Snowdodgers Charity Rally Team Arrive in Sweden!

Posted on 19. Apr, 2009 by .

The Snow Dodgers Charity Rally team had quite a nice trip through Sweden after driving over the öresund bridge from Copenhagen.

As part of their experience in Sweden, they have sent me a nice e-mail along with some photographs of their experience! As you will read below, their drive has not been without problems, but fortunately the Saab Community, in particular a guy who works at a SCANIA truck shop, has come out to help them as you will read below.

In the meantime, Team Snow dodgers are now in the Artic Circle, so I encourage you to check out their updates!

Two of these pics where taken at the Swedish Airforce Museum. The plane behind is a SAAB 32 Lansen!

One photo was taken in Germany at the Nurburgring where the 900i posted a solid sub 15minute lap time! She did three laps in total which accounted for the trip to the Garage in Stockholm for a new tyre! Unfortuately the garage car lift probably helped the exhaust on its way…it fell off on the motorway yesterday leaving Stockholm…which meant a 200mile drive with earplugs having hacked the broken exhaust off in three sections with a shovel!

Our SAAB owning host Class, and his garage friend Peter managed to weld the broken exhaust back together in Peter’s lunch break using pipes from the scrapyard!

We have now driven on our ‘new exhaust’ for another 200 miles north without incident and are now stopped for the night having driven through several snow showers and freezing rain.

We will be leaving Sweden tomorrow and crossing over into Finland before heading even further north towards the Arctic Circle!

Cheers for all your support. We have had lots of encouragement on the road along the way.

Kind regards,

Trollhättan, Sweden Celebrates “Saab Days” July 17-19

Posted on 18. Mar, 2009 by .

Trollhättan, Sweden will be celebrating what is known as “Saab Days” on June 17th-19th, 2009. This event will not be an official Saab Festival like 2007, but more of a club organized event.

However, Saab Automobile and the Saab Car Museum will help support it says Peter Backstrom, curator of the Saab Car Museum in his e-mail to Saab History below:

Hello Ryan!

The Saab days is an initiative from the Swedish Saab Club, Saab Turbo Club of Sweden and Club Sonett Sweden. It will take place July 17-19 in Trollhättan. I will be coordinated with the Fallens dagar Festival and the Midnight Sun rally.

For more information about the event itself, see the clubs websites. They would like to point out that it will not be an event with the same level like the Saabfestival, But I am convinced that it will be worthwhile for international visitors to book tickets!

I have good reasons to believe that you already have made the conclusion that it will be no official Saabfestival 2009. Although we are not organizing “Saabens dagar” we will of course support it as much as we can from Saab Automobile / Saab Car Museums side.

The Midnight Sun Rally will have a overnight rest at the Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan between Friday & Saturday and a total of 180 cars will participate. Among them around 40 Saabs from 2-stroker to V4:s and 99 turbos. Driven flat out! with 2 special stages around Trollhättan. See www.midnattsolrallyt.com for more info.

That all I have right now!

Best Regards

Jalopnik has reported that the 1995 Saab 900 Pikes Peak Car, will be going up for auction at the Barret Jackson auction house early next year in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The 1995 Saab 900 Pikes Peak Car is the first car in the Saab USA Heritage Collection to be auctioned off, and it may not be the last.

I have checked the Barret-Jackson website and have not seen it listed, so I’ve contacted them as well as Saab Automobile USA to confirm or deny these reports. They have confirmed this now.

I have also contacted Jan-Willem Vester at Saab Automobile USA and he has confirmed these reports as well.

In finding that these reports are true, and I am absolutely livid and floored that GM can be so short-sighted in this regard.

I have asked many people from Saab Automobile USA, to the GM Heritage Collection to the Saab Car Museum as to why this car can’t be offered to the Saab Car Museum in Trollhättan, Sweden! and here’s what I have understood at this time from the GM Heritage Collection as well as Saab Automobile USA, which seem to be conflicting statements:

The Saab Car Museum is not part GM, therefore we can’t send the cars to them – GM Heritage Collection

The Saab Car Museum does not have the budget in Sweden to acquire even a few cars at this time – Saab Automobile USA

No response as of the time of this posting from Peter Backstrom at the Saab Car Museum.

Saab Car Show in Frankfurt, Germany – Photos

The folks from Saab Automobile Germany and the local dealership in Frankfurt that hosted the classic Saab car show this past weekend, have provided Saab History photos of the event.

As you can see with the photos, there were a number of vehicles present, by local Saab Enthusiasts in Germany as well as Switzerland. On hand, was Peter Backstrom, curator of the Saab Car Museum in Sweden as well as Andrew Dyson, Saab designer at GM Europe.

During the event there was live music provided by Swedish singer Pia Fridhill, and even a live demonstration of a Saab 99 restoration by a master technician at the Saab Zentrum Frankfurt.

Evidently, there was even a parts market, books on hand in addition to model cars and tv clips showing vintage Saabs in action.

Overall, it looks like it was a great time had by all that were in attendance.
