The Daily Tribune has recently visited the new headquarters for Saab Cars North America in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Here is the article below and keeping with the current trend, I will not be editorializing this article.

Company president is pleased with new headquarters.

ROYAL OAK — Mike Colleran, president and COO of Saab Cars North America, looked at hundreds of buildings for a new headquarters, sometimes not knowing if the company “born from jets” in 1937 would survive the automotive downturn.

It was a long and bumpy road from the towering General Motors offices at the Renaissance Center in Detroit to a one-story gray structure in a suburban industrial district.

However, the Saab saga has a happy ending with a new era and tagline — “move your mind” — unfolding in the surprisingly sleek interior of a renovated warehouse at 4327 Delemere Court.

Sitting behind his blond desk with a single line of paperwork stretching neatly from top to bottom, Colleran described the tumultuous time for the Swedish-based company’s 3,400 employees worldwide, including the few dozen who handle sales, service and marketing in Michigan.

“It was a rollercoaster ride, no question about that,” Colleran said in an office where photographs of Saab cars wait to be hung on white walls. “It started in late 2008 when GM announced a strategic review of the Saab brand.”

Saab AB is a Swedish company engaged in vehicle manufacturing. In 1990, General Motors purchased controlling interest in Saab AB, and in 2000 bought the remainder of the company. Spyker Cars N.V. purchased GM’s interest in Saab Automobile AB, for a mixture of cash and preference shares, resulting in Saab Cars North America, Inc. being established as the North American operations of Saab AB.

Spyker Cars N.V., no relation to the prior Spyker Company, is a private company, founded in 1999, and headquartered in Zeewolde, Netherlands. Saab will be a stand-alone niche manufacturer with three or four model lines. Spyker believes strongly in the benefits to be achieved in the sharing of certain assets and technology services, especially Saab’s extensive global network of 1,100 dealers, marketing & sales, merchandising, promotion and sponsorship activities.

Saab Cars North America, Inc. is a new entity without a presence in Michigan currently.

Where Do You Think SCNA's New HQ Should Be?

Posted on 02. Mar, 2010 by .

Saab History has recently learned that the current Saab Cars North America organization will be out of the GM Renn Cenn by next Friday, March 12th and into their new Headquarters. This is very good news as Saab continues to separate themselves from GM.

That being said, I have previously polled about this, last September prior to learning about the prospective Royal Oak, Michigan location. Today, I want to once again ask you, what location do you think they should relocate to at this time? The location may already be chosen by this time, however I think it’s important to see what you think.

We need to keep in mind that since Saab Automobile’s global headquarters have returned home, that being Trollhättan, Sweden, the same should be said for here in the United States, that in my opinion, being New England.

As you know quite well by now if you are a Saab History frequenter, that I still believe that this new headquarters should be in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, both the main office, including the heritage collection and historical archives. This location as I have said would be appropriate for just about every reason imaginable from that heritage collection, their reconnection with their roots starting in New England, where their largest demographic is located, to all of the possible promotional advertising and press opportunities right near the mountains and the coast. It’s cost efficient for business tax reasons, it’s ideal for all of the scenic locations for pr and advertising needs, and logical much like what Sweden is doing by bringing all activities “home”, and that being for Saab in the U.S. is New England, where it all started.

We all came out in full force to help Save Saab, so our unified voice is once again very important in shaping the future success and direction of Saab.

The results of this poll will show where we believe a truly independent Saab operation should be, in the United States. The key is independent from GM, that being physically far away from the headquarters (ie. not in the same state, etc.)

Here’s the historical information below for your reference:

405 Park Avenue, New York (1956-1961)
100 Waterfront Street New Haven, CT (1961-1971)
60 Marsh Hill Road / 35 Executive Blvd Orange, CT (1972-1992)
Norcross, Georgia (1992-2004)
Renaissance Center, Detroit, Michigan (2004-2009)

Update: 3.3.2010 6:00PM EST – It’s great to see Orange, Connecticut & Portsmouth, NH neck & neck, with Royal Oak a close second.

Where Do You Suggest The New Saab USA HQ Should Be?

  • Orange, CT (25%, 53 Votes)
  • Portsmouth, NH (24%, 49 Votes)
  • New York, NY (13%, 28 Votes)
  • Royal Oak, MI (12%, 25 Votes)

The Saab Automobile & GM Meeting In Detroit Is Underway

Posted on 01. Dec, 2009 by .

The primary meeting between GM and the Swedish Government at the Rennaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan is taking a while, so the 13-member GM board meeting is going to be starting a little later than planned, according to Sweden’s Expression.

It should also be known that once a determination is made, GM will not be doing a press conference where questions & answers can be made, instead they will be issuing a press release according to Tom Wilkinson, GM’s Press coordinator. I’m not sure what to say about that.

Here’s the piece below from Swedish Radio, translated.

The meeting with the GM people were booked for 23 o’clock Swedish time, at GM’s headquarters. In the official Swedish delegation, there were five people, including Joran Hagglund, State Secretary in the Ministry of Industry.

In addition, Jan Ã…ke Jonsson, Saab-head, in Detroit. Although he hits GM’s management and at least one party.

GM’s press officer Tom Wilkinson told TT that GM will not have a press conference in conjunction with the Board. If something new comes out that GM will be sending out a press release, according to Wilkinson.

Meanwhile in Trollhättan representatives from Chinese BAIC to review Saab technology.

Who would participate in the Swedish meeting with GM management would not say Frank Nilsson. Nor what was the Swedish message more than the desire to get the proper opportunity to present their views and clarify what the Swedish government can do and can not do.

Hit by GM management was before the meeting that GM’s board would later start and where it might be a decision on the Saab. Closures, new sales process or maintain the issue.

The meeting was held in the huge Renaissance Center – the skyscrapers in the middle of Detroit, where GM has its headquarters. So far, even Saab’s U.S. office there.

13 people are included in the Board. Four are appointed by the U.S. government, which owns around 60 percent of GM. A delegate of the Canadian government, which also has a stake after GM’s reorganization.
They have Saab’s fate in their hands.

– I hope they take the time to familiarize themselves with everything so that it becomes a business decision based on facts and nothing to rush for years to keep a deadline, “said Kjell ac Bergstrom, CEO of Saab Automobile Powertrain, which was involved in producing the base, which Saab Chief had with them.

Among those said to have retained an interest group covers Chinese Beijing Auto (BAIC), which was intended as part of the Koenigsegg Group.

According to information provided to TT technicians came from BAIC to Saab in Trollhättan, as late as Sunday, to continue to see the technology and intellectual property company wants. BAIC has plans to produce older models of Saab in China.

While Beijing Auto’s CEO Wang Dazong suggested continued purchasing interest, he stated that the company does not need a new plant, reported Reuters.

Merbanco investment bank based in Wyoming would also continue to be in the match. The company’s CEO Christopher Johnston has confirmed to several media that you can think of a purchase, but believes that the Swedish government should provide more support.

Renewed speculators is also stated U.S. financial group Renco Group to be.

Among the group that the government and GM management is expected to discuss before the board meeting started was also to find out more about speculators and talk about the government’s ability to provide state guarantees. The process of EIB loan need not be taken on a new Saab Owners.

– The more you can use the previous plans, the faster it can go, “says Bengt Wenner Stein, scientific councils of the Economy Ministry.

GM’s board meeting resumed on Tuesday morning, local time. When the decision is taken on Saab is not known. It may come as early as after Monday’s meeting. It can also delay the meeting until the entire course.

Details On Saab Cars N.A. Possible HQ In Royal Oak, MI

Posted on 22. Oct, 2009 by .

The Daily Tribune has published another great article about the progress of Saab Cars North America’s possible new HQ in Royal Oak, Michigan.

By Catherine Kavanaugh
Daily Tribune Staff Writer

Special district established to pave way for tax break.

ROYAL OAK — The city created a special district that will allow Saab Cars North America to be eligible for a tax break if it relocates its Detroit headquarters to an industrial area in the north end.

Saab, a subsidiary of General Motors, will be an independent company Jan. 1, 2010, and is looking to move from the Renaissance Center to Royal Oak or a site in Connecticut.

“We will need a new location for that new company,” Michael Colleran, chief operating officer of Saab Cars NA, told the City Commission on Monday.

Saab is interested in the renovated office space of Ronnisch Construction Group, 4327 Delemere Court, where it would invest $2 million and create 52 high-paying jobs.

“These will be all new positions paying about $2,200 a week,” said Irene Spanos, a representative of Oakland County’s planning and economic development services.

The county is working on an incentive package to give Royal Oak the edge over Connecticut, where Saab’s headquarters were located, Spanos added.

Colleran said Royal Oak is under consideration because Ronnisch has “the right feel for our brand.” He also pointed to the area’s well-educated work force and proximity to auto suppliers.

Saab is seeking a tax break that would apply to the full value of the personal property for up to 12 years. The company notified the Michigan Economic Development Corporation its personal property would be worth $897,000.

As the first step in the process, Royal Oak had to create an industrial development district for Saab

to apply for the abatement under Michigan’s General Property Tax Act.

“I’m honored to make the motion,” City Commissioner Carlo Ginotti said after a public hearing on the request.

Two people spoke in favor of the special district and tax break.

“I feel privileged as a resident they have chosen Royal Oak as a potential partner,” Stephen Lovett said.

The commission created the district with a unanimous vote and set a Nov. 16 public hearing for the tax exemption request.

If Royal Oak is chosen, Ronnisch, which owns the 13,000-square-foot building, then will enter into lease negotiations with Saab. If the two companies agree on terms, Ronnisch will give up its offices and move to a smaller location in the area.

Ronnisch’s one-story, gray brick structure was renovated from a concrete shell to contemporary commercial space with exposed ceilings, open common areas, and private offices with maple wood, perforated steel accents and port hole windows. The general contractor filled most of the structure until the company downsized.
