The Sunday River Ski Resort – Cold Brook Saab Partnership

Cold Brook Saab of Skowhegan, Maine, an exclusive Saab dealership for over 46 years, continues to enjoy a strong customer following and has managed many continuous cross marketing opportunities over the years. The first one I covered this past November with Shipyard Brewery, the other one I am covering here with Sunday River, a leading ski resort in New England, located in Newry, Maine.

I first began learning about Sunday River’s use of Saab vehicles upon my first visit to the resort as a guest, back in January of 2007. It was during that visit where I noticed a beautiful black Saab 9-5 wagon complete with the Sunday River logo on it.

It was not until my recent connection with Cold Brook Saab where I learned from the owner of the dealer, Joey Joseph, that this partnership began 12 years ago with the resort. “We started establishing our cross marketing campaign with a sponsorship at Sugarloaf Ski Resort in 1995 and have since forged alliances with Sunday River Ski and Golf Resort and Shipyard Brewery in Portland.”

It’s interesting to note when the first partnership was established at Sunday River’s sister ski resort Sugarloaf, Saab Cars USA had a national involvement with it as well. At that time, it was more than just opportunities for showcasing Saab products as it included discounted lift tickets, priority parking, a ski race, luncheon, raffle, an opportunity to drive a new Saab for the week in addition to lodging discounts all for Saab owners!

The current fleet that Sunday River uses includes Saab 9-5 Sedans and 9-5 SportCombis as well as 9-7xs. These vehicles initially began as transportation vehicles for upper management serving as premium transportation for executives, much like what has been done at Shipyard Brewery who have many top executives driving Saabs from Cold Brook Saab also. Today, Saabs are not only owned by employees, but also serve functions such as public safety much like Aspen & Vail as well as VIP and guest transportation at this leading family oriented resort. With all of the Saabs driving around by Sunday River, it should be no surprise to learn that many of the guests of the resort also follow the same interest in Saabs as hinted to in the film.

After having this great experience at Sunday River to learn about this Saab partnership, it is clear that Cold Brook Saab and Sunday River both want this partnership to continue. With a newly created Saab organization in the United States, known as Saab Cars North America, along with some long awaited incredible product offerings that will clearly serve the best interests of this partnership and their customer’s demographic such as the Saab 9-3x, all new Saab 9-5 and 9-4x all equipped with Cross Wheel Drive, the future looks promising.

A special thanks to those at both at Sunday River ski resort as well as Cold Brook Saab for the opportunity to bring awareness of this ongoing Saab partnership.

I frequently see Saabs throughout the Portland, Maine region, but this past weekend was quite a rare occurrence.

soc2008.jpgThis week’s Saab sighting of the week, is none other than a 1996 Saab 9000 Aero. This Saab sighting was not just another person’s transportation, it was clearly owned by an enthusiast. It was a nice sign to randomly see a Saab with Connecticut plates touting both a 2008 Saab Owners Convention sticker in the rear window as well as an Aero emblem on the hood.

By sharing this information here on Saab History, we can hope that the rightful owner of this car can give us some more insight into their interest and passion for the Saab Automobile brand.

The Shipyard Brewing – Cold Brook Saab Partnership

Saab History has been listening and learning about the significant impact that was made to Saab dealerships here in the United States over the past week. That impact involves 37% of 218 Saab dealerships in the United States or 81 individual retailers that are expected to terminate their agreements by the time the sale is completed, targeted for November 30th, 2009.

Here in the state of Maine, all but a few of these dealerships have received termination letters and as a result, there has been a huge impact to the local economy with customers and local businesses alike.

An example of this is Cold Brook Saab located in Skowhegan, Maine. Cold Brook Saab has been an exclusive Saab dealer for over 46 years and enjoys a strong customer following and has thrived despite tough times in the auto industry. Cold Brook Saab owner Joey Joseph credits innovative marketing through cross marketing opportunities that have evolved over the last 15 years. “We started establishing our cross marketing campaign with a sponsorship at Sugarloaf Ski Resort and have since forged alliances with Sunday River Ski and Golf Resort and Shipyard Brewery in Portland.”

An example of how this action by GM/SAAB to close the Maine Saab dealer network down can be seen by the dissolution of the long term partnerships. I had the pleasure of meeting the folks over at Shipyard Brewery and discussed what the demise of Cold Brooks Saab franchise might mean to their corporate fleet car of choice.

The current fleet that the company uses includes Saab 9-3 SportCombi’s, 9-5 SportCombi’s as well as 9-7xs. These vehicles initially began as transportation vehicles for upper management serving as premium transportation for executives that promote a premium product as a corporate benefit, much like what has been done at nearby Sunday River ski and golf resort who has many top executives driving Saabs from Cold Brook Saab also.

Today, the Saab vehicles have been handed down within the company to all levels and now support marketing and other critical functions to the company. For over a decade Cold Brook Saab has provided over 20 Saab vehicles to Shipyard Brewery and as a result, they have enjoyed every minute
of it.

If this particular dealership ends up being terminated at the end of the month or when the sale of Saab is completed, the direct result will inevitably be that Shipyard Brewery will no longer be using Saabs as their fleet vehicles in the future.

The message here is that the dealerships and and their customers are inextricably linked through relationships. If a Saab dealer cannot offer Saabs any longer, their customers have no real incentive to go out of their way to find another Saab dealer to continue their ownership because that relationship began with the dealer, not the Saab product.

A special thanks to those at both Shipyard Brewery as well as Cold Brook Saab for the opportunity to realize the local impact in Maine to the immediate situation with Saab dealerships in the United States.

Students At Umeå Create Koenigsegg-Saab Concepts

SVT reports that there are students at the world famous transportation design school in Umeå, are creating design charettes on what the future of Koenigsegg-Saab products will look like for course credit.

Let’s keep in mind, it was Daniel Forsgren of the same school back in 2003 that interned with Saab Automobile and created the Saab 9-CX concept car as seen in the video here.

These students, some speaking in English for the camera, have some very interesting ideas as we can see here. Enjoy the video.

Here’s a brief translation of the coverage from SVT below.

How will the future of Saab-Koenigsegg look like? Yes, the answer to it is perhaps on of Design in Umeå for just minutes after the news of the acquisition of Saab Koenigseggs started the students on transportation design line at Design School in Umeå to sketch out the future car.

-Just when we heard the news, we received a mandate to draw a car, “says Juan Pablo Barnal Parbon in English with his Spanish accent.

“We said at once that this might be a chance for us new designers to show us and maybe get a job at car maker, says Pablo with ill-concealed delight.

The challenge is to find the lines that combine the two makes. The strong front of the Koenigsegg with the clean lines Saab describes a student’s sketch.

-I have looked a little more on the Saab 80’s models with the old 900: an and the like from that period. Not so much retro but more trying to keep the old lines, “says Niklas Palm on its yellow sketch of the car.

It was recently brought to my attention that while it’s clear there is a lot of news going on these days, it’s important to indicate that all new and existing Saab Automobile customers will have their service, parts and warranties honored as GM is legally responsible to uphold these agreements made with individual dealerships around the world.

The one thing we cannot have now, are customers turning away from possible sales, service, parts, etc. so please keep in mind that it’s business as usual as a customer with a company that is required to honor all agreements, it is GM’s legal responsibility.

This material was recently updated on the Saab Automobile USA owners section of the website.

A Saab Enthusiast has recently written about his excitement with his 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero and has given Saab History permission to share some of it!

Here’s his opening line wow!

“If you can’t take to the sky …
Take to the road, preferably in a machine that will allow you to move as quickly (and safely) as possible. I’m a huge believer in the power of transportation. It transforms our world and lets people reach beyond normal definitions of space and distance. “

Sweden Provides Financial Support, Not Ownership Of Saab

Posted on 08. Dec, 2008 by .

According to the local, and SVT24, Sweden will be providing several (2.8 Billion USD) worth of loan guarantees to Volvo & Saab Automobile.

While many individuals included myself, hoped that Sweden would nationalize Saab, Maud Oloffson, Sweden’s transportation minister has indicated that the financial support would take place and nationalizing would not.

We’ll see what Saab Automobile’s responses will be to this about their sustainability as a business, future product roll outs, etc. as I have sent some e-mails out to them.
