In the next month or so, Saab Cars North America is expected to launch an all out marketing blitz as part of the launch of the all new Saab 9-5 in the United States according to Business Week.

There’s a huge wave of media and communication” that will start in Sweden when the 9-5 goes on sale June 19, Adrian Hallmark, executive director of sales, said in a phone interview. Saab will spend more than $150 million on marketing in the second half of 2010 after spending “nothing” on promotions since the sale by GM, he said.

Saab Cars North America Starts Leasing On MY 2010 9-3

Saab Cars North America has started its first leasing event as a new company this week, focusing on the 2010 9-3 models, according to multiple news sources including Automotive news.

I’d be interested in what my favorite Saab, the 9-3x with a manual transmission, will lease for too.

Here’s a snippet of the article by Automotive News on leasing.

DETROIT — Saab Cars North America kicked off its first sales event as a new company today — a leasing program for the 2010 Saab 9-3.

Saab can move on the marketing front now that it has begun slowly building up its U.S. pipeline. The 9-3 has been trickling into the United States since late March. Before that, dealers had not had a shipment of Saab vehicles since last June.

“We had to start from scratch,” said Michael Colleran, COO of Saab Cars North America. “We’ve got a great team in place; we’ve got leasing; we’ve got the pipeline in place, and inventory is rising.”

Saab is offering a 2010 9-3 Sport Sedan 2.0 with automatic transmission for $399 a month with a $3,374 down payment; the term is 48 months. Advertising to promote the lease program will be primarily newspapers, direct mail, digital and social media. Some co-op advertising is planned. The program expires June 1.

Saab Making Steady Return To Health: Jan Åke Jonsson

Posted on 13. May, 2010 by .

Saab CEO Jan Åke Jonsson, was recently interviewed by The Local where he stated that there are signs of recovery for the Saab brand.

Here is a snippet of the article below:

Saab CEO Jan Åke Jonsson has said the iconic Swedish brand is showing good signs of recovery after teetering close to the abyss before its sale to Dutch luxury car maker Spyker.

The newly reorganized Saab is steadily reducing its break even point and has more than enough cash to survive as it begins to rebuild sales, its chief executive officer said on Tuesday.

After a near-liquidation by former parent General Motors, Saab must rebuild its sales from scratch and is focused on restructuring its operations, said Jonsson.

“We had been closed down for seven weeks,” he told reporters in Detroit.

“We couldn’t order any material or do any advertising because we were in liquidation,” he said. “Now we have about 4,500 cars in inventory. We’re completely focused on getting our products out as quickly as possible.”

The company is currently living on reserves, including loans from the European banks and a $200 million technology deal with Beijing Auto.

But Jonsson said the storied Swedish brand should be able to break even in the second half of 2011.

While Jonsson hopes to reduce operating costs to the point where Saab can break even with annual sales of 80,000 to 85,000 vehicles, he said its potential sales are significantly higher.

Jonsson is confident Saab could sell as many as 125,000 units annually “at which point we would be quite profitable.”

“These are very conservative estimates,” he said, noting that Saab had sold 98,000 cars in 2008 when it was still owned by GM.

In the United States, which is Saab’s single largest market, Saab has reached several key objectives since its February 23 purchase by Dutch sports car maker Spyker, noted Michael Colleran, president and chief operating officer of Saab Cars North America.

SAAB USA has built a staff, re-filled the pipeline to its 207 dealers and signed an agreement with what was then GMAC but is now Ally Bank, which is providing financing to Saab dealers and customers.

Saab is now in a position where it can offer lease deals to potential customers, Colleran said. In addition, Saab North America is launching its first sales promotion and is preparing a broad advertising campaign that will utilize print, online and social media.

The automaker’s US dealers have increased their orders for new vehicles, which is a sign of confidence in the new company and its plans for the future, Colleran said.

Saab also plans to resume selling cars in Canada in August, Colleran said.

Boston University Student Writes About Saab's History

Posted on 06. May, 2010 by .

Saab History was contacted by Boston University student, Ben Timmins, earlier this year about an article on Saab’s history in the United States. Timmin’s, a Communications major, wanted to learn about Saab’s history, when they started in the United States and why the North East region was and still is very much a strong part of the customer base for the Saab brand. It was an honor to provide him with details about Saab’s stateside history, in which he did a good job in articulating in his article below, republished with permission.

Ben Timmin’s initiative in contacting Saab History, so that he could get the facts about Saab’s past, present and future, is something that the journalism industry today, needs to spend more time doing. As Saab continues this new rebirth period for the brand, it needs more journalists and reporters like Ben spending the time researching, so that they can become more of a credible resource for current, prospective and past Saab customers, that the company hopes to welcome back.

I am delighted to hear that from this article and a few others, Ben Timmins managed to recently secure an internship at a local publication in the greater Boston area.

Let’s wish him well in his new pursuits and thank him for his due diligence and great reporting, your time at Boston University has clearly served you well!

Saab is back, and they want to build you a car.

March 15, 2010

Throughout the years, Saab owners have had to learn how to pronounce a few odd words like Viggen and SportCombi, but with a little help from a Dutch company, they’re all saying one word this month: sold.

While Saab’s death at the hands of a bankrupt General Motors seemed certain by the winter of 2009, a last minute purchase by Dutch supercar maker Spyker in February saved the Swedish marque and promised to keep the assembly lines—and product development-rolling.

Saab’s near-death experience became another defining event in its 60-year history, but for New Englanders, it also served as a reminder: New England buys more Saabs than any other region in the country, and loves them for reasons as unique as the cars themselves. Saab draws its history in America back to 1956 as the Swedish company sent its first cars to the Port of Hingham, Mass. Saab headquartered its American operations in Connecticut (first in New Haven and then Orange) in the 1970s and 1980s.

Saab’s proximity to the population centers of New England was a big driver of sales, SaabHistory.com editor Ryan Emge said. “Saab’s president at the time was very focused on a strong dealership body, specifically in New England, and he decided to create that body here,” he said. “Ever since then we’ve had the largest number of Saab dealerships per capita compared to the rest of the country.”
