the engineering that went into them at a given time, we feel that we can’t let that go to waste, and some of us even take it a step further and improve and modernize it themselves!

I just saw my story on saab history. you have a great great site! i’ve visited it many times over the past year to gain knowledge about all the various saab models – especially christen johansen’s. i’ve been in touch with him often and he’s shared some of his experience with me. i pursued that connection because of your website! i actually had already decided to convert the saab 96 and then i actually saw his. really odd coincidence. in terms of saabs, i only know of the 4 conversions you have listed on your site and one other 900 on youtube. oh and there’s a sonett EV in oregon but i don’t know where he got it.

thanks for providing a great website,

The Saab Parts Facility in Allentown, Pennsylvania has generously donated 47 pallets of Saab parts that are known to be discontinued, to the 2009 Saab Owners Convention in Copper Mountain, Colorado.

There will be quite a bit of items, so if you were questioning getting out to the convention, this is the year!

New Parts –

At Copper Mountain we will have a huge amount of new parts from Saab. John Christensen at the parts warehouse from Saab in Allentown PA has generously offered to ship 47 pallets of parts from that have been discontinued, overstocked or written off by Saab. These parts will be available Friday morning 10:00 am for purchase. We do not exactly know what parts there will be. One item will be 846 posters of the Viggen jet with a bumper sticker saying :My other Saab is a car”. These will be very cheep and priced to go away. Some other items will be wheels, trailer hitches. racks, lubricants, toys, radios, tires. You name it, it will probably be there. Make your list of what you want. For those who have not been to a parts sale, it is remarkable what is there.

There will be a parking lot full many vendors who will be bringing trailers of parts to sell from all over the country. These people have collected and have many rare parts over the years and would like you to take some off their hands. If you are planning to restore a vintage, these people are going to be your very best contacts. Don’t miss this opportunity to take home something you have always been looking for to restore your vintage

We will offer shipping to your home if you can not travel with these items due to size restrictions.

For those who have not registered, time is running out. When you register, you will receive access to Friday night reception and Saturday night awards banquet programs, Five meals and access to all seminars and events, scheduled. Do not miss this opportunity of a lifetime. You can register online at www.rockymtnsaabclub.com/SOC09

Saab History Visits “Saabs @ Carlisle” – 5.16.2009

Posted on 18. May, 2009 by .

This past Saturday, May 16th, 2009, I managed to get down to the annual Saab show in Carlisle, Pennsylvania “The State of Independence” with a colleague of mine’s new 2008 9-3 2.0T SportCombi.

The Saab show, launched by the Central Pennsylvania Saab Club 10 years ago was apparently suggested by the local Opel club 10 years ago this weekend. This suggestion to have Saabs placed in the show adjacent to the Opels would make some good sense, since professionally speaking, Saab have partnered with Opel in development for the past 15 years or so. Having Opels & Saabs at a car show, alongside each other made logical sense. Since then, the incremental growth of the Saab show at the event over the past 10 years has been outstanding. It was to be expected that this year, over 200 vehicles turned out, making it another record attendance.

While the weather was variable, the rain held up throughout the day during my visit and as a result, I had quite the time getting to take more of an in-depth experience since my first visit, a whole two years ago when the Saab USA Heritage Collection was present.

As I circumnavigated the Highways, Streets, Roads, Avenues, Vistas and other developed marque designations for Saab models, I got to see a nice variety including just about every production Saab production model. I also explored other manufacturer’s camps this year including Saab’s Swedish sister, Volvo. In speaking with them, they said, they continue to be surprised by just how many Saabs show up year after year without fail. I told them, that these people are devoted so much that they may break another record this year of attendance, even when the future direction of Saab Automobile has been uncertain for the past year.

There were also many dealerships involved this year, three this time including an independent and Saab History sponsor, Swedish Motor Cars of Washington, D.C.!

I have said it before and I will say it again, it is clear that the the “SAAB” presence far outweighed all other marques on the lawn that day the sheer square footage that was designated as “Saabs @ Carlisle”.

Unlike my previous visit two years ago, I managed to visit the vendor spaces that included those specifically selling a plethora of SAAB parts, accessories, product literature & toys. One of the vendors showed up for the first time this year, where I managed to acquire an incredible amount of never before seen videos and other television advertisements, stay tuned!

Throughout the event, the photography, conversing with colleagues, and all other activities were great, however the memorable experience this year was the tribute to Bob Sinclair during the lunch hour where we gave a moment of silence.

I hope that this summary and photographs best captures some of the major Saab highlights as well as the other key aspects of the Saabs @ Carlisle event this past Saturday, May 16th, 2009.

This second visit was very good and I am glad that I had the opportunity to attend it.

The event will be in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on May 15th through the 17th, with Saturday, the 16th being the largest day for turnouts.

The Saab Cars USA Parts Facility 1992 – Present

Posted on 20. Mar, 2009 by .

Photo Credit: Saab Cars USA, Inc.

Saab History has just been made aware of the Saab USA Parts facility that came about in 1992. It was Saab Cars USA, Inc. that relocated their parts and accessories facilities from Meriden, Connecticut to Allentown, Pennsylvania where it continues to reside today. The same year that this facility began, the Orange, Connecticut headquarters also relocated to Norcross, Georgia.

This facility has been the storage location for just about every Saab part & accessory imaginable and serves as the main warehouse for all Saab dealerships in the United States.

When a dealership, independent or parts vendor receives a request for a part they don’t stock, they contact this facility to see if they have it, if they don’t they check with their global supplier in Nykoping, Sweden.
