Saab Sighting Of The Week "Saab In Burlington, Vermont"

Posted on 20. Apr, 2010 by .

This past week, I was in nearby Vermont and unlike my visit a few years ago, this time I was impressed by the sheer numbers of Saab models that I noticed. The photo opportunity above for the Saab Sighting of the week, is of a Saab 9-5 Wagon taken near the pedestrian area known as Church Street in Burlington, Vermont. As I was preparing to take the photo, I must have seen at least 5 Saab models pass me as I was taken this photo within the course of 10 minutes, reaffirming that Vermont still has a lot of loyal Saab owners out there.

However, as we know, time passes on and each year we see less and less variety of Saab models on the road. Today, we now usually see just 9-3 and 9-5 models and that is also true for the Saab dealers and independent mechanics that service them. As I learned from visiting a local, longtime Saab independent shop in rural Vermont, it’s the lack of variety that is his biggest challenge as an independent that keeps him from getting as excited as he used to get. This lack of variety is also a challenge for the dealers as well, however these challenges will slowly begin to change as the new product roll out gets fully underway.

Here’s hoping that this variety comes back with this new era of Saab, so we can once again see a noticeable and varied Saab product lineup on the roads again.

I have to say that it is always refreshing to see those colors and varied products at all of the Saab Owners Conventions year after year.

International Saab Club Meeting 2008

Posted on 10. Aug, 2008 by .

saablatvia.jpgThe International Saab Club Meeting took place this past weekend in the Cesis district in Latvia on August 7th-9th 2008.

The Saab Club of Latvia did an incredible job in advertising the meeting during last year’s 60th Anniversary Saab Festival in Sweden from the 7th through the 10th of June, 2007. From a huge distribution of flyers at the Saab Festival Dinner, to a website launch, as well as proper signage displayed on a number of Saab Club of Latvia cars, namely the Saab 9-5 pictured here, their presence was certainly known and their anticipating of the meeting, quite remarkeable.

Here is a brief quote from their website:

Dear SAAB friends,

We invite all SAAB enthusiasts from around the world to take part in the 26th International SAAB Club Meeting, on 8,9, and 10 August 2008, in the Cesis district of Latvia.

This year is very important for us because the Latvian SAAB Club has its 10th Anniversary.

Our main idea is to meet SAAB friends in a large camping place where all SAAB enthusiasts can spend an interesting and rewarding time together.

And, as we see SAAB cars not only as a cult objects, but also as cars for active people, the meeting will be at the camping place Mezrozes, Cesu district. Mezrozes is situated 100 km north-east from the capital Riga and 15 km from the town Cesis.

Cesis is the town with more than a 800-year-old history, picturesque landscape and numerous cultural activities.

Preliminary Program:

Friday, August 8, 2008
Morning: Meeting and check-in at the Mezrozes camping.
Afternoon: Check–in and a sightseeing route.
Evening: Official opening of the “26th International SAAB Club Meeting 2008” and a Grill Party.

Saturday, August 9, 2008
Morning: International SAAB Rally 2008, a tour with special tasks but without complicated orienteering (for locals, of course 🙂 ).
Afternoon: You may still be on the tour, maybe not 🙂
Voting for the SAAB Beauty contest.
Evening: Buffet Diner with entertainment. Prizes and Special Prizes. Saturday night SAAB Disco. Sauna, smoke sauna, lake, pool.

Sunday, August 10, 2008
Late morning: Late breakfast.
SAAB market.
SAAB Beauty Contest award ceremony.
Afternoon: Closing of the Meeting.

One weekend for us is too short a time to meet SAAB friends again and show our hospitality. Yes, we want to show you more!

So the Latvian SAAB club invite you to join other SAAB friends during 3-day event before International Meeting 2008 when we want to show you just a little part of the nice place called Latvia and spend time together with other SAAB enthusiasts.

Saab History On The 2008 Saab Owners Convention

Posted on 23. Jul, 2008 by .

The 2008 Saab Owners Convention is just 29 days away, and takes place at Devens Commons, now a partially-retired United States Army base approximately 1 hour West of Boston, Massachusetts on August 21st through the 24th.

I find this year’s event an appropriate location taking place on such a milestone year for the Saab Automobile brand, Saab USA, the Saab Owners Conventions as well as for me and my family:

The following are some notables reflecting these milestones:

* The first SAABs imported into the United States in 1956, took place at an old Navy port in Hingham, Massachusetts.

* Massachusetts, within New England, is the largest market for Saab Automobile USA to this day.

* This year marks the 30th anniversary since the debut of the 1978 Saab 99 Turbo for Saab Automobile, which is why you will see this Saab Owners Convention maintaining this theme throughout the weekend.

* I started the New England Saab Association in Massachusetts almost 10 years ago, and this year they are helping to plan the 2008 Saab Owners Convention.

* The highest performing Saab 9-3 Turbo-X had its North American debut in Boston, Massachusetts in November which also included a sequel this past May in Boston, Massachusetts again for a Turbo-X test drive.

* As for me, I grew up in Massachusetts, and quite interestingly enough, my family all owned our first Saabs here since the early 1970’s including the Ninety Nine EMS, a Ninety Six as well as a number of Nine Hundreds and Nine Thousands. This will be my first Saab Owners Convention in Massachusetts, so this is an important pilgrimage to make.

* This is the 10th year since meeting my fiancee in 1998 in none other than a 1987 Saab 900 S 3-door in cirrus white. This year I am pleased to say that we’ll both be attending this convention in none other than an upgraded throwback to our first date, a 1992 Saab 900 Turbo 3-door 5-speed, again in “cirrus white”.

* This year is not only the 18th year of ownership of General Motors of the Saab Automobile brand, but it’s also 18 years since the last time there was a Saab Owners Convention in Massachusetts (1990 – Sturbridge, MA).

As you can see, there is a lot to reflect on at a global, national and local level at this year’s 2008 Saab Owners Convention, so “find your own road” to Devens, Massachusetts this August!

Saab Automobile USA’s Advertising : 2008 Tour De France

Posted on 14. Jul, 2008 by .

Saab Automobile USA & Versus have partnered to provide coverage of the 2008 Tour de France. As indicated on the versus website, you can clearly see the Saab USA “Born From Jets” themed banner ads, as well as as the video coverage integrated into the first stage.

If you are like me, you may have also been watching the 2008 Tour de France over the past 10 stages, and to my amazement, I have yet to see any more Saab USA television advertisements or web ads since the first stage except for the brief verbal mentions within the “Saab Performance Predictions” segments.

So here’s the question, besides the static banner ads on the website and predictions segments of the coverage, will there be any more showcasing of Saab USA’s ads in the daily stage recaps of the 2008 Tour de France on the versus website in addition to any of the Saab/Mavic branded 9-3 SportCombis in bright yellow? I was expecting a lot more here for sure, here’s hoping that the new ads begin to show up before the event is over.

I would like to ask you the visitor, have you seen any Saab USA ads in concert with the Saab / Mavic partnership whether it is television, radio, print, web or in person? It’ll be interesting to see if there has been any real reach with the advertising money that is being spent here by Saab Automobile USA.

Where have you seen Saab USA ads with the 2008 Tour de France / Mavic partnership?

Cherry Hill Saab Hosted Pro Cycling Team In 1995

Posted on 14. Jul, 2008 by .

After recently reviewing some material that Saab History has received, I have found it interesting that as part of Saab Cars, USA sponsoring the Saab Pro Cycling team in 1995, Saab History’s site sponsor, Cherry Hill Saab of Cherry Hill, New Jersey hosted this team at their dealership as part of the activities.

Those fortunate to have been invited to this event had the opportunity to meet the team, but to also get a “free” 47-point inspection on their Saab!

I wonder if Saab dealerships in the United States will be hosting events like this in the United States now that the Saab USA-Mavic team are now on tour stopping at various venues including ski resorts.

The 1995 Saab USA Professional Cycling Team Photo

Posted on 14. Jul, 2008 by .

As a follow-up to the previous piece about Saab USA’s sponsorship of the pro cycling team in 1995, here is another group photograph I have recently come across for the record.

I find it interesting that the vehicle branding was extremely consistent with not only the team cycling theme, but the “Find Your Own Road” advertising campaign at the time.
