Sweden’s AM&S Interviews Saab Automobile AB President, Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson at the NAIAS that began this Sunday.

It appears that Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson states that Saab Automobile needs to become a separate unit from General Motors altogether in order for it to succeed. This is great to hear!

For the rest of the interview read below:

auto motor & sport,

ams: Bob Lutz told me that General Motors can not support Saab longer?

Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson, JÃ…J:Saab is an integral part of GM and many of the projects under way in the GM, we are a part of. The cost of many projects would be increased for GM on Saab was with. Builded not Saab 9-4X is the other cars at the factory in Mexico more expensive. But Saab has to become a separate unit in the talks between GM and Saab, the Swedish government and GM is really good. ”

ams: Does this mean Saab will grow in Sweden, to become more self-sufficient, to clear himself?

JÃ…J: “The talks are constructive and I think it can be very good for Saab to come. We will be more independent.”

ams: When will something happen?

JÃ…J: “GM must present a plan for U.S. Congress in the first quarter of this year. As such, Saab’s new role to be clear.”

ams: What is this?

JÃ…J: “Everything we do for GM in terms of development work and so on, we’ll charge GM. And all the help we get from GM and everything we buy from GM, we will pay for. Saab becomes an independent unit with its own economy. We will write contracts for all these things. In this way, it’s easier to show off Saab’s real results. ”

ams: The future?

JÃ…J: “We have a good business plan with many new models in the pipeline.”

ams: What future scenarios are there? Continue in GM, continue yourself, be bought by another company?

JÃ…J: “Yes.”

ams: What do you think about this year’s Detroit Motor Show?

JÃ…J: “It has been very little talk about the cars and just business. The big challenge is to get customers.”

ams: But you do not have new cars here?

JÃ…J: “Oh, yes, Saab 9-5 Griffin is new here in the U.S.. And it is not a concept car, it is available to buy.

General Motors Europe To Create New Auto Group In Collaboration With FIAT in Turin, Italy?

Posted on 07. Jan, 2009 by .

gme.jpg

This process of Saab Automobile looking for a new owner, is getting kind of interesting now, given that all three of the possible candidates indicated have said they are not interested in Saab Automobile including speculation on Porsche as well, which turned up to be just a rumor.

However, let’s not forget that it has been Fiat that have continuously indicated in their dialog here at Saab History, that they are not in a position to comment about their status even though they have also said that they are not interested in acquiring Saab Automobile.

What’s new to this developing story for Saab is that, a late breaking article has shown up on Sweden’s expression, which appears to indicate some talk between Saab Automobile’s Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson and General Motors Europe’s chairman, Carl-Peter Forster, about forming some new group.

This new group will quite possibly be between General Motors Europe and FIAT and will be located in Turin, Italy.

Turin Italy, if you may or may not know is where one of GM’s design studios are located. It was at this studio, where the Saab 9-4x BioPower Concept car was put together as illustrated on a promotional video filmed there. The Saab 9-4x BioPower concept was shown back in January of 2008 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan.

Here is a translation of the high points of the article thanks to Sweden’s Jan Ollsson.

Carl-Peter Forster

GM’s Europan president has been unusually withdrawn in recent weeks. The first time I listened to Forster, I was convinced that he wanted to bully Saab to show off his own dear Opel. But when the E85-liquor was served Forster’s liking of Saab suddenly increased. Forster has not chosen siden yet – probably because he does not want to be seen make to much noise. If he is forced to leave Wagoners side much speaks for Forster joining Saab’s Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson and take a flight to Turin to piece together a new group together with Fiat.

Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson

Saab’s chief executive has worked hard since GM announced the company on “Blocket, online ad service” Jan-Ã…ke have fought hard to maintain Saab’s position in the car market. He has managed so so… with a practically impossible task. Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson is sticking his chin out and try to defend himslef which he should have credit for. Playing dirty is not Jan-Ã…kes style which should not be interpreted to mean that he can withstand any amount at any time. Whatever happens, I hope that Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson will come unscrathed from the fight and that Saab survives.

At this point, I almost think it’s pointless to send e-mails to both General Motors Europe and again Fiat because what will they really tell the public about a “possible” development?

Here’s hoping an insider contacts Saab History to provide some more details about anything that’s going on, so we know where Saab Automobile stands moving forward.

The President of Saab Automobile AB Jan-Ã…ke Jonsson, speaks with Auto Motor and Sport, on Saab’s Future.

Here it is thanks to David C for the Germany translation:

Saab President Jan-Ake Jonsson spoke with “Auto Motor and Sport” over the future model portfolio and the Trollhättan plant as well as positioning the brand.

AM&S: Mr. Jonsson, in the last year your world wide share lightly sunk from 133,000 to 125,000. What do you think for this year?

Jonsson: This year world wide we want to sell 110,000. The year after should be similar, maybe a little bit more because both important new models, the Saab 9-5 successor and the fully new Crossover Saab 9-4x will be here before the end of the year.

AM&S: The Saab 9-3 will be assembled at your core plant Trollhättan. Does that apply for the convertible?

saablatvia.jpgThe International Saab Club Meeting took place this past weekend in the Cesis district in Latvia on August 7th-9th 2008.

The Saab Club of Latvia did an incredible job in advertising the meeting during last year’s 60th Anniversary Saab Festival in Sweden from the 7th through the 10th of June, 2007. From a huge distribution of flyers at the Saab Festival Dinner, to a website launch, as well as proper signage displayed on a number of Saab Club of Latvia cars, namely the Saab 9-5 pictured here, their presence was certainly known and their anticipating of the meeting, quite remarkeable.

Here is a brief quote from their website:

Dear SAAB friends,

We invite all SAAB enthusiasts from around the world to take part in the 26th International SAAB Club Meeting, on 8,9, and 10 August 2008, in the Cesis district of Latvia.

This year is very important for us because the Latvian SAAB Club has its 10th Anniversary.

Our main idea is to meet SAAB friends in a large camping place where all SAAB enthusiasts can spend an interesting and rewarding time together.

And, as we see SAAB cars not only as a cult objects, but also as cars for active people, the meeting will be at the camping place Mezrozes, Cesu district. Mezrozes is situated 100 km north-east from the capital Riga and 15 km from the town Cesis.

Cesis is the town with more than a 800-year-old history, picturesque landscape and numerous cultural activities.

Preliminary Program:

Friday, August 8, 2008
Morning: Meeting and check-in at the Mezrozes camping.
Afternoon: Check–in and a sightseeing route.
Evening: Official opening of the “26th International SAAB Club Meeting 2008” and a Grill Party.

Saturday, August 9, 2008

Afternoon: You may still be on the tour, maybe not 🙂
Voting for the SAAB Beauty contest.
Evening: Buffet Diner with entertainment. Prizes and Special Prizes. Saturday night SAAB Disco. Sauna, smoke sauna, lake, pool.

Sunday, August 10, 2008
Late morning: Late breakfast.
SAAB market.
SAAB Beauty Contest award ceremony.
Afternoon: Closing of the Meeting.

One weekend for us is too short a time to meet SAAB friends again and show our hospitality. Yes, we want to show you more!

So the Latvian SAAB club invite you to join other SAAB friends during 3-day event before International Meeting 2008 when we want to show you just a little part of the nice place called Latvia and spend time together with other SAAB enthusiasts.

U.S. Saab Dealerships Participate in Conference Call Today

Posted on 29. Jul, 2008 by .

sd.jpg

U.S. Saab Dealerships nationwide are participating in a conference call today moderated by Steve Shannon, General Manager of Saab Automobile USA.

I have been told that there has been a lot of material confirmed at this meeting including the following in summarized format:

Sales:

The sales organization team will be changed where the today and in the past, there was one individual responsible for all sales activities of Saab, now that person will have their responsibilities split up amongst similiar tasks spanning all of GM’s “premium brands”.

This change looks to be a prelude to lure the remaining exclusive Saab dealerships to become three-brand dealerships.

Products:

The Saab 9-4x is being driven already by Steve Shannon and others at the Milford Proving Grounds and will be here in 14 months (October, 2009)

The new Saab 9-5 will be here just shortly thereafter the 9-4x launch.

The Saab 9-3x Cross-Combi is confirmed, but the launch date has not been made available.

Advertising:

More advertisements coming from McCann-Erickson in 4th quarter reinstating the turbocharging technology, and in the 1st quarter of next year, the advertisements will include cross-wheel drive.

Certified Pre-Owned:

The Certified Pre-Owned program will be continued as before as it is strong.

Warranty:

The warranty has been officially reduced from 100,000 to 50,000 powertrain warranty for all 2009 models. Steve Shannon indicates that this shouldn’t have much of an effect because it only covers powertrain, and bumper-to-bumper is still covered in the original terms.

Leasing:

Saab Dealerships are very concerned that lease programs being ended will put them in a bad state but Saab USA believes that this is a way to stay competitive as Volvo and other brands have just reduced or eliminated their leasing programs.

Questions & Answers:

There was quite a bit of questions here which ran for nearly 30 minutes.

Saab History On The 2008 Saab Owners Convention

The 2008 Saab Owners Convention is just 29 days away, and takes place at Devens Commons, now a partially-retired United States Army base approximately 1 hour West of Boston, Massachusetts on August 21st through the 24th.

I find this year’s event an appropriate location taking place on such a milestone year for the Saab Automobile brand, Saab USA, the Saab Owners Conventions as well as for me and my family:

The following are some notables reflecting these milestones:

* The first SAABs imported into the United States in 1956, took place at an old Navy port in Hingham, Massachusetts.

* Massachusetts, within New England, is the largest market for Saab Automobile USA to this day.

* This year marks the 30th anniversary since the debut of the 1978 Saab 99 Turbo for Saab Automobile, which is why you will see this Saab Owners Convention maintaining this theme throughout the weekend.

* I started the New England Saab Association in Massachusetts almost 10 years ago, and this year they are helping to plan the 2008 Saab Owners Convention.

* The highest performing Saab 9-3 Turbo-X had its North American debut in Boston, Massachusetts in November which also included a sequel this past May in Boston, Massachusetts again for a Turbo-X test drive.

* As for me, I grew up in Massachusetts, and quite interestingly enough, my family all owned our first Saabs here since the early 1970’s including the Ninety Nine EMS, a Ninety Six as well as a number of Nine Hundreds and Nine Thousands. This will be my first Saab Owners Convention in Massachusetts, so this is an important pilgrimage to make.

* This is the 10th year since meeting my fiancee in 1998 in none other than a 1987 Saab 900 S 3-door in cirrus white. This year I am pleased to say that we’ll both be attending this convention in none other than an upgraded throwback to our first date, a 1992 Saab 900 Turbo 3-door 5-speed, again in “cirrus white”.

* This year is not only the 18th year of ownership of General Motors of the Saab Automobile brand, but it’s also 18 years since the last time there was a Saab Owners Convention in Massachusetts (1990 – Sturbridge, MA).

As you can see, there is a lot to reflect on at a global, national and local level at this year’s 2008 Saab Owners Convention, so “find your own road” to Devens, Massachusetts this August!
